The initial naysayers don't surprise me but not living in a messy shithole does a lot for mental clarity.

I get more done and focus easier on work when my home office space is freshly cleaned
[–]wtfawdNoWeddingShoes9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'd wager that's universal, but there are messy people that are so used to their "way of things" that they can't imagine cleaning and tidying all the time, when really, it's a simple task that takes very little time (unless you let it build and build) that clears your head for more important things.
[–]Dollar_thief5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Tidy room, tidy mind. There's a reason Buddhist monks don't have any possessions.

I was a slob until I dated a bitch of a girl for almost 2 years. Even though the relationship was frequently shitty, I have no regret spending almost 2 years with her because, thanks to her, I emerged a tidy man. The feeling of going from a messy home to a clean and organized home is so liberating and really does make it easier to focus on the more important tasks in life.
[–]LaRedPill0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
As with everything, there is a line you don't need to cross, tidying up and cleaning is good, overly doing it all the time is not, you don't need to make the bed from scratch every fucking day, unless its in shambles from last night fucking session. But not changing the sheets after at least 15 days (providing its not summer and you don't go to bet covered in dirt) is bad, too.

Clearly (and unfortunately, which forces one to wonder how they can utilize all the higher level knowledge shared here) there is a portion of the population here that doesn't recognize cleanliness/orderliness of one's own living space as relevant to the Hierarchy of Needs.

[–]VisionThink 29 points29 points29 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
This is probably my biggest weakness. My job demands that I be very orderly and when I get home I just don't want to feel like I'm at work anymore. I'm way better at producing (cooking, planning) than cleaning up after myself. I even think I got dumped when I was 20 because my girlfriend said my 50 square foot dorm room was filthy.
[–]pollodustino1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I found that just focusing on one room a day is the best strategy for me. I'll start working on it, and if I get a little bored I'll go off and do something else for a little while, then come back and work some more. It may take an eight hour shift to clean the kitchen, but I'm not doing it so hard that I make myself miserable and start hating the action of cleaning, and the kitchen actually gets cleaner because now I'm able to focus on details for longer.
It may take longer overall, but the quality of the cleaning will most likely be way better than if the cleaning was done super quickly.
Kind of plays into the philosophical ideas of doing work for its own sake as well, and can be quite meditative.
[–]j33tAy0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You do what you're told by your boss and you do not do what is best for yourself at home. Take ownership of your surroundings. No one is going to maintain your space except you.

It is not a weakness it is a strength. Cleaning is women's work. You are one of the only alphas on here, do not admit failure to a beta post by a mangina and a bunch of circle jerking incel fags, maintain your masculinity and make bitches clean up after you, it is their role, make them play their role and you play yours. Otherwise downboat me like the rest of the magina neckbeards on here, I do not mind. Just do not accept the advice of point seeking meta-posters like OP. There's no easier way to kill productivity than to leave a bunch of little shit like this undone. Especially the basic ones, like taking out the trash and doing laundry.
In the back of your head, you know you have to do it at some point. But you're being a lazy shit and procrastinating. No biggie, you think. You'll take care of it later. Except when later comes, you've got more important things to do, and the little chores get ignored. They start to build up. Eventually, the little chores look like monumental tasks.
If you've got these huge cleaning jobs to take care of, that you continue to leave undone, how can you hope to achieve those higher-order goals, like writing, making music, or building your career? You can't even keep your room clean, you lazy fuck.

If someone is going to the gym six days a week, but not washing his sheets or dishes, something doesn't add up. You can't care and do the work, and not care and shirk the work, at the same time.

Religiousity aside, the Bible has sage words on this topic. "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much."
The Navy Admiral who gave the exceptional commencement speech at UT Austin expressed the same thing with his first point: Make your bed. If you can't accomplish this basic task in the first two minutes of being awake, how can you expect to be successful in anything else? Even if your day is a disaster....you still come home to a made bed to start the next day in.
Make your bed. Be faithful in the little things.

