1) Who says abuse in nunneries is rare? It wasn't in some of the orphanages they ran, that's for sure.

2) Nuns aren't female priests- they're female monks. They don't just interact with altar boys every week.

There have been documented cases of nun abuse. However, as with all cases of female pedophilia, it’s less likely to be reported.

It’s often considered “normal” for women to touch each other. I remember my mom’s friends casually seeing me naked when I was a young girl. If I had any sort of medical problem, it was not considered strange for my mom and her female friends to take my clothes off and examine me or even touch me. I never thought of it as weird until I started thinking about how I’d like to raise my own children to have bodily autonomy and privacy.

I think female-on-female sexual abuse is considered less noteworthy for the same reasons that a woman having sex with another woman is considered “not cheating” by many. Female sexuality is simply seen as less threatening/immoral than male sexuality.

Society often only considers something “rape” if a penis is going into a vagina. No one sees a woman’s body as a potential threat, but men are walking around with a potential threat between their legs 24/7.

Women don’t have that appendage and are therefore seen as less malevolent. Female-on-female sexual violence is so much harder for a victim to explain. We grow up being taught to watch out for strange men…we might not even realize that it was the women who harmed us.

I don’t think women are less likely to be sexual predators. I do think female-on-female sexual abuse is less likely to be viewed as abuse.

Never assume that a lack of reported cases = rarity of occurrence.

There are still plenty of nuns who are abusers, but more physical punishment not sexual.

However, women are treated very differently in the Catholic church than men. Men are seen as an ultimate authority in the church, and there is less support for questioning that authority (the authority of a priest or a bishop for example). People in places of power are more likely to abuse that power and less likely to be questioned or held accountable when they do so.

If nuns had more power than priests and bishops in the church you would likely see a higher percentage of nuns in the church committing sexual abuse against parishioners/children, but not necessarily a huge amount.

I have never believed that priests sodomizing children is a result of them not handling celibacy well. Those priests were always pedos and either thought joining the clergy would suppress their urges but ultimately they cracked anyways, or they saw it as an opportunity to get away with it.

The vast majority of celibate men don’t rape either because they know it’s wrong and think it’s gross.

Nuns are just as capable of abuse, but from general hearsay (i.e. friends and family in Catholic schools going back generations) its localized to physical and emotional abuse.

I do believe women handle celibacy better; whatever pent up sexual energy is there is probably expressed by slapping kids, hitting them with things, or very close 'friendships' with their sisters.

Men's pent sexual up energy is a destructive force that needs a victim for release. Men also seem to have a harder time forging special 'male friendships' to alleviate that urge. When they turn gay by circumstance (i.e. prison, clergy, etc.) its almost always in a subjugated, top/bottom sort of way.

As much as I love taking credit for women where it’s due, nuns have been plenty abusive. Just much less likely to be direct sexual abuse. There are many bodies of children buried around where boarding schools for indigenous children once were located. Not to mention all the corporal punishment. Fundamentalists are much more likely to be all kinds of fucked up, gender irrelevant.

We weren't designed to handle isolation or celibacy. I believe both could lead to abuse. I don't know a nun but from what I have read they also were involved in some abuse, keeping I quiet is just as bad. ( as someone who has had their hand slapped with a ruler for using their left hand when I was little. Can only imagine what brought that on. By the way I am only 40 years old. Bet those ladies did more than slap hands.)

First nun and priests, are already an extreme minority. So as a sample size, aren’t a reasonable standard. To extrapolate out from.

In terms of isolation and celibacy, at the extremes, I’ve only ever heard of men. Monks the example that comes to mind. We don’t hear too much about women monks as much. Though they may be the majority. I don’t know too much, but base my opinion on that.

Not a nun here, but a 25F virgin who is a voluntary celibate, due to several reasons. I believe it varies from one to another. I know women who absolutely can't be alone, and also others who have high sex drives. I also know a lot of women who like to be alone and celibate. So it varies among people.
