Not everyone is going to be attracted to you, and not everyone is going to be attractive to me. Attraction isn't a choice. They either think you're good looking or not.
[–]theheftyboy7 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Very true.
[–]failatsomething 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You can do things to be more attractive. Attraction, especially for women, isn't really about looks.

👏🏼yes well said friend
[–]olronk 9 years ago [recovered] (24 children) | Copy Link
I don't think that's true.
Women will definitely make a choice on whether or not they're attracted to you.
[–]Frogskull 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link
Do you make a choice whether you're attracted to women or not?
[–]olronk 9 years ago [recovered] (20 children) | Copy Link
Yes, there are some I find attractive and some that I dont.
[–]ryanelston 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
But why did you find them attractive? At the end of the day did you not simply 'feel' attracted to them? Where did that feeling of attraction come from? Did it simply well up from deep inside you based on processes that you have no insight into or control over?
Where exactly was the choice?
[–]olronk 9 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
I found them attractive because they were good people, good looking and fun.
The choice is made the same way everyone else makes the choice.
They look at you and see if you are a attractive, do you have good social status, good personality, etc.
And when you check off the boxes that they like then they are attracted to you.
That's it.
When a woman rejects someone they have made a decision to not be attracted to them by saying no.
But yes, you absolutely have control over your thoughts and actions. That's what the brain does.
[–]ryanelston 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I too would love to believe that everyone is perfectly logical they'd simply and objectively look at all the different qualities as a person and do an a/b column in their heads and make a well-reasoned decision whether or not to be attracted to them.
People may or may not be aware of all of the qualities that you're mentioning. People will certainly use those qualities to justify why they decided to be attracted to a person after the fact.
The reality is at the end of the day they simply 'feel' attracted. The feeling comes from the void, it's based on biological processes that they have no insight into nor control over, there wasn't any choice to feel those feelings.
This is getting into the Free Will argument, and it will probably devolve into semantics about what 'choice' means. :)
[–]olronk1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
look at all the different qualities as a person and do an a/b column in their heads and make a well-reasoned decision whether or not to be attracted to them.
Well that is kinda what they do. Whether they know it or not but it is the entire reason why someone is attracted to someone else.
People may or may not be aware of all of the qualities that you're mentioning.
Well the number one thing is looks so if they see you in person then that's the most tangible thing they will go on when it comes to deciding whether or not you're attractive.
No I understand what you're saying. At some point it goes into conscious choices vs. subconscious.
I mean to be honest I've never had a woman find me attractive so I guess you can't really put too much weight to my thoughts but I'm only speaking for myself when it comes to decisions on attractiveness.
[–]Frogskull 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
That's not a choice, you can't just find Taylor Swift incredibly attractive and then the next minute just decide no she's the ugliest person in existence. The human brain is powerful but you can't just change your feelings like that
[–]olronk 9 years ago [recovered] (14 children) | Copy Link
Funny example, I've actually met Taylor Swift at my job twice now, she's pretty cool and chill people.
But no I personally don't find her attractive. She's very pretty and great person and all that, but not my type I guess.
Let's say that I were attracted to someone, if I find out something I really hate about her then I will no longer be attracted to that person.
Being attracted to someone is a choice you make and if you wanted to you can turn that off. Just like with every other thought and action you make on a daily basis. Your brain controls that.
[–]Frogskull 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
That's still not a choice, because you finding out something you hate about her isn't up to you to decide. It just happens. You cant suddenly be attracted to her after that.
[–]olronk 9 years ago [recovered] (12 children) | Copy Link
Well yea I've decided that I'm not attracted to someone. The only way that changes is if I choose to develop feelings.
And if those feelings aren't reciprocated or whatever then you just drop them and move on.
It's the same way if you really wanna buy something that you can afford but is expensive, if you buy it you made the choice and thought it over but it's all in your control.
You get to decide whether your want something. No one makes that decision for you.
[–]Frogskull 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
You don't decide whether you want something. You either want it or you don't. What you DO decide is whether or not you'll take action to get whatever that is.
Another example. You cant 'decide' whether or not you're attracted to a dead body. No matter what you tell yourself, there's no ways you'll be able to switch from disgust to lust so quickly. It's not a decision you can make
In your head you do make those decisions, just because someone can't do it doesn't mean they are not able to.
When I want something it's because I decided that that's what I want for reasons x,y and z. Those are the reason why I want that. That's my decision.
In your example seems more like an extreme of psychological disorders, I don't think those are common enough to be used as an example for everyone.
[–]PMme_your_success1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Let's say you're going to buy food. Your body craves sugar, junk food, lots of carbs. You can decide to eat healthy foods and vegetables, but you can't change your wanting to have junk food, it's in your body, it's out of your control. You can get used to not having it, but that is not the same as deciding whether you like it or not.
Well it depends on what you crave.
I've personally done away with sugars and fast food, etc so I chose not to crave that. I actually do not want it so after eating better and respecting my body it is in my control of what I want.
[–]PMme_your_success 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
You didn't decide, you just have this opinion. You can't change it, that's how you feel and that's it.
[–]olronk 9 years ago [recovered] (6 children) | Copy Link
If you're talking about attraction then yes I can decided it. I've never been attracted to someone that I wasn't.
If I find someone attractive it's because of the reasons that I thought about and considered attractive, hence I made the decision that I do find her attractive.
If that person tells me I hate you and don't ever talk to me ever again, then now I am no longer attracted to her because I know she hates my guts so there is no reason to be.
Again, thoughts and action are controlled. We do it every day.
Dude, we're obviously focusing in physical atraction here, and no, nobody can control that. Sure, maybe you can say you "decided" to find certain values atractive, but when it comes to body and face, you can't decide.
Let's say you met someone online, talked to her, and she has an amazing personality, but then you see her face and you find her extremely ugly. Sure, you can look past that, but you cannot DECIDE that now you find that extremely ugly person physically atractive, you can just like her despite her apearance.
Another example, let's say that you want to, for whatever reason, like a drug addict, as in find her atractive. If she doesn't match values that you uphold, you CANNOT make the choice to suddently find her atractive, because atraction doesnt come from your concious decisions, they come from values you hold from experience.
Well there are some aspects that are considered conventionally attractive. For example just look at male celebrities and why all women love them. It's because they are conventionally attractive.
If you meet someone online and then in person where you find out she's either not who she said she was or you don't find her attractive in the least bit then you can at that point just decide that you no longer like her for either 1.lying to you or 2. not being physically attracted to her at all. In which case you can still be friends with her but you might not feel the same way as you did before you met her.
But again, that will be your choice on whether or not you still like her.
If I found a drug addict whom I thought was attractive but then found out she was addicted to drugs then I can no longer be attracted to her because I don't condone that or want to support people doing that. I can try and help her but if I want to I can just say no thanks and not be a part of it.
Again, in my experience you can choose who you like and who you don't.
Go outside and look at a few people and ask yourself whether or not you like them. Chances are you'll be able to make multiple decisions on your own and be able to decide whether or not you find someone attractive.
You're completely missing the point I'm trying to make... Forget it man, this discussion is going nowhere.
[–]olronk2 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
We can just agree to disagree man.
It's all good.
[–]kancitbassdud1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Dude, I think you are confusing deciding that you are attracted and realizing that you are attracted.
You don't think to yourself "it want to be attracted to her....Done! Now I am!" You think to yourself "She looks like this(which I like) and acts like that(which I like)....I find her attractive because of those qualities!"
You don't think to yourself "it want to be attracted to her....Done! Now I am!"
Well I do that from time to time if I meet someone that I think is attractive.
But if I find out she's a horrible person then guess what, I don't think I'll be attracted to them anymore because I don't like being around toxic people.
[–]banditcleaner 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
attraction is VERY MUCH a choice, at least when you tie personality into it. if it's purely just looks, it's less of a choice, but at the same time, you can decide you don't actually like their looks one day and another day you might. it is a choice. I agree mr. olronk
[–]olronk0 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

