I'm pretty much done with mainline gaming via PS4, Xbox after this gen. I just can't take seeing the hobby I used to love crumble. Not necessarily from feminism like I encourage female protagonist in a game like Horizon it was great. Now it has pushed to an unbalanced point. The corporate greed in the industry, the push for customized characters and guns over fun and exciting game play, level design and immersive environments and mechanics. Everything going online only is by far the worse offense now. Algorithms that influence outcomes based on scoring factors.

I think if Nintendo will be around I'll probably pick up thier console still but we will see Nintendo as great as they are do not have a huge appeal in this industry like they use to despite the games they make be perfect everytime. Other then that it's on to music perhaps. I seem to spend more time listening to music then I do anything else now. Might have a knack to playing.

Just like with movies and TV series, the times they are a-changing. Femininity is promoted, masculinity purged. There's a whole market out there waiting to be exploited and EA has always been about the money, never about the gamer. It makes sense to some degree, I never liked playing female characters in games as I couldn't identify with them and I expect women to have the same issue.

I think the problem is that men and women want different kind of experiences and the solution would be to have two different kind of games and you're not going to get those.You're going to get a weird mismash of both I suppose. Right now they're trying to convert games men like to play to games women like to play but at some point we'll probably be seeing games entirely aimed at women.

I stopped buying AAA-titles a long time ago and stuck with indy titles, they tend to be more true to what the developer had in mind as opposed to what the marketing department thinks will be PC enough to sell.

As someone that played a shitload of games before, this has been happening since like 2012-2014 or something. And not just with women, but trans, gays and blacks too. Take Detroit: Become human (another game) for example. Guess who's the leader of the androids (or at least gives out orders to one of the main characters)? Fat black woman.

Yeah, videogames sort of suck now for a lot of reasons. I don't have a problem with female characters its just a lot of them are very poorly written or do things that are outright unbelievable.

If you're familiar with Anita Sarkeesians "Tropes against women in video games" or whatever, you might remember the "Man with boobs trope" Where Anita summarizes that female characters are often written with masculine character traits and she believes that to be a problem and I actually agree with her but for different reasons. I think its just outright cringy to have Charlize Theron beating up two secret agents with a high-heel shoe or have an overpowered redhead babe fighting in WWII.

Female characters can be done right in video games, writers are just lazy.

One good female character is Ellie from the Last Of Us. The combat and the way she plays really gives you the impression that you're a little girl and can't go around bricking everyone in the face like Joel can. It doesn't take away from the experience at all since guns are such a great equalizer and Ellie has a rouge-ish personality that changes drastically as the story goes on. (Ellies personality change through her experiences in the story is in my opinion one of the best character developments in video game history.)

Anyway I've sort of shyed away from video games too because quality in gameplay and writing has taken a nosedive in the last few years with a few exceptions. Witcher 3 was amazing. Some well written (and modeled ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) female characters in that too.

You can write a powerful, feminine and compassionate woman its just harder than making a character based entirely off the fact that they are "not like other goils"

Well, I work in the video game industry, and having gone to plenty of gatherings of industry professionals I’ll say that while SJWs aren’t the majority, they are by far the most vociferous and influential; and often are the people rising to power quickly in the field.

The recent influx of identity politics and pushing of postmodernist values in games isn’t surprising in the least.

Also, most of the new kids on the block are coming from university environments, which have recently been breeding grounds for extreme leftist thinking and witch hunt mentality.

So this is indeed the reality of future gaming at least for the next few years most likely.

That being said, I think video games should serve as the place to express these sort of things.
It’s all about fantasy, and in my opinion, these issues should be left to iron themselves out normally in the real world instead of by force; but in a game; anything goes.

The trouble I have is the fear that they will try to silence other types of fantasies, as extreme socialist groups tend to do.

If it does become that way; where the “fear of bad influence” will dictate extreme censorship among game devs, then all is lost.

