women cant rape men because women cant force a mans penis to erect unless he wants it. i dont believe this whole..'men cant control their erections' that is ridiculous. men have not gotten boners when they have been with their girlfriends, so do you really think that if a man were in a scary rape like situation, he would be able to get his penis hard against his will?? unfortunately for women, we just have a hole, so theres nothing we can do about it. if a woman tried to rape a man, she would have to drug him first, and knock him out. and if he is knocked out, how will she get his penis hard? of course, women can put objects in a mans anus, but i think most female on male rape is from older females and younger males. the ratio of women raping boys/men is 1:100000000 rapes of men on women. the only part of this 'men can stop rape' comment i agree with is the fact that men are constantly taught from birth that the more sex they have, the more manly they are. they are trained to view women as nothing but objects of sexual desire. until women stop dressing in ways that arouse men, and men learn to not be turned on by boobs and ass, this whole rape problem will go away.

but how does a mans penis get erect without him making it erect? sex without consent IS rape, i completely agree, but men can consent by being aroused. otherwise, if he didnt want to have sex, his penis would not have been hard. how is it that men cant get erect with their girlfriends/wives when they want to? then this means that every time a penis is touched, it will get hard. plenty of men have told me they havae not gotten boners from being in a strip club and having the naked women rubbing all over them, so how can he be erect if incapacitated? and yes, men ARE taught women are objects of sexual desire. its in every porn/tv show/movie/music/ads online, in public, etc. yes, it is healthy for men and women to have sexual desires and relations with whomever they mutually choose, but MOST mens sexual desires are misguided and wrong.

ok so exactly my point. if men cant get aroused for emotional/physical reasons, do you really think that if he were in a scary rape situation his penis would get hard?? i would definitely argue that most men are taught unhealthy/misguided sexual desires. thats why things like rape porn exist, and why women are dehumanised in porn/tv/ads/music/on the internet/etc. i think you feel differently about it because you have come to this realisation by yourself. however, most men arent that smart, so they do objectify women and have unhealthy sexual desires.

youre right..it is..and im sorry. this is a very emotional topic. what i meant to say, was that i feel like most men arent aware of their harmful views of women because its been so engrained in them for so long.

"Take self-defense" and "Carry a weapon" do not get at the cause of rape. I do not think "Men can stop rape" does either, but if we want to stop rape, we can't make it the victims' (men or women) responsibility. We must must must do something to change the behavior of the rapists (men or women).

I want to stress that I don't like the posters either. I'm not going to try to defend them.
I don't know what the psychology of the rapist is like. Maybe there are 100 reasons people rape, maybe there are 3. It really doesn't matter. The important point is that, whatever the reason, responsibility for the action lies with the rapist.
We do have obligations to protect others. That is what morality is about. This "Every person for themself" mentality is the wrong one to have if you're going to be an activist.

I honestly do not see where you are going with this. What action are you identifying as careless? What I was trying to get across is that, as long as the rapist is acting of their own free will, they are solely morally responsible for the rape.
This is different from causal responsibility: My selling a car to somebody makes me (partly) causally responsible for any subsequent hit-and-runs they commit. I caused the driver to possess a car. I played a crucial role in the causal chain leading to the hit-and-run. However, in normal cases we don't want to say that I did a bad thing by selling the car, that I am somehow morally responsible for the hit-and-run.
I would say the same is the case for many rapes. Though survivors may be causally responsible for their rapes by being careless, I assert that they are not morally responsible. I admit that this requires argument in either direction, but here's a preliminary argument: When people are morally responsible for a bad event, we are in a position to reprimand them and say their actions were unethical. We would be unwarranted in saying that a rape survivor did something unethical or immoral by being careless in the way described.
This is relevant to what I have been saying because when we do activist work, we should look at who is morally responsible for the bads that we are trying to correct, not causally. This is the reason that we do not arrest gun shop owners for the murders committed with guns they sold.

If we are social activists (not police), our goal is to stop the morally responsible agent from performing the action, not to attack the weakest link in the causal chain.
That is to say, as activists, we want to stop what's bad and leave what's neutral. This means getting the morally responsible agent not to perform the action.

This is fine as a short-term thing, as long as the message is delivered appropriately. Apparently, it usually isn't. Perhaps it ought to be qualified much more heavily and explained that this is a temporary fix. Again, I don't think "Men can stop rape" is the solution either.
Anyway, if we want to make the world a better place (and isn't that what activism is about?), we cannot be satisfied with "Take a self-defense class". What's best is for people not to have to learn self-defense in the first place.
So, tell people to take self-defense (as long as it doesn't devolve into victim-blaming), but don't stop there.

I don't think anybody is so optimistic as to say "The last rape will occur in XXXX". As it is now, there are a horrific number of rapes, so we have to do something to decrease the number. I think that you're right. "Short-term" was the wrong word. The important thing is that it doesn't get at causes of rape. To compare: It's great to have an evacuation plan, but it's really much better if the power plant doesn't melt down in the first place.
I agree with pretty much everything you've said here about a program for education. I want to add, though, that the current way the "Take self-defense" message is delivered isn't right; in most cases, it does amount to victim-blaming in the same way "Well they should have carried pepper spray" does. "This wouldn't have happened if you learned self-defense" is not the right message, and as you said this can't be the only thing we do.
To reiterate, we should tell people to take self-defense, as long as we do it right. Historically, it hasn't been done right. Either way (as you've pointed out), we need something more than that.

If somebody has sex with a person that has not given consent, it is rape. We should not be teaching people "If your partner says no, it is rape", but "If your partner does not say yes, it is rape".
Also, have you looked at the studies?
All of these scenarios (most importantly number 2) describe rape. From a secondary source:
[+]SkyrimNewb [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link
"If your partner does not say yes, it is rape"
Do you not see how ridiculous this is?
[+]topoi [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
The way I see it, we have a right to personal autonomy. This is what makes it impermissible for people to harm us, for doctors to perform unwanted and unnecessary operations, for governments to wrongfully imprisoning their citizens, and many many other things.
We can temporarily waive this right by performing a speech-act, consenting. This is what makes it permissible for a doctor to perform an operation or for people to practice BDSM. Though people normally aren't allowed to cut you open with a scalpel or choke and hit you, when you grant them permission, it's ok.
Such is the same for sex. People normally aren't allowed to have sex with you. When you grant them permission (by consenting), it becomes acceptable. If consent is not morally required for sex not to be rape, why is consent required for surgery not to be assault?
In short, no, I do not see how ridiculous this is. Honestly, it seems like a very modest principle. Could you explain why saying yes is not required?
