I've always had trouble understanding the idea that partner preferences change over time. While I try my best to listen to different perspectives, I just can't wrap my head around this one.

At the end of the day, I can only compare to myself and I can honestly say, my preferences have never changed since I was 16 years old. I have a pretty broad preference range for height, but it hasn't changed. I wouldn't have dated a girl under five feet then and I wouldn't now. I had a preference for intelligence then and I still do today. I found 'party girls' unappealing back then and still do today. I have a preference for women with a healthy weight and, guess what, I did back then as well.

So, it's difficult for me to understand people who say that their preferences have changed over time. It just doesn't make sense to me and, tbh, I don't really believe it. I think what's actually changed is the person's priorities. While a man may prefer a healthy woman, as he's gotten older his priority has changed from getting laid to having a family and therefore he overlooks her weight because having a family is his priority. Same for a woman who got with type X in her youth but now goes for type Y.

Furthermore, to someone who claims their new preferences are genuine, how could a potential partner feel secure with that when your preferences can change so much? Younger you would have been just as certain of your preferences then as you are certain of your preferences now. Ten years from now, what's to stop your preferences from changing again?

Tldr; partner preferences don't change, but priorities do

Edit to add: The preferences I'm talking about are either appearance based or personality based. Things like where they live, whether they shave their pubes or if the sex is good are not the type of preferences I'm talking about.

Second edit: Thanks for all the great responses so far. I see now that I should have been clearer that when I say 'preferences' I don't mean passive 'I like brown hair but half the women I've dated have not had brown hair". I mean more like deal breakers. For example "When I was younger I absolutely would not date a woman with tattoos. But as I've gotten older, I'm now very attracted to women with tatoos." Or, "I used to only date men who were very smart, but now I really like guys who watch sportsball all weekend."