LOOKS DO MATTER.
BUT
Looks matter a lot less to women than they do men.
Also, "looks" are a different thing for women. For women, "looks" include how you carry yourself, how you act, your confidence, etc... Also, some girls just have weird preferences.
Also, even though looks matter, you can't really control many aspects of your appearance, and you have no idea if your looks are good enough for a particular girl, so thinking/obsessing over it doesn't mean anything.
[–]sconosciuto1 9 years ago [recovered] (17 children) | Copy Link
Another coping mechanism to make yourself feel better. You should hang out with a good-looking guy for a day and see how females treat him vs you. Also Tinder is there to prove looks theory. Now cope some more.
[–]Shake_n_bake90 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I have a few good looking friends who get "attention" from girls however since they aren't that confident, the girls run a mile as soon as they pick up on their personality. Where I have some mates who aren't that attractive but constantly pull girls because they don't give a shit and are high energy.
Does looks make it easier, yes. However, guys who aren't traditionally good look can still pull attractive girls.
Tinder is designed to be based on looks so that's not a very strong argument.
[–]Woujo 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
Another coping mechanism to make yourself feel better.
I bet you're ugly. This is something only ugly guys say.
Like I said, looks matter, a lot, but they're not enough. As somebody else here said, lots of good looking guys get attention from girls but then fuck it up because they don't have the whole package. 99% of girls would rather be with a less attractive guy that has the full package (confidence, personality, interesting life) than a hot guy. I know tons of hot girls that are dating guys that look like butt. Women are more complicated than men and don't only care about looks.
By the way, I say this as a good looking guy. I do agree that it's easier for me because I just look good (I also look weird, which helps polarizes women quicker into liking or not liking me). But only ugly guys think looks are everything.
[–]olronk 9 years ago [recovered] (11 children) | Copy Link
I mean you're saying it yourself now, some guys are ugly and that's the hand that they are dealt.
You can't really look down on ugly guys when you're good looking yourself, you wouldn't really understand what it means to not get women's attention.
[–]Woujo 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
I am being objective and trying to give a balanced perspective, rather than just saying "nobody fucks ugly guys." It's more complicated than that. I know tons of ugly guys that get puss. It's possible. It's just that looks also matter a lot.
[–]olronk 9 years ago [recovered] (9 children) | Copy Link
I mean if someone has people who are attracted yo him then I don't think they qualify as "ugly" simply by definition.
You can't really say someone is ugly if people find him attractive, maybe he's just ugly to you.
I'm talking about the actual ugly/below average looking men that women don't like.
But yes, speaking from experience as one of those less fortunate guys, looks do matter a lot.
[–]Woujo 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Nope, you're wrong. You're still thinking in the paradigm of "attractiveness = looks," which is wrong. Women are attracted by a lot of things other than looks.
[–]olronk 9 years ago [recovered] (7 children) | Copy Link
If you think someone is ugly but there are other people who think he's attractive then that just means you personally think he's ugly and that's it. Doesn't mean he actually is because other people don't seem to think so.
Well yea because if you're not attractive then people aren't going to be attracted to you no?
When have you ever seen a woman date someone that they're not attracted to?
Have you ever seen a woman with a man who she wasn't physically attracted to?
[–]Woujo 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
ATTRACTIVENESS IS MORE THAN LOOKS. Why are you not understanding this?
Women usually are attracted to the guys they date, but it's not based on looks. They are attracted to their confidence, demeanor, interests, etc...
Yes it happens all the fucking time. Also, women become physically attracted when they are attracted to your life.
[–]olronk 9 years ago [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link
What I mean is that if the physical attraction isn't there then they're not going to be attracted to you.
But doesn't it start with looks, what you're initially based on? That's why some women think guys are great but would not date them because they're simply not attracted to them.
Yes it happens all the fucking time. Also, women become physically attracted when they are attracted to your life
I can take your word for it because I don't know anything about relationships, but I personally have never seen a woman who didn't like their partner/was not attracted to them in a romantic way.
[–]Woujo1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
THIS IS NOT TRUE.
I can take your word for it because I don't know anything about relationships
THEN WHY ARE YOU ARGUING WITH ME
I'm not really arguing here. It's just a discussion.
I'm just saying I've never seen a woman date a man who she didn't find attractive.
From what I've seen looks is a defining factor in attraction.
How old are you? When you're younger looks play a bigger role because nobody has accomplished anything. When you get older women want guys with interesting lives and jobs, and guys that have successfully transitioned into adulthood.
I'm not young anymore, definitely well into adulthood which is why I don't know if I've missed the boat on dating. I'm 24, about to be 25.
I've done what I can to transition into adulthood with owning my own assets and whatnot. Taking more responsibilities financially. I've achieved my goals doing that but I don't think that necessarily translates to attracting women.
[–]TheBetterManZA 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Online dating and real life dating are very different beasts. I'm probably at best a 5, perhaps even lower if people notice my slight underbite. Online I get very little attention. Offline I can do much better.
My ex was a 7 when we met and went on a diet, so closer to an 8 around the time we broke up. Would get looks from people on the street and fist bumps from my mates when she wasn't looking.
Have also had a red head 8 and an Indian 8 interested in me. Red head was close to Bryce Dallas Howard in terms of looks and really sweet, but we worked together and I didn't need any potential drama at work coz I desperately needed the job. The indian girl, after discovering I didn't want kids, managed to lock down a men's health cover lookalike who was loaded and fairly smart later.
Now let's assume I'm not talking the biggest load of trash here. In my experience women, more than men, are more forgiving when it comes to looks. This doesn't mean that looks don't matter (you should always attempt to optimise what you have through grooming and exercise), but that men can get away with less in the looks department if they have other attributes.
[–]AR-47 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Looks and confidence both matter. According to online dating surveys, women consider 80% of men "below average". So yeah those top 20% get a lot of action, but the other 80% aren't all constantly getting rejected. Carry yourself well and be confident and you'd be surprised at what you can do.
Well I've known men who can call a very wide variety of women hot or at least good looking.
With women there seems to be a standard conventional attractiveness that some guys just don't meet.
I'm a guy with pretty bad genes but I've done all I can to lose a ton of weight, diet, and gain muscle and all that but I can't really do much about my facial features.
I consider a lot of women with different body types pretty attractive but I've yet to meet one woman who found me attractive so looks matter a ton for women more than they do men imo.

