I've been thinking about feminism a lot lately.

There has been an awful lot of talk going around about how feminism is ruining women. Feminism means "fat acceptance". Feminism means all the rewards with no effort. Feminism means having sex with whoever you want. Feminism means getting pissed when a guy thinks you'd be more attractive if you shaved your armpits.

I have news for you, TRP: This is not what feminism is about.

I officially feel a sickening sense of embrassment when I say that I'm a feminist because I know that you are going to assume I believe in all that bullshit.

To be honest, I know why you hate feminism. Hell, I hate it too (or at least that version of ). But I am begging you, please stop thinking that this is the same as this.

I'm a feminist. Yes, I know the wage gap isn't real (or at least it's not as bad as 70 cents to every dollar). No, I don't feel obligated to be attracted to fat people.

Realize that there are a metric shitton of definitions of feminism. Just because someone is Black doesn't mean they like rap music. Just because someone is a self-described feminist doesn't mean they believe in the most out-there, radicalist feminist ideas you've heard. Most feminists are very moderate and probably hold the same beliefs you do.

What really makes me sad is the fact that some have taken it so far as to say, "Well, maybe all of feminism was just one big mistake. Maybe women shouldn't have the right to vote."

I cannot put in to words exactly how depressing that is to me.

When you hear a woman tell you she's a feminist, stop automatically assuming she's some estrogen-crazed radicalist who gets all her information from tumblr.

EDIT: I appreciate all the responses, guys! Really got me thinking. I've decided to call myself an "equalist" or "humanist" from now on. Cheers.
