*edit- I realized title is a bit misleading. This post is specifically about us splitting dinner bills 50/50, but he has expressed that he wants our relationship to be “50/50” specifically in reference to finances. I have a high paying job but he makes MUCH more than me.

So I am new to RPW theory but really enjoy everything I’m learning and I am trying to implement the lifestyle in my relationship on my part. My bf is very much captain material according to what I’ve read on this sub. We are very serious despite only being in a relationship for 3 months, are extremely committed and devoted, and we have discussed marriage.

He does have an ex-wife and he’s shared that in that relationship he felt that it was very one-sided and felt like an ATM. He hasn’t said this explicitly, but I’ve made the connection that he’s doing what he can to make sure our relationship is not like that.

For example, he says all the time that our relationship is “50/50” and “equal”. I know he doesn’t truly believe this because we have discussed that he is the main decision-maker/dominant and I am the submissive partner. This does play out practically as well.

The only time he practically tries to enforce his “50/50” comments is when we go out to eat. He said he wants me to get the bill sometimes/half the time. I can afford it for the most part as I have a good paying job and savings.

But, it bothers me and I feel kind of embarrassed to get the bill. It makes me feel like he doesn’t want to take care of me (even though he cares for me in every other meaningful way). I think part of the reason i feel this way is because he makes way more money than I do, and because all of the men in my family (grandpas, dad, brothers) always get the bill and don’t let their women pay for meals.

Also just for some context, we go out to meals several times a week (4ish times) and usually go to nicer restaurants. Usually the bill is around $70+ between the two of us per meal. Before I started dating him, I would rarely go out to eat and would not spend much money on restaurants, so now that we go out often (usually at his suggestion, but I happily agree) I am spending much more money on restaurants.

Last night at dinner we had another discussion about the bill and I said it really makes me uncomfortable to pay. He said it’s not a big deal and fine he will get the bill moving forward but I feel like I forced him (in a blue pill manner (whiny, frustrated, childish)) to come to this conclusion and that he would really rather me pay. He’s generous with his money otherwise and not cheap at all, and has told me that he will take care of me financially if/when I need him to.

I guess I’m feeling like I did something wrong by insisting he pay for dinners instead of submitting to him by agreeing to pay for 50% of dinners, but at the same time he is the provider so shouldn’t he be paying for dinners?

I am thinking of apologizing to him and telling him I will pay for 50% moving forward. I feel like it was silly of me to insist when this is the only thing he’s ever asked me to pay for. Also though, he doesn’t give me expensive gifts or pay for any of my clothes, bills, etc. (which makes sense).

Would appreciate some of your ladies’ advice and perspective!

TLDR: bf makes way more money than I do but wants me to pay for 50% of meals when we go out. Was I wrong to not submit to his request?

*update: this is no longer an issue for me or my partner and it has been resolved. Not deleting because that goes against the rules but no more advice is needed. Thank you for everyone that helped me work through this!!