Losing weight / getting fit will definitely make you attractive physically, however looks also matter in terms of facial genetics, and any improvement will only be the lost weight that alters your face shape.
I used to be fat and set about becoming healthier and fitter. I lost a lot of weight and hit the gym, and am probably the fittest I have been. Also, because of my body change, I had to revamp my wardrobe.
None of these improvements have had any positive effect on my lack of facial attractiveness. Unfortunately it's also one of the key areas where looks do matter.
[–]Neoking 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Honestly, losing weight completely changed the way my face looked. Sure, just like you, my facial genetics aren't anything to write home about, but I didn't realize that I actually looked sort of decent/not repulsive with the weight down. Before I lost it, I was a little over 20 pounds overweight, but that's the way I've been most of my life, so I've always had a chubby sort of face.
I actually started getting compliments whenever I wore something nice and complemented it with an appropriate fragrance. That feeling was completely alien to me. I feel like losing the weight took my face from a 4 to a 5.5.
How much did you lose?
[–]JimBeamAndCoke2016 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I probably lost 25kg before I started going to the gym. It's crept up a bit since I've got bigger and gained muscle.
Congrats on seeing an improvement in your facial attractiveness too. Sometimes I see a few overweight guys who facially look pretty good, and I think that they'd do really well if they lost the weight too.
Unfortunately I'm probably a 3 on the looks scale and losing the weight hasn't caused any improvements. Never get compliments or IOI's.
[–]crawleydown 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Those who get better looking facially just have good bone structures. As you have witnessed, sometimes you'll see a complete fat ass who has a nice looking face, with angles etc. He's lucky enough to have a good, strong, non-recessed bones. Even with the extra fat, he still has facial definition
I'm more like you. I was never 'fat', but I used to be very untoned and slightly chubby. I hated my fat, undefined face though. I started working out like a mad-man, got myself a nice 6-pack, but my face remained a little on the ugly side, lol. Shame. I just have slightly small, recessed bones and am probably a 4 or so on the looks scale. Like, sometimes you'll see a bag-of-bones walking around, skinny as shit, but yet his face looks kind of chubby. Same deal as before; Bone structure rules! In order to be 'handsome' i'd need some pretty major surgeries!
Makes it tough as I only approach super hot, much younger girls! I don't see the point otherwise. Shoot for the moon!
[–]Pitchfork51 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
My face changes drastically when I get in really good shape. About maybe 10 lbs before I get into six pack shape my face looks really good. Over that and it's night and day.
But there are some guys whose faces look pretty chiseled even when like 15-20 lbs past that.
[–]rigbed 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Everyone is dealt a hand and this happens to be your cards. It sucks, but your only other choice is not to play the game. Play your best cards, minimize your weaknesses, and you can still have success. FWIW, I'd go out with a butterface with a great ass, and I'm a guy. Girls care even less, although many still obviously care.
[–]olronk 9 years ago [recovered] (10 children) | Copy Link
Well depending on the cards you were dealt you can't really win.
I mean I'm in the same boat as the guy above where I've lost a lot of weight and dieting and all that but my facial features can't change unless I get surgery which I'm not comfortable doing.
But saying just go with what you have isn't really a viable strategy when you're not attractive.
For men it's easy to look past flaws because we are attracted to a wide variety of women and body types.
But for women there is a standard on what's considered conventionally attractive and looks matter way more for them.
[–]anchpop -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
If you work out, style your hair and dress sharp, girls will be attracted to you. Your face isn't ugly enough to cancel that out.
I do work out about 2-3 times a week. I style my hair as well, and when I lost a lot of my weight I was pretty much forced to change my entire wardrobe I had since HS.
But yea I've never had a woman attracted to me so I don't think those correlate.
Also my face isn't really attractive tbh so I do still have some work to do to counter act my bad genes, I mean if I sent you a pic you'd know what I'm talking about and what I have to work with.
[–]Stondis 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
I can't agree with you. I'm the same as you mostly, I'm fit but my face is ridden with acne and I can't be described as handsome by anyone. I have heard couple of times about some girls who have been attracted to me, one of them told me that face to face. It's not ALL about the face, but it's goddamn large amount anyways. I'm keeping on working on myself and I believe I can feel like I'm attractive, some beautiful day :) Until then, it's work work work towards it!