[–]3NO_LAH_WHERE_GOT5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Hypothesis: we're always processing our environments in the back of our minds. The neater and tidier a place is, the less energy is required to process it, which frees up more mental energy to focus on the task at hand. Same for when you close tabs, turn off notifications, etc.
Kids are probably messier than adults because they have lower-resolution maps of the world around them– ie they literally don't quite see the mess.

Major thumbs up to you. When you look like you have your shit together: then you will have your shit together. Or to reverse it. If your place is a mess: you are a mess. A tip that has worked for me. At the beginning of the season/year, hang your cloths in your closet by reversing the hanging hook. As you use your cloths hang them up normally. At the end of the season/year, see which cloths are still reverse hung. Consider goodwill. Same applies for drawers.
[–]ThrowingJungleLions0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Cannot stress this more. How can you call yourself a functioning human being if you can't even keep your place clean? In fact how can you call yourself a functioning mammal... nest organisation and cleanliness is a skill almost all nesting animals have... You're the apex predator, should be good at it by now.
It's one of the first steps in your hierarchy of needs. You can't expect to achieve higher functions like creativity or discipline without first having fed yourself well, had adequate sleep and organised your surroundings.

Mad Men is a fantastic source for RP material illustrated in art.
Don is in a meeting with the lovely, savvy, and untouchable Rachel Menken when he loses a cuff link. She later gives him new ones when he visits her department store and comments "You're usually so put together."
That line stuck with me and helped me tie up my own loose ends.
Be put together. Keep your appearance up. Plan for contingencies. Have extras of anything vital. Double check anything critical. Have plans B and C. Don't be clumsy. Learn to be composed when you are. Don't be late. Leave a factor of safety in anything important.
Be put together.

[–]1clon3man2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think being clean is important once you've committed to improving other shit in your life. It's not the first thing I'd tackle personally.
I'm not a pig who lets dishes or clothes pile up but I do have clutter here and there. It's really not going to improve my life at all to raise the bar, and the work is going to be un-done by my roomates.
While I get some therapeutic benefits from cleaning, there's no way I generate enough momentum from it to give a shit about the stuff that really matters.
I keep my body clean and I don't leave things around that smell. Good enough.
[–]Cogito_ErgoSum2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Its funny, because I clean when I procrastinate.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Very true. I like that you point out that maids and landscapers etc are an option as well. One of the key things here that some people don't seem to understand, or at least they forget it whenever it is convenient, is that women (and men, basically everybody) don't care HOW things get done.
Women don't want to hear about how much effort you put into working out to have that body, or how hard it was to do anything. They just want to see the results. If it was effortless for you that's even better. Just like they don't really care how you keep a tidy and organized house/life. If it makes more sense to you from a cost/reward aspect to hire people to do this stuff for you then do it.
[–]GnarlyBellyButton871 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Your living space, possessions and environment are a direct reflection of who you are. As you take pride in your appearance, so also take pride in the state of your feeling and affairs. Just as your girlfriend or ltr is a reflection of your screening process.
Cleaning is not "women's shit". To the extent that it bothers you, you will clean your living space. I've seen a dumb fuck demand his wife clean his house when he himself wouldn't lift a finger. If your wife isn't retarded, respects you to the least degree and professes to love you, she will clean and tidy the house. But only if she can see tidiness and cleanliness is something you value. And that means YOU tidying the house anytime you think the house is a mess, or that she's unable or unwilling to.
[–]Thewelshpill0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
man this is such a good point
[–]sexowlinyourwindow -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Women will clean for all sorts of reasons. Some actually care about cleanliness and will clean because they like you, even if you don't give a fuck. You can tell by how clean their own crap is. Some are just manipulating, some do it as a trade-off for other things. All will do it as an excuse to snoop through your shit. "I was just cleaning and I found whatever..."
But in general, domestic cleaning IS women's shit. You need to know and be willing to do it yourself so it isn't used against you, though.
[–]Razgriz162 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I disagree. Part of being mature and independent is the ability to be self sustaining. In the modern world that requires us to take care of our own spaces and be on top of our own shit. Falling for gender norms and stereotypes in this case is detrimental (I'm speaking for free men, married is obviously different).
[–]sexowlinyourwindow 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I said 'You need to know and be willing to do it yourself so it isn't used against you,' but that doesn't cover if you are on your own. The responsibility is always your own, if you don't do it, no one will. But if there is a woman at least somewhat willing and able, there is no reason to go for the fake equality. Women tend to be good at the many regular boring tasks without getting worn out, just like they are better at taking care of little kids.
Falling for gender norms and stereotypes in this case is detrimental
What possible detriments are there in ANY case? For having a woman clean for you? Besides aforementioned going through your shit, all I can think of is women who can't do it to my standard.
I'm not even sure if gender norms is a term now that there are 31 flavors of it.
[–]1falling_tiger1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Absolutely. It's a mistake however for men to dismiss cleaning as being women's shit and thus beneath them.
It's among the mundane tasks which both men and women must be able to do well, but not something a man should need do often in a relationship.
It has nothing to do with doing it well, it's just either getting done or not. There are differences in quality but they don't matter overall. Something you do well is where quality matters, like wiring a house, overhauling an engine, or coding a... whatever people code.
[–]Trumpanoly0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Don't be the hero who goes full out and cleans the house from top to bottom in 3+ hours.
It is all about consistency. Clean 1 area or 1 thing daily. For example the toilet one day, inside of the microwave the next. Every. Fucking. Day.
I like to clean during cooking.
And pro cooking tip: Clean as you go. Have all the dishes done before you eat the food, and make sure your kitchen is ready to go for next time.
Unless you live in a mansion and require paid help there is no excuses for a messy place.
[–]HappyScribe0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Agreed, consistency is key. I managed to get into the habit of cleaning for one song on my ipod everytime I came home. Within a couple of weeks my apartment was spotless.
It's also about creating habits. Every morning, before using the toilet, I'll give it a quick scrub. I never go to sleep with dishes done. Given time it becomes automatic.

