This is one I've been thinking about for a while. Recently there's been an explosion of the term "weaponized incompetence" on social media, specifically with regards to men and housework/chores.
The typical meme/internet post is a girlfriend or wife exasperated with something that is "easy" that their male partner is "refusing" to do.
There are a lot of problems with this concept and especially how people have been applying it and talking about it.
My biggest problem with this phenomenon is the assumed superiority of women in relationships and how women typically behave (or at least, how the typical woman is being portrayed in these posts). What prompted me to make this post was seeing a meme on instagram of a girlfriend complaining about her boyfriend leaving a damp towel on their bed, leaving clothes outside their hamper, leaving cabinets open, leaving the shower curtain open, and putting toilet paper on top of the roller. There were thousands of comments of women saying to leave the boyfriend, calling men children or lazy, and otherwise engaging in lots of anti-male discussion.
My confusion arises from the fact that the way the girlfriend does things... is just assumed to be superior? The only act out of that entire list that I find even remotely objectionable is the damp towel, because it won't dry that way. But leaving cabinets open or clothes on the floor? Does that hurt anybody? What is the actual reason why leaving the toilet paper on the shelf is "bad"?
This sort of extends into my belief that the rampant criticism of messines in general doesn't make sense, but it's especially mystifying for that criticism to be weaponized (haha) against men for... not caring?
I leave cabinets open every once in a while purely because I don't care. It doesn't matter, nobody gets hurt, and my partner doesn't complain. I ALWAYS leave the shower curtain open, just out of habit. It would be a major red flag imo if my partner started insulting me or belittling me for something that matters so little. I don't see why not caring about having some shirts outside the hamper is such a massive deal and it's honestly concerning that so many people think that's an offense worthy of breaking up over.
A lot of the ladies in the comments seemed to justify their anger by saying "we are forced to clean it up" or "men do this because they know women will pick up after them". This sounds like the exact type of manipulative behavior that my parents used to use on me to get me to do things I didn't care to do ("if you don't put your glass of water that you're not even done with yet away then I will have to"). My partner leaves clothes on the floor constantly, because they don't care. Sometimes I pick them up, sometimes I don't, but I definitely don't claim that I'm for some reason compelled to do it and my partner is a bad person for "making" me pick them up. They'll get picked up when the laundry gets done, whichever one of us does it.
Divorcing this concept of it's gendered aspect makes it much more clear that it's ridiculous. Imagine roommates, one tidy and one messy. Is the messy one the one obligated to conform to the tidy one? Why? Is it not the messy rommate's room just as much as it is the tidy rommate's? I understand that for a lot of people the knee-jerk reaction is to side with the tidy person, but I don't understand why the person with arbitrary standards which happen to be higher is automatically entitled to the other person's effort. There's never any actual reason offered other than "it bothers me personally, so you HAVE to accomodate me".
Someone isn't morally inferior because clothes on the floor doesn't bother them, and the tidier person shouldn't guilt-trip the messy person into conforming to their standards by acting as though they're compelled to pick up after the other person when in reality it's their own entirely personal and arbitrary preferences that they're trying to meet. It's like a football player calling a bookworm lazy; it might be true in some sense of the word I suppose, but it's also rude and rather ridiculous.
This also can be switched back on women incredibly easily; why do some of them leave their hair products and dryers all over the counter? Or their makeup? Why have so many women I met not organized their fridges? Why do women I know leave acoustic guitars outside of their cases and let the body get thrashed by temperature and humidity changes? My aunt used to leave half of her room on the kitchen table 24/7 but would yell at me for leaving the room and still having a cup on the coffee table. All of these things are absurd and specific and I feel that it's totally unfair to criticize women for not living up to my personal priorities. I'm not an end-all, be-all judge of what is and isn't acceptable regarding arbitrary personal preferences, and neither are the women making these posts.
There are so many more elements to this as well. Men are still the majority of workers in relationships, a lot of them (definitely me personally) simply don't have the energy to care about something like putting toilet paper on the roller after getting home from working all day. With this comes the second form of assumed superiority (or perhaps superior isn't the right word, but I can't find a more suitable one) of housework in general. When men do things like the above, they're "weaponizing incompetence", but when women don't work and allow their husbands to work every day and reap the benefits they're just... totally fine? I don't understand why that acceptance doesn't go both ways.
And let's not even get started on how some women weaponize their incompetence/percieved vulnerability to get what they want. That's a huge factor as to why men were dying in the coal mines while women weren't. Hell, my partner was once told by their family to just stop on the side of the road and pretend to be broke down if they have car trouble, since they're afab some guy would certainly stop and fix the problem for free if they thought there was a woman in jeopardy. I personally can't count the number of times women in my family have manipulated me into doing manual labor that wasn't my responsibility whatsoever by pulling the "you're a strong young man" card and acting like any kind of work whatsoever would make them wither away. I'm convinced that I'm stricken with back and knee pain for life from all the yardwork I've done for my aunts.
I'm personally the more organized person in my relationship. I want to keep my room color-coded, wireless, and clean from corner to corner. My partner suffers from bouts of executive dysfunction and as a result is very messy. It astonishes me that my partner being messy is somehow a bigger red flag than me (hypothetically) lording over my partner, insulting them, calling them lazy, and insulting their parentage for not having the exact same priorities that I have or conforming to my standards. They are half of this relationship, and our room is as much theirs as it is mine. I'm not allowed to get upset with them for having a different standard of organization than I do (or even something more abstract, like not remembering to shut a curtain).
What are your guys' thoughts on this?
(I'm aware that all my examples are anecdotal; if it wasn't transparent, I'm more interested in an open discussion of men's experiences regarding this phenomenon and some differing opinions than a rigorous and peer-reviewed debate)