I disagree with this. The face is the thing that is noticed and gets your foot in the door in terms of attraction. Body and dress sense are both add-ons that will help your cause. The only trait than can potentially overcome a lack of facial attractiveness is confidence.

Drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep, that will do more for your face than just about anything else. Also use moisturizer at least daily. I like to use toner, let that sit on my skin for about an hour while I eat dinner/ get ready for bed, then use my moisturiser.

Naw. There are PLENTY of 'ugly' guys. Guys with crooked noses and bad smiles and uneven features and bad skin.
But because their "IMAGE" is good, they're socially adept, and have a variety of skills..... these flaws become 'sexy' distinguishing marks and attributes.
Learn to play guitar, play pool, give a speech, and cook. Then, your awkward face is sexy.

No worries, just used to people believing what they want to believe and making people who point things out, cite and argue anything they inherently doubt lol.

WRONG! You think just because a guy is short, having a sexually attractive lean body won't help? You think an "average joe" black/asain/mexican/indian dude who has the body of wolverine won't have a slight advantage over his skinny or fat competitors? Dude, no. If you don't want to lift, then don't. However, don't go spreading your ideologies because you think they're true when they're completely false. Lifting is not meant to help you get women, it's meant to help YOU. Building a lean body and refraining from being sedentary/lazy will only help you in all areas of your life. Once you've been called "hot" when you're shirtless while you're making out with a girl and she's stroking your sculpted body, you'll understand what I mean.

Tall and white? I'm as tanned (literally brown) as they come and I workout 4 or so times a week. Ever since I've been getting fit it's helped with my game tenfold as it's created more confidence in my game. Oh and mind you im 5"9

How about "looks aren't an excuse"?
So many people come whining to this subreddit "I'm not good looking enough", "I'm to short", "I'm too fat". Just fucking do it. There are other subreddits for whining. This one is for doing.
Hitting the gym is fantastic. Not only will you look better, and feel better, but you will pull better.
But don't wait until you are fit. Go out now and open ladies like you were already buff.
Do it now
[–]olronk 9 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link
Well the difference is that if you're a below average looking guy you can't "just do it".
If you're not attractive then trying to attract a woman isn't going to work out very well.
I've been going to the gym for about 2 years now and have lost a ton of weight but I still have a lot of work to do to overcompensate for my bad facial features.
But just understand there that are below average guys like me out there who don't look like you do and are actually affected by looks.
[–]abstractpickupartist 9 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
This is just an excuse. Guys uglier and fatter than you get laid every day. And I'm one of them.
You get to decide now: do I want to get laid, or not?
If you want to spend the rest of your life whining, there are subreddits for that.
If you want to do something about it, welcome.
Women do care if you take responsibility for your life, and are secure, so work on inner game (checkout "Models").
Now get the fuck out there, and have an interesting life. Women care a fuck of a lot more about that then they do about looks.
I mean when people say someone is "ugly" and yet people find them attractive then by definition they aren't really ugly at that point. Maybe to your personal taste they might be but you can't call someone legit ugly if people find them attractive.
Also I doubt you're uglier than me if people are finding you attractive.
I would love to find someone to date someday and of course getting laid is on my bucket list. But not everybody gets to do everything on their bucket list. You try your best but don't let it define your life or let it shatter you when it doesn't happen.
I am, I'm currently working on myself and fixing a lot of personal issues. Mental, physical and financial. So far I've hit my goals excellently.
I still have a lot of work to do though, more goals in mind in order to compete with a lot of the guys out there.
[–]abstractpickupartist1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
someone is "ugly" and yet people find them attractive
Exactly!
Now realize this applies to you.
Any of these can move you from "unattractive" to "attractive" without changing your looks.
You are doing the right stuff, setting goals, and achieving them. (And yes, girls find this attractive. Girls are hardwired to want a guy sets goals up and knocks them down).
Now add doing social activities, or braggable activities, to your life. You are ready to do that.
You'll do great.