[–]pollodustino12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'd wager a lot of people reading the stuff here didn't grow up with a father figure or proper training in household and personal responsibilities, so it's highly conceivable that they need to be told like they're five years old again.
And sometimes you may know it, were trained on how to do it, and/or had a strong father type when you were growing up but have let yourself falter, and just need a swift kick in the ass.

You wouldn't think it but there are 2 generations of human beings that were largely not made to be disciplined about tidyness and basic human cleanliness. Their lack of discipline shows in their attitudes towards the pursuit of excellence. Hence them being here, looking for guides on how to excel.
Working in the different jobs I've had over the years, I've learnt to never underestimate the level of laziness in others.

I'll play devil's advocate and state that your assertion is not an absolute. Being "clean" does not make you successful, and being "messy" at home does not make you unsuccessful.
I'm sure there are some dudes with clean studio apartments that work at Wendy's. And I'm sure there are some "slobs" that have comfortable lives and/or good jobs.
And I agree that many people like neat and organized and clean. Sure. Does time always allow for a 24/7 clean house? No. Does having many outdoors hobbies affect your clean house. Yes.
Clean is good. But, sometimes I'd rather go rock climbing in the mountains all weekend rather than clean my place. So, my place suffers into the following week. No dirty dishes and food out or anything like that. And I drop my laundry off at the cleaners.
But, God damn any behavior that robs you of thrills, memories, and joy. Being an anal cleaner can be a problem as well. Anal cleaners are anal because they spend so much God damn time at home. Home-bodies are definitely at risk for wasting hours that add up to days/years of there lives wasted cleaning or playing world of Warcraft, playing fantasy sports (I still don't understand that at all), or doing whatever the fuck at home.
Your dwelling has the potential to rob you of valuable time living. Find the balance. Cheers.

I like a clean place. Will I have a boner while smiling on my deathbed thinking about how I kept my dwelling spotless all those years of my life?Fuck no. LOL. Clean is a good thing. But, its essentially worthless when your time on earth is coming to an end.
Memories of adventures, women, thrills, good times, milestones, etc will be on your mind as your body fades into oblivion. Cheers, Muhfukkas.