Luckily, most game devs make a living off creating violent killing simulations, and will be among the last people in the world to admit that video games influence real world action.

I would like to point out that this was inevitable. Women as consumers are a lot less frugal with there money. There's a reason women's deoderent is more expensive and less effective. As long as there is a demand from women for video games, there will be more and more female characters. Since more and more women are finding themselves unable to find partners due to body acceptance or feminism or just an inability to find a suitable partner there will be more and more women using video games for escapism. I don't see any problem with companies profiting off of women playing video games or advertising to them.

Sadly it was only a matter of time. Most major game developers are now owned by massive corporate empires that are filled with diversity hires ready to virtue signal how they are on board with feminism. The bioware montreal studio (before it got shut down after the complete failure of mass effect andromeda) had a couple of extremely racist writers/studio leads. Someone made a montage of their twitter rantings which were straight up racist remarks against white people and how bad they all are.

This years E3 was filled with quite bit of female empowerment for sure. The only game I saw that really did a female character properly was probably Gears of War 5. She looked feminine, wore appropriate armor for what she does, had female emotions, and wasn't trying to be a man. Tomb Raider is also pretty good but it does feature a 120 pound woman effortlessly beating up 200 pound men.

It's a continuation of taking movies that have been done already, and supplanting the male character with women i.e. "Ghostbusters" (2016) and "Ocean's 8." Instead of writing new material with female leads, they rehash already done and successful stuff without male leads.

On the surface it seems great to the superficial PC crowd who only care about equality of outcome, but the relaity is that it is the exact opposite of what feminism, #metoo, #timesup, etc. are supposed to be about.

If they cared about any of it they would, as I stated, write new, original material with female roles. Instead they do the bare minimum, force female roles into already done and existing male roles for no other reason than to sell movies, twice, and virtue signal at the same time; everyone jack and jills each other off and the women being "empowered" are actually being exploited.

In the case of video games, especially with the WWII example, they took an established role (male, US soldier in 1941 - 1945) and instead putting in a woman. Women were involved in WWII, but not as soldiers; no women in the Island-hopping campaign, no women during the Normandy landings, no women being air dropped in France. Women were relegated to non-combat, no field roles. Otherwise, they were part of the French resistance. Sure, they could say, this is an alternate timeline/universe where women fought in WWII... except it's bullshit because it's only one woman, and it's in a game using the backdrop of a war that's been done a thousand times over... so instead of writing new, interesting material, they just plopped a woman into already existing and overly-copied material.

I guarantee you that game was made with a man in mind and some "diversity" contractor told the project manager and everyone above the project manager that recent trends indicate a female lead would do well here and every coder, tester, and manager facepalmed.

So they put a woman in.

It's not feminism, it's femploitation.

I've seen some trailers though, and the new Assassin's creed is horseshit: you can choose the gender of your character which is supposed to be a Spartan warrior; where in hell have there been Spartan female warriors? There is more and more female gamers nowadays thanks to social media and fool beta orbiters who validate these chicks. It feels cheap though and somehow fake. It's always sounds like "male experience emulation".

It's kinda insulting since I don't generally care about their gender, its about how they are written in the game. Companies are going, "Here's a woman. There are many more. I don't remember these characters because of their gender or "woman can do anything". They were memorable and amazing characters. Their story, goals, struggles and how you believed they were actual people is what makes them interesting.

Feminists will go, "But there is MORE MALE CHARACTERS THAN WOMAN". True. But that doesn't make them better or more interesting than their counterparts. I could argue that woman characters are BETTER WRITTEN than the males. Marcus Fenix from Gears of War? Throughout the game he's just this angry sour character from start to finished. Start of the game, "Im angry", Game/War ended, "Im still angry". No character development!

I think customers need to extra careful because they are STILL companies that have to make money. They could lie and say, "Here is X because we support that group" but could actually mean, "Here is X because its a selling point and we want money."