"Their personality makes that judgment" - well said.
To me its simple - be decent (as is everyone else), but be self-confident. This is the key to everything in life. It's hard for some to develop self-confidence, because it isn't something you just push a button to activate and, voilá, you're mountain. Self-confidence develops over time, with maturity and with a concept of what the world means to you and what really has value in life. People who have a crisis of identity haven't decided what they think, and are more gullible and insecure until they have.
As for looks or personality... if you're not taking any action and trying to make contact, then nothing will happen. It doesn't matter if you look good or if you have a great personality. The biggest issue in dating is fear and always will be. Thats why people turn to Pick Up Artist-material in the first place. We transfer our own insecurity to the heads of everyone we want to be with and reject ourselves before we give them the opportunity to do so.
So screw looks and personality, get rid of fear and anxiety of talking to girls first is my advice.
[–]Windstrings 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Losing weight and lifting have improved my life in so much more than dating-related stuff. Just feeling stronger is already enough of a benefit. There´s this primal feeling about being strong that simply exudes manliness and inspires confidence. And of course, being strong communicates high status so what´s not to love about taking care of yourself. A time will come when you will have to physically carry your woman and boy let me tell you, that is as manly as it gets. I agree with you OP, I hate when people give the typical advice of "Just wait and things will get better", I am of a mind with you in that we cannot wait for life to just happen, we have to take action.
P.S. Train your forearms gentlemen. Your handshake will be firm, your arms will look more vascularized, you will be able to arm wrestle well enough and ladies associate big forearms with manly men. Stay buff.

