Happy International Women’s Day

Let us celebrate the women in our lives! Let us remember all the good they do for us. Without women we wouldn't be here. Can we just express appreciation for that this one day?

Any comment trying to derail will get removed.

Edit: I know this is strictly spoken against rule 1, but surely we can make an exception this once. And if you think not, then feel free to discuss other issues in other posts. If we can't even celebrate the positive that women do in our lives, then we are a sad bunch.

I have a wonderful mother who, along with my grandmother, mostly raised me. She is actually the reason I have always been at least somewhat aware of men’s issues since she and my grandmother took a great deal of effort to read and learn about them when they knew they would be raising two boys almost alone.

I dont see the point in gender days. Just seems to encourage segregation to me. They were literally conceived by conservatives who were very hardcore into gender essentialism, and very rigid gender roles, yet we keep them for some reason -_-

if it's to bring attention to inequalities, then 1. men's day needs to be celebrated/acknowledged equally, or neither should. 2. Why the heck have 2 separate days to evaluate inequalities?? seems to just be to stroke peoples egos for having a day to celebrate something they identify with. A better perspective to evaluate gender inequalities would be from just having a 'gender inequality day'

Edit: It seems I assumed, and misrepresented the origin, and the representation of "gender days". Depending on where you set the line of adoption, there practically is no International Men's day. As for international women's day? It may not have been conservatives, but maybe just sexists, or maybe even egalitarians back then who conceived of it. Clara Zetkin and Theresa Malkiel seem to have been some key figures, and while I do consider modern feminism, and all popular patriarchy theory subscribing feminism to be either a hate group, a rebranding of hyper conservativism, or both, I do not know what the women's movement was back then for these women (at the very least, seems kind of stupid to see people face different but comparably severe types of oppression, want a day to complain about it, yet only ask for International Women's Day)

Happy international women’s day. I’m so very grateful for my wonderful mum, who raised me with my Pops to strive to be a decent person and to care about others and to do the right thing.

I’m grateful for my amazing sister, who has always been there to support, love and lift me up.

I’m grateful for my brilliant niece, who is funny, intelligent and generous, and who I’m so proud of. She’s just got a scholarship to a prestigious boarding college and has her heart set on becoming a forensic coroner, which is no easy task.

And most of all, I’m grateful for my best friend and the love of my life, who inspires me every day. She’s survived people who were supposed to love her treating her terribly, isn’t fully able bodied and has been ill since she was a teenager. A lesser person would be bitter and spiteful, but she’s warm, kind, loving and always in my corner and I’m a better person for having her in my life.

Let’s not be like other people, and even the UN, and try to make this day about our cause. We’re all human and deserve recognition and respect.

My partner, who is currently dragging herself out of bed at 7 A.M. on her off day and the heaviest day of her cycle to take me to work since my car exploded, is the absolute light of my life and as cheesy as it is I would not be half the person I am without her.

She also got me into vegetables, which needed to happen. Badly.

I'm grateful for my mom who is an amazing woman who did so much for her community. Sadly she suffers from Alzheimer's which is a debilitating disease, but she has most of her family around her.

On a lighter note, I did write "Happy International Women's Day" on the board in my classroom and announced that "In honor of women, I am going to play metal female songs." That class doesn't mind that I play metal sometimes so it was all good.

I actually don't give a shit. But yes I'm grateful for all the Women in my life. Not because they're women but because they loved me and in most cases the people who have loved me more than themselves have been Women. I guess God created men and women so there is always someone who can prioritize you (sorry being a bit theological) . But yeah I also don't like the fetishization of every normal thing a woman does on days like these

I would like to applaud especially the brave and generous women who carry children for those who can't, like myself.

They show immense generosity using their biological privilege for those who don't have it. My life has been changed for ever by the arrival of a tiny new life, and the woman who made that happen will forever be the object of my unlimited gratitude.

Surrogacy is not slavery as some nutjobs would say, it is women being heroes in the way they can, conducting battles for others in the labour bed rather than in the battlefield. Showing they too can use their superior physical abilities in self sacrifice.

I also would like to point out that surrogacy can be exploitative under the wrong conditions, and like with all potentially harmful things, it should thus be adequately regulated, to protect all people involved.