I don’t play video games much anymore either - mostly just little Nintendo games (like any true alpha male), so I’m not exposed to any of this feminization stuff. But I remember years ago with the Half-Life 2 episodes, how Alyx went from a somewhat charming sidekick to completely stealing your agency, that really pissed me off. One escort mission is fine, but the entire story shifts to revolve around her out of nowhere, and you can’t so much as unlock a door without her help. She decides where you go. She does all the talking for you. It’s nuts. Completely ruined the tone of the games, where up until that point, you were basically a one man army AND a theoretical physicist. I remember when it was fresh that the players were totally schmoozed by the detailed facial expressions (impressive at the time) and her being “hot”. They didn’t see any of the feminist stuff coming at all.

I love video games especially a story-driven RPG. So I have no problem with lesbian scene. The Last of Us was incredible and this one looks even better. Ellie looks more kick-ass than any other female protagonist on the market right now so look past it.

Also recently I played Uncharted Lost Legacy starring Chloe and Nadine. Uncharted hate Nadine because she overpowered 2 full grown men in a fight scene but this didn't stop me enjoying Lost Legacy because 1. I'm not that emotionally invested in Nathan 2. Chloe is a babe, she's sexy, witty and with the right level of sass. Nadine was also a great companion, she grew up a tomboy following in her fathers footsteps, I get it. Cool.

Feminism and diversity will keep getting pushed (which is okay within reason) and we should keep a weary eye but the quality of games are still getting better. God of War, The Last of Us, Spiderman, Red Dead Redemption, Death Stranding, Cyberpunk 2077 there's enough room for girl protagonists and macho men protagonists. But as a black guy, I do find it ironic that they are tackling this diversity angle by including more white females when black protagonists have been even more super rare in the history of video games.

Don't over think it as long as you're having fun.

I think it's ok when developers themselves want diversity, as long as it's their will and not political reasons. Expecially in games with original story, even if taken from history.

What really bothers me is when people start harrassing devs when an original story game is showed and the main character is a white male only. I mean, there were riots about Geralt of Rivia (from The Witcher 3 which is also a spin off from a series of fantasy books) was a white male who only dates women, it was a well written character since the books, and it was criticized for being white and not dating other men too. Also happened with the last Legend of Zelda game, people where shocked when they saw the main character was again a white male and had to save a princess

Just recognize that those games are not meant for you, it’s ok. Just like EA wasn’t marketing Battlefront 2 to you, these other games are not meant for you also. It’s fine. Variety is good.

Video games were essentially my life for a good 25 years and even I think it's retarded to think that one should look to them for identity and validation. Honestly this sounds like something a poor bastard who grew up without a decent male influence in their life would complain about.

All you're seeing is capitalism in action. Entertainment products in general are courting females because they are a relatively new demographic with an increasing amount of disposable income and time. It's nothing personal, and it isn't like they are saying they don't want the business of males, they just want to improve their bottom line and sell more products to more people.

Personally I welcome more female avatars and characters in games, because when I choose to waste time staring at a screen, I enjoy seeing some overexaggerated tits and ass. Frankly I don't know what there is to complain about. If you don't like these avatars or the fact that games are including them, then don't play. Instead of bitching that developers are no longer catering to your specific interests, try being a man and create something on your own. Might I suggest tabletop games, where you can make your own setting from scratch?

Doctor Who is now a woman. The Doctor was/is a huge role model to me. He's funny and confident and holds knowledge over anything else. And now he's a woman. Male and female solve problems differently, think differently. I'm okay with a female lead, but my problem is that the game force them to solve problems the way males would do it, blow shits up, kill everything on sight, wrestle men twice her size (a lot of women can kick my ass, sure, but the media portrayal is too much of a stretch), and various other silly shits.

This is not female empowerment, this is like me playing make-believe with my daughters, fake swords, fake dragons, fake lava, etc. so she wins and thinks she did it all by herself. That's not empowerment, that's setting up false expectations of "the world can be easily bent to my will without any resistance", setting her to fail in the real world.