It all boils down to mindset. I think you and I, and the others commenting on this post were gifted with an improvement mindset. Is this how you think?
Person 1: I hope I become a millionaire.
Person 2: I wish I had a six pack.
Person 3: I want to be a millionaire.
Me: I WILL become a millionaire, I am GOING to get a six pack, and I am GOING to be better than every single goddamn person in this room.
I think of life as a competition, and that if someone can become a millionaire or get a six pack then I can become a millionaire or get a six pack. I've got a six pack and am almost done with my first year of college. I'm headed down the right path. Sounds like you're doing well with life too.
[–]elcarlosmiguel 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
you speak the truth its all about not having victim mentality and hard work
[–]Windstrings 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Agreed. I don´t think of life as each one to his own, or everyone tearing down each other in eternal struggle, however competition is simply natural and to succeed we have to improve ourselves. Life is well for me, I´m on my way to becoming a doctor. I´d say we´re both going down the right paths. Keep striving brother.
Well you can't just blindly take action.
For instance right now I'm not really prepared to date or look for women. I'm still hitting the gym and dieting and all that but I have more physical/mental work that I need to do before I can think of trying to attract someone because I still have some issues that are going to impede on that.
I like mountain climbing, and I always go by myself and find it therapeutic. But you cannot go unprepared, you need the right equipment, the right timing and the right mindset. I believe you need to be prepared in order to succeed at something.
[–]JanusForester 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Once you do these things girls will naturally flock to you.
Funny, I go to university, and I know and see an awful lot of handsome, fit guys who get zero female attention. And I mean, ZERO. Unless they make a move or got insane swag, most girls will not look at them. It blew my mind when I first noticed it, and it's quite eye-opening.
Advice to people: Do not get fit to get girls. You won't, trust me. You won't start magically getting girls approaching you unless you've got the moves. I bulked up somewhat from being a total stringbean, and I can confidently say that if I wasn't making the moves and trying to change my behavior, I would still be invisible to women.
Get fit because it helps to be strong and physically adept. Also keep in mind that muscles are merely a tool for the mind to coordinate. Getting girls is more brain than brawn.
I can confirm this. UA by chance?
[–]saulisdating 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
Sorry to break this to you, but it's not really true.
Looks matter in the sense that they will provide you with more CHANCES, and your whole seduction process will be somewhat easier since you'll make a better first impression and will be afforded a few occasional fuckups.
But ultimately, they don't matter in the end for you to get the girl, unless she's specifically looking for a ONS, a fling, or a fuckbuddy, where your looks matter more than everything else.
For normal relationships, however, it's the complete opposite.
Case in point - I had a client who's a Canadian male model. He hooked up with ease with some girls at bars who were drunk and were just there for a fuck. But he could never get a serious girlfriend, because he neglected developing himself as a person and only relied on his looks.
He complained that with solid 9's and 10's his dates wouldn't last more than 20-30 minutes before they left and gave up on him, since he was boring, self-absorbed, and so on.
I can even give myself as an example. Throughout my life, I've been in varying stages of fitness and handsomeness - I had a very fit body with a sixpack during university, and got laid occasionally. But it wasn't until I learned and mastered how attraction and seduction works that I got laid whenever I wanted... and that was a few years AFTER my university experience. And by that time I didn't have time to exercise or couldn't due to several big injuries... so I ended up being flabby and much less "visually appealing".
And I got laid MUCH MORE than when I was super fit.
So go figure... Game is much more important than looks. Your looks give you a slight advantage, but if you've got your shit together and know how seduction works - they are IRRELEVANT.
The thing is the unlike in your examples some guys like myself aren't very good looking.
So the best thing that we can do is to lift, diet and groom ourselves and change our clothes to be the best that we can be.
Looks don't matter if you are already attractive. But for the below average men looks play a very big part because if you're not attractive then you're not gonna get anyone's attention.
[–]saulisdating -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm completely average when it comes to conventional looks.
Well yea, average can be worked with.
It's when you're below average that you'll have issues compensating for how your face looks. Trust me, that's the situation I'm in.
[–]IAmVeryAttractive 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Looks really should be emphasized more on this sub. Your appearance is your first impression. She will have an opinion of you before you even open your mouth.
Smell is important too.
[–]DiViNiTY1337 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Definitely. The thing lots of people mean when they say looks don't matter when it comes to game is this; say, hypothetically, that there's a scale that goes from 0 - 100. 0 is when the girl has zero attraction towards you. 100 is when she's soaking and literally begging for your dick.
If you're fat, ugly and balding with a stained shirt a size too small you're going to be starting at 0 with almost every girl. But if you're fit, have nice hair, and your clothes show off that impeccable chest of yours, you'll start at 30, or 40, or even 50.
But in any case you will still need to work yourself up to 100, regardless of what you look like. If you look good though, you don't have to work as hard.
[–]theheftyboy2 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I've never thought about it that way. I think I just had an epiphany. Thank you lol.
[–]AIRSKI 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Good way of putting it OP. Looks do matter but not as much as people make it seem. Think of an attractive guy that knows it. He approaches the 10 because he knows he's attractive and giving himself "permission" to approach. The girl thinks nothing of it and sees his confidence simply from him being tall and good looking.
The guy that isn't as attractive will approach the same girl. She'll think why is this ugly short guy approaching me, HE MUST BE REALLY COOL if he thinks he can do that.
The only thing looks really determines is the label a woman gives to a guy before interacting with him. Giving yourself permission to approach shows you're actually confident. Looking like a model helps obviously but simply taking care of yourself by working out to stay healthy/not being an overweight slob, dressing well, and carrying yourself with confidence shows you RESPECT YOURSELF. That's what actually makes you attractive.
[–]bergkampinthesheets 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
OP you're kinda right, but you're reading it wrong.
"Looks don't matter" means that unless you have inner game, it won't matter how good you look.
A confident, authentic guy who looks average has a better chance of getting what he wants than a good-looking guy who uses PUA tricks to fake it but has no core, and who hesitates because it will be obvious that he is trying too hard.
Since inner game is about improving the quality of your own life, it's encouraged that you stay fit. But your drive and achievement of self-improvement will turn her on as much as your looks, if not more.
Unfortunately for below average guys like myself this doesn't really work.
[–]paddywacknack 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Bullshit. It might not work as well ,but lucky for you women aren't attracted to just looks. It helps to be well groomed and in good shape because it shows you care about yourself and have your shit together. You aren't going to slay it like Brad Pitt ,but you can attract a lot more women than you think.
Well I've worked on myself for about 2 years now and lost a ton of weight while lifting and dieting.
Due to the big weight loss I had to change my wardrobe and my look so I've done a good job of grooming and all that.
Also working on myself financially.
I know I have things that I have to work on but I've yet to ever attract one woman so I know there is something that I'm doing wrong and I still have work to do.

Looks do matter...to a certain degree. What matters more is CHARISMA, and how you carry yourself. How?
I'm 5'5", barely 120 pounds, and Mediterranean-looking. I've slept with bombshells who were way taller than me, but that's not to say I don't have a slight disadvantage. You just have to learn to adapt and work around it.

Looks don't matter that much. In fact my most recent hookup happened after a week of no laundry and 3 or 4 days of no shower or shave, wearing dirty work clothes.
Definitely not the end-all be-all, but at the same time you should try to look as good as possible.
If you have good facial attractiveness you can get away with a lot more than if you were less attractive. Women are more forgiving the better looking a guy is.
[–]che-ez -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Women judge attractiveness much more on your clothes and grooming than on your physical dimensions. Not that physical dimensions don't matter, definitely hit the gym and eat less, but it's nowhere near the same for women as it is for men.
Unless you're hideously deformed, you have no excuse.

My theory is that personality is more important to a girl but most ugly guys don't have the personality traits women seek for a sexual partner. Like, confidence, outcome dependence, outgoing behavior, edginess, dominance. Then since guys get turned on by a girls looks, they project that belief on women. When actually girls are more turned on by how a man behaves.
Abs are just accepted standards of attraction for a man. Give to society by hollywood. Giving the guy with abs or muscles instant status. So yes girls like them. but it's because of the given status by having them. Girls like status as well. The thing is put these two guys together and the guy with the personality traits will probably get the girl. Still trying to figure out why girls watch porn though?? If they aren't as turned on by looks like men. What makes them get off by watching porn??. They must be somewhat visual as well.

