I have a somewhat interesting insight on this subject from a personal experience. A number of years ago, I was single (divorced) and got introduced to a very attractive hair stylist who was also single. She had a small child and the kids I had were old enough to look after themselves for the most part. We hit it off, and the physical part of the relationship was terrific. I learned that she had most generally dated/cohabitated with bad boy types. The father of her child was in prison. She had been through a number of abusive relationships. She always presented herself in a very clean, well groomed manner. Her apartment was disgusting, clothes, clutter, old pizza boxes and just dirty. It also became apparent that her financial standing was a slow motion trainwreck. She told me in several occasions. I never mentioned anything negative about any of this to her, because I didn't think we were serious yet. We would get together at my place and hers about equally. My apartment was fairly clean and my finances were in reasonable order. I feel I have to emphasize that neither of these were ever a topic of discussion, ever. I received a phone message from her that she needed to talk. She said that she didn't feel like she could ever meet my, "standards". She was looking for a LTR, and she didn't see one with me. It wasn't a pleasant experience, but I realized she was right. Our loosely bonded relationship didn't end there, we had occasional sleep overs, I eventually married and moved. I have thought about that relationship a great deal. Was it a self esteem issue with her? Was it that she really didn't want to feel obligated to be a certain way?
