I normally would give up my site to pregnant or elderly people, but one time I was on the bus and my sciatica was absolutely killing me - I'd managed to find a comfortable way to sit where the pain didn't make me scream out loud.

At one of the stops, I got asked by a young healthy woman with no children in tow to give up my seat and I told her no, I can't, my back is killing me. There were tuts all round. Men are expected to endure the pain I guess.

Only the old lady next to me had my back cos she'd heard me groaning when the bus hit potholes and when she'd asked about it earlier I'd said 'sciatica' through gritted teeth. If it wasn't for her I seriously think a few of the others would have pulled me out of my seat.

Offer it to pregnant or disabled women. When asked by a woman who clearly has no visible signs of a disability , I think it's within our right to ask why we should give our seat up. We have as much of a right to know why we are being asked, as much as we do a right to ask her to disclose her illness in a public train.

Edit: Yes and of course offer it to disabled men too. It was implied because of the sub we are on.

Who offers their seat on public transportation these days to a woman purely because she's woman? Maybe that's still a thing in a way more patriarchal society than the one I live in (the US)? Because I can't remember ever doing that or ever seeing anyone else do that.

Oh and for the record, I'm male and I have had a woman get up and offer me her seat in the past. I was injured and clearly having a hard time and she was a decent human being.

Literally women can stand up easier than men, they weigh less per pound of leg muscle that they contain. Men are strong but men weigh alot more and only have 30% more leg muscle.

This isn't even gender equality, women should be volunteering their seats to men. The girl accountant needs to give her seat to the girl nurse, and the girl nurse needs to give it up for the male gardener.

I love this guy. A few years back i had been working all day and my mom asked me to pick up a pizza for us on the way home. So here I am in this bus that i got on at the 2nd or third stop on the route with an XL pizza in my hands and it's getting packed. Woman who is probably 40 or 50 gets on acting like she can't walk or stand - like bitch at least hold the pole - and people started talking shit that young people like me don't get up. Why the fuck would I get up with a pizza box and take up even more space, and she isn't even a senior.

I didn't get up.

Edit to add: Many of these kind of women either dont pay or dont pay the full fare when they get on in NYC. Then there's the ones that mob the back door and don't pay shit but dive into the seats.

I will usually ask anyone older than me if they want to sit or if they have young children, I’m in my mid 20’s so it doesn’t bother me to stand. But I wouldn’t let someone have my seat because they think they are entitled to have it because of their gender or race or whatever. I treat people equal for the most part.

I've heard that because mens center of gravity is higher then womens their backs tend to be under more strain which consequently makes them more tired, that's why men tend to slouch/sink down while they sit.

..So, if anything women (who's center of gravity is around the hip area) should be giving up their seats to men.

I see no reason not to give somebody my seat if he asks politely (male or female). If somebody is tired enough to ask or has a reason he/she wouldn't want to disclose it's fine. Of course offering it to people you see need it is common courtesy.

In my country it's frowned upon to exercise traditional etiquette. It's seen as outdated. If you did that to a Norwegian woman (and you're a Norwegian man), she would most likely interpret it as you see her as weaker than you. Anything you wouldn't also do for a fellow man is seen as discrimination. If you hold the door for a woman, it's socially expected that you also hold the door for another man, and same goes for women, vica versa.

We tend to be more tolerant towards foreigners because we understand there's cultural differences obviously.

I've been dating a British guy for the past 3 years and I have to say what annoys me the most is the etiquette things he does. Like on our first date, I insisted on splitting the bill while he insisted on paying for both of us. It ended up in an unnecessary argument (which he won because I ended up backing down because he started to get worked up). Although he did it because he thought it was right, it contradicted my values strongly. I wanted our very first date to be based on equal terms, so it upset me more than it should have.

I wish etiquette could just disappeared from every culture. I understand it's meant to be a form of politeness, but it pretty much only favours women and that's irrational and unfair. Don't be polite based on people's gender, be polite based on the fact that they're your fellow humans. Men shouldn't always be the ones who have to give, they deserve to receive too.

I never thought there was any obligation to give up your seat for a woman just because she's female. Is that a thing? I thought it was if you think it will be more difficult for the person to stand than you.

If I'm sat down because I'm tired, it never even occured to me for one second to stand up for a young fit woman.

Literally never have I seen a woman expect a seat from a man. The article was about chivalry, because some men, having old-fashioned values, will offer their seat to a woman- which I as a young, not-pregnant, able-bodied and reasonable woman would politely refuse. I’ve given up my seat at least 1,000 times & even though I used to work 80 hour weeks & sometimes 30 hour days I don’t recall anyone ever offering me a seat.

I'm pretty happy this expectation seems to be slowly going away. Most times I've taken a bus, people want so little to do with each other they won't even ask for the seat lol. In general, I hate people interacting with me when I'm going about my day more than a passing "Morning". I get freaked out that their normalcy is only skin deep and the second I reject them, they'll snap. Nope, nope, nope. I actively look as unfriendly as possible just so people will leave me alone.

I agree lol. Although this doesn't really happen in the U.S., it happens in a lot of other cultures. I give up my seat for men quite a lot but they also refuse to take it. When I go with my boyfriend in a crowded bus I always make sure he gets the window seat so women can't glare at him and guilt him into standing up. It's ridiculous. Only pregnant, disabled and elderly should have the seats given up for them.

Oh and side note: Your five year old child doesn't need their own seat either imo. The bus is extremely crowded, and that kid didn't pay a fare. Put him on your lap.