I wrote an article about this. Looks do matter to a certain point, you just don't need to look like brad pitt in Snatch to get girls. But you can't be a fat piece of shit or a skinny runt who don't care about themselves. The article is here if y'all wanna get deeper: http://www.honestcasanova.com/blog/being-good-looking-is-not-enough/

In my opinion there is some truth to looks dont matter. In my younger days, I used to be extremely conscious of how my face looked despite going to gym 5 days a week and eating a strict diet. Eventually, I took the looks dont matter motto on to give less of a shit about my face and work more on my personality. Now, after trying this for the past year, I never feel weary of how my face looks or in general, how I look in public. I use cologne, dress well and keep my hair trimmed but now instead of doing it or others, I do it for myself.
[–]Naitto 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
A common thing is that looks do matter but the things that matter are actually changeable. Like the way you dress, your hair or your weight. Yeah, of course some things are harder ti change that other, but still, they are changeable.
[–]Garthanthoclops 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I would also like to add: a clean haircut and good fashion sense, especially when coupled with fitness, can drastically improve your looks. Hell, I always had bags under my eyes and was tired, I started to prioritize sleep, the bags went away, and I instantly jumped from probably a 7.5 to a 9/10. I know it sounds a little conceited, but that's just what I was told by some female friends I asked to rate me once the bags disappeared. Take care of yourself, women like that.

Sorry to break it to you but "Looks don't matter" is a term used to make fat people feel better.
Sources?
Looks do matter.
Of course it does, but not to the extent you want to make yourself believe.
Take pride in what you put in your body, exercise and lift.
Or don't , it's a personal choice.
Losing weight has completely benefited my life in all aspects including physical appearance,
So you were fat and now become one of those militant ex fatties?
confidence (yes that includes pulling girls),
That's sad... I mean you are more than just your shell, and if you can't get your confidence from who you are mentally, what you are doing instead of relying on your shallow appearance, well you will see what will happen as you get older.
academics, social life and self improvement (craving knowledge, reading and getting smarter).
And this is just because you are looking better? hahaha funny guy you are.
This is coming from someone turned his life around and went from nerd to jerk. Stop waiting for life to happen and learn to love yourself first and then start focusing on building relationships with women (long term or fwb.. whatever makes you happy). Once you do these things girls will naturally flock to you. Keep in thought that you WILL get shot down, but when life kicks you in the ass you have to pick yourself back up, and learn from your mistakes. Make the decision to change RIGHT NOW. Don't wait until tomorrow or the next day or next week. CHANGE STARTS NOW.
This sounds about right, agreeable. Even though you do something that i witness a lot in people, they see something, they analyze it, and they come to a totally wrong conclusion as to why something worked. Appearance is important, clothing for instance, being fit helps for sure, but it's only one way to get women to want you. If you cannot back it up with a certain set of behaviors, you are fucked, and not in the good way. All the while if you are not looking a male model, you can compensate with behavior and body language. It is always funny to see how people react when i (old guy with shaved head due to receding hairline and thin hair, having a visible dad bod) get more female attention than the self proclaimed "hot guys" just because i know what i am doing, and have a strong body language.
Well the issue is that, like you said looks do matter, and there are guys like myself who aren't very good looking to begin with.
What you're not understanding is that because we didn't get good genes the only thing that we can do is work on ourselves and focus on what we can control such as lifting, dieting, clothes, grooming, etc.
You may be attractive and don't need to work on your body but not all of us are that lucky.
I've learned my lesson from trying to be myself and not care what others think but I quickly realized that it doesn't work. At some point you need to put work into yourself if you want others to value you at all. I'm still working on myself and going to the gym weekly and looking into my personal issues to fix so that one day I'll be able to start meeting people and go on a date one day.
The thing is that some of us can only focus on what we can control, we don't have looks so understand that we are limited in what we have to work with when it comes to being attractive.
[–]TheXXL 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I guess you got that one wrong, i am by no means a model, far from it. And Looks are more than genetics.
Sure, i agree with you, what i pointed out was the fact that i don't lift, i groom, i dress well enough even though i could do way more, and i overall look normal.
That is funny, where did i say that i don't have to work on my body? I just choose not to give a shit. I have a big belly, so what? I don't have hair anymore since my genes are shit, so what?
I've learned my lesson from trying to be myself and not care what others think but I quickly realized that it doesn't work. At some point you need to put work into yourself if you want others to value you at all.
So you quickly realized... this means you didn't try really. It takes you much time to find the right way to compensate for not being that shiny thing that all people want to posess looks wise. And i agree again about putting work in yourself, and i did, but you know what i put in the most work? my personality. This is what i am good at, being fun for people, being charismatic and trustworthy. To all this there comes a good portion of being dominant and fucking confident.
I'm still working on myself and going to the gym weekly and looking into my personal issues to fix so that one day I'll be able to start meeting people and go on a date one day.
It is great to have the will to go to the gym, i am sure if i had that kind of energy i would probably explode in terms of attractivity, but i don't have it, and i compensated with personality. Also, why are you waiting for some arbitrary time where you finally be able to date? You can date at any time, it is only your brain that is telling you that you need to wait. Trust me, if you are not a frankensteins monster looking guy, you can date as much as others.
Exactly. This is why i don't give a shit about being classicly attractive. I found my niche, and i polarize people. Most of them look at me with respect due to my stature, the way i walk and hold my body (you can learn that). They start to feel attracted to me when i start interacting with them. Not taking girls too serious, not taking myself too serious, being witty and intelligent and overall giving people a reason to stay close to me, since i am fun.
See? I use 90% behavior and only the few percent looks, since i am definitely not a beauty, which is the reason why online dating doesn't yield me any results, but in reality, women get fucking wet when i start gaming them.
I mean if you don't have to lift, watch your weight, groom yourself or do any of that stuff and still look normal then you don't really look bad at all to begin with.
That's what I mean some guys don't really have to do that stuff, those things are supplements for men who don't look decent to begin with and need extra help. That's why I personally focus on that.
Well since you said you have a belly and don't groom yourself and all that I assume you don't really have to do that. Some guys do need to do that to compensate for bad natural looks.
I think you misunderstood. It wasn't quick really. I spent 23 years of my life not ever being attractive to anyone so it took 23 years of my life to understand that I needed to change. To do something different and work on myself as a person if I ever wanted someone to care about me I needed to care about myself first.
23 of people not liking you isn't "quick", what I mean by quickly realized is that I'm 25 now so just two years ago it finally hit me to change my life for the better and seek the right path to making myself a better person.
So it was a very long time and just now am I beginning the road to recovery. It wasn't quick.
It is great to have the will to go to the gym, i am sure if i had that kind of energy i would probably explode in terms of attractivity, but i don't have it, and i compensated with personality.
Well as you said if you don't need to do those things then you shouldn't really. If you're still attractive despite putting work into your appearance then that's honestly great, at that point the gym/grooming are merely extra options.
Also, why are you waiting for some arbitrary time where you finally be able to date? You can date at any time, it is only your brain that is telling you that you need to wait.
Because I'm not mentally or physically prepared to compete with other men right now, I have some personal issues that I'm dealing with and I'm using this time to not only work on myself mentally but also going to the gym regularly and losing what's left of my excess weight. (about 20-22lbs so not much left to go)
As I am right now I'm not very presentable to people as a person let alone as a person they'd want to date so, just like everything else in life you have to be prepared or you'll set yourself up for failure imo.
Trust me, if you are not a frankensteins monster looking guy, you can date as much as others.
Well, that's the thing. If I sent you pictures of me I think you'd change your mind instantly lol. You'd understand why I've never been on a date or anything. I mentioned before that I don't really have good genetics and I'm being generous.
Well if you're already attractive as you say then you don't really have to do much at this point. Some men have it some men don't. If you're not attractive like me you need to not wallow in what you don't have and focus on what you can change/have control over such as your diet, lifting, wardrobe, grooming, financial status, etc.
Those are all things that are in my control and if I work on them they increase my quality of life and will make me a better person, leading to a better life and hopefully one day someone will be able to find me attractive among all the other men.
Again, when you're in my position. Options are limited and you work with what you got. That's what I'm doing and although it's not easy, I don't expect it to be.
But I try my best day in and day out.

