The beauty standards are very strict, every single little thing has to be perfect. It is common for highschool girls to get double eyelid surgery as a graduation gift. But of course if you do get plastic surgery and its too obvious, you will also be criticized for that as well (the drama my id style is gangnam beauty goes into this, also true beauty a bit).

South korea is ranked one of the worst countries to be a woman in the workforce among "developed" (dont like this term but you get what I mean). Likewise, the wage gap is the highest there out of developed countries as well. Women in the workplace are expected to put up with blatant sexual harassment in work settings and in work-social settings (team dinners).

Sneaking photos and videos of women and girls is a huge problem. Big enough that if you buy a phone in South korea, you cannot turn the shutter sound off on your camera. Men will regularly hide cameras in women's bathroom stalls.

And the antifeminist spirit is soooo high in South korea. I cant remember who but another idol had to publish an apology for having a phone case that said girl power on it. They even hate men who are considered feminists too. RM from bts is on antifeminist blacklisting sites because he has recommended feminist books. One of the books he recommends ( and also was recommended on fds) is "kim jiyoung, born 1982". It's quite eyeopening but still only covers a fraction of the misogyny women face in SK.

Women in S.K are sleeping with, marrying, procreating, and dating men less than ever. If I remember correctly more than (or just under) 1/2 of men ages 20-39 are single. Men are pissed and like American men are taking up anti-feminist idealism because of course that's the reason they don't want them. It has nothing to do with the toilet cams, the sexism, abuse, and ill treatment of women overall. I have dived deep but I am 100 percent sure like American men they lack basic sex skills. I bet Korean women are getting trash sex, trash men, and trash work conditions.

Korean scrotes are on another level. Much strenght to Korean women because with the absolute state of men over there they need it.

EDIT: please, PLEASE if you live outside Korea and know women fans of kpop and kdrama try to make them understand that their idolized version of korean men is a curated product fabricated by an industry that caters to female fans and does NOT represent the reality of the average Korean man. I'm reading more and more abput super young women going to Korea to "find a man" and they have NO IDEA of what they are getting into.

I'm disappointed but not surprised. The first time I heard about south Korean feminist movement was around 2018, with the rise of the escape the corset movement. I learned that most of the rethoric of their movement is aligned with radical feminism.

Here in the west, however, we have the palatable libfem, sex pozy ""feminism"", where so called feminists bamboozle themselves into performing femininity in all levels and claim it to be empowering.

On the other hand, it seems like the mainstream feminism in south Korea is much more radical than western feminism. Korean women have been getting over the most common pitfalls of modern feminist for a LONG TIME.

So of course men would be freaking out, because they can't gaslight feminists, and they also don't have the benefits that western men have when it comes to liberal feminism.

I always thought that, if feminism isn't making men angry, it's being done wrong. So, cheers to these fierce ladies, they are definitely making a change. I just hope they are safe.

When I saw Korean it told me everything I needed to know. It's an extremely traditional society, even from Korean dramas you can tell those women live in an old-fashioned sexist hell. They're being sold a lie of waiting for a perfect Korean husband while in reality they get abused into domestic servitude, and pressured into looking like a prepubescent teenage girl all their life.

the men know they need to keep the women in fear so they make an example of hyosung. they are only doing this because they know feminism and the 4b movement is rapidly gaining traction, less women in south korea are marrying men and creating families. less women are becoming obedient housewives that the men need, the men know that women are focusing on themselves and their careers

no matter where a man stands on womens rights, he ultimately has everything to gain from participating in these anti-feminists protests either passively or actively. he keeps quiet, the women around him trust him but the other men's actions will favour his needs. he starts being loud, the women around him know not to trust him but he will gain more male peers with that mindset

the fact that shes an ex-kpop idol also adds another angle. the men are silent about the abuse of women in that industry, they loved her when she was dancing and singing. now they hate her because shes questioning the misogyny the men love and now they suddenly hate her showing skin and only now should the 'Ministry Of Gender Equality And Family' be taken down. its all transactional, these men are a danger but they will not get what they want. women are standing up for their rights

If it was actually controversial and unpopular to say what she said, you can guarantee her label wouldn’t have let her say it. These labels are not feminist in the least. They promote starvation diet bodies, forcing such bodies onto women, and these idols are often fodder for sick men to jerk off to.

If there’s one thing we can take comfort in, it’s that the incels in Korea haven’t taken over yet if she was able to say that without immediately being fired after.