I live in an organized mess. Everything is in drawers and I have lots of shelf and desk space, but out on that desk space is shit I'm doing. Be it de-magnetized tools to work on a computer, book I'm reading, one of my smaller projects or sketches for a project etc. I had a few women comment I'm too clean when I go out of the way and clean my room before bringing them in there. Odd right? But most women are a mess, they just toss their clothes and joke 'yeah I'm not a clean person LOL' I mean I don't care you are flinging your clothes off in my room, that shit happens, but they act as if being messy is a cool thing.
This is where things get weird. When I leave like one change of clothes out on my computer chair, a few tools out, a few drawers open or have stuff out (I have organizers too) and it looks like I'm clean yet also busy as hell they commented how awesome clean my room is. Like really? I had it spotless and have gotten negative comments or no comments, leave a slight organized mess I have gotten several positive comments. Any takers on explaining this? I'm too tired right now and meeting a gal when I wake up, best I have is it shows I'm "alpha" by actually having a life instead of being an OCD "beta"......this is a guess :/
it makes you seem like you got your shit together. clean but not pushing OCD, it makes women feel comfortable and your space more natural because it has a bit of "you" to the environment

Jenga tower of trash... Oh those college years lol
[–]starkiwi 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Summary: Perhaps there is no better way to tell how much a man has his shit together than by how organized he is and how neat and clean he keeps his dwelling and possessions.
Once you do have your shit together, you'll begin to notice this in others too (and judge them on it). You'll realize how obvious it is to tell what type of guy someone is by the way they treat their body and environment - and how you too must have once been silently judged in this way.
Make no mistake, this isn't about dressing stylish, having the latest gadgets or fashions, or keeping everything in OCD perfection. It's about keeping your environment clean and tidy and keeping your body in the same way. That means no smells, no stains, no dirt. Washing your hands, cleaning under your nails, showering regularly. Not leaving pieces of trash or old food around, sticky coffee stains or smelly cigarette butts next to the place you work, sleep, or eat. People notice these things and will assume that this is the type of person that you are, that you always have been, and that this is your station in life.
tldr: Nothing puts poverty on display more clearly than someone who can't keep themselves or their environment clean.

Great post. As an aside, if I may add, please for the love of god, re-rack your fucking plates and put the dumbbells back to where they were when you're done in the gym. It's infuriating and confusing how can people not give a shit about the environment where they spend considerable amount of their time every day.

It makes perfect sense to keep a clean/organized living space. Why wouldn't the same principle of discipline and self-improvement not apply to the home as it does the body?

I disagree. Look at Einstein's desk, or any of the great literary men of the last century. Hell, my desk/room has books and papers strewn about and I consider myself productive. Edit: Great Einstein quote: "If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?"

This will unnecessarily consume your time. Cleaning stuff in batches is a lot faster. I tend to throw stuff around when my attention is fixed on something else and then just clean up once in 1-3 days.

just have a set schedule for everything so you can keep it off your mind until then. For example i have monthly cleaning schedules for some things and for others its weekly depending on need

This is essentially right, but like all of TRP should be enjoyed with a grain of salt. If you have an important appointment or university exam coming up, cleaning up instead of preparing would be procastrination too, as you focus on low priority tasks instead of immediate high priority tasks.
So: Generally keep your flat clean but do not clean it if you have other, more important shit to do first!

Make it a rutine. I clean my place every sunday. When I was doing my military service me and my group had to clean our room and all the showers every morning, 7 days a week! Antother group had the toilets and so on. It made me realise the importance of living in a clean area.
A friend of mine and his ugly, fat stripper to a gf live in the shittiest appartment I've ever seen. It's really skanky. His gf got many mental illness diagnoses and he is lazy coming from a home with a mother cleaning his room all his life. Anyway, since he moved to her apartment he gets sick at least once every month due to pollution from all garbage and shit in their apartment. Living like this creates allergies in the long term.
Do yourself a favor and clean brothers.