Men's attraction to Women:

Women's attraction to Men:
80% Personality, 20% Looks - Looks do matter, about 20% which is a good amount. But the hottest guys in the bars still go home with nobody most nights. Even the best looking guy will have a very hard time finding someone if he's creepy, weird or even boring.
So yeah, looks do matter, but they do NOT matter as much as we think they do compared to women.

Looks matter to an extent. I've seen very good looking dudes doing poorly, and very ugly dudes killing it.
If someone is getting women then they must not be actually ugly to begin with.

lol y'all watched any RSD Tyler? You know, the fat, balding, ginger? I haven't. Check out a couple videos of the man and let me know if girls respond positively. Get back to me please.
[–]IAmVeryAttractive 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Tyler actually looks good, though. I wouldn't call him fat, and he still has a lot of hair. He dresses well too.
[–]JimBeamAndCoke2016 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
Whenever the looks debate surfaces, Tyler's name is usually mentioned as an example. This guy is not ugly and neither are any of the others that appear on the videos. Show me a guy in similar videos who's facial attractiveness is 2, 3 or 4, and is successful, and I'll accept that as a good example.
I want to see a guy with loose fitting clothes and unkempt hair try to land these girls. I'm pretty sure most hot girls would nope right out of there.

Looks so matter...but so do other things. There are definitely short, ugly dudes that get laid a lot. But they're well groomed and stay in shape and develop their personality and skills.
I think a lot of people who aren't naturally good looking kinda say "fuck it" and don't even try. You don't have to be Brad Pitt. You don't have to be chiseled and 6 foot 4. But you also shouldn't allow yourself to be a fat slob that sits on the couch and plays video games all day, either.
[–]SenorPuff -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Looks matter and can help your chances, that said, work to improve yourself as possible and run game like you're a sexy motherfucker even if you're not.
You either can or you can't change things in life. Work to improve what you can, accept what you can't as unchangable, and move on.
Don't think too hard. Run game.
[–]martianartisan -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Honestly, looks matter only to get a girl's attention and can make it easier to approach. But that's all. If you don't have inner game, you can make yourself unattractive instantly.
[–]TehGoobz -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
The whole idea of this is ridiculous. Looks can be changed. You can lose weight, change your hair, whiten your teeth, get a tan, change your clothes etc.
[–]JimBeamAndCoke2016 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
But not your facial genetics, which is what sparks the initial attraction.
[–]SenorPuff 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You actually can. It requires surgery and is generally a waste of time because attractiveness is a package thing and getting surgery to put steel plates in your face or break your jaw is pretty damn insecure unless you've been in a horrific accident.
Obviously surgery is an option but I meant a simple change like you can do to other aspects such as hair or clothes.
Even with surgery there's no guarantees that you'll end up looking as good as you hope.
[–]SenorPuff 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Sure. So stop worrying about it. Change what you can, accept yourself as you are, and run game.
