I once read an article about safety issues in a parking garage. The whole article was about women not feeling safe anymore. Both victims were male and the author was also male.

I'd say the primary difference between men and women is that men understand and accept that self-defense is a personal responsibility. Society is not going to be there to save you when someone jumps out of the dark at you. Just because men accept this doesn't mean we magically feel safe. Hell most men I know are VERY threat aware when we're walking alone at night. It just means we don't see feeling unsafe as some societal problem, but rather the nature of walking alone in an isolated area at night. You SHOULD feel unsafe, because you ARE.

Most women I know will admit to not feeling safe when walking around at night, but almost none of them exercise to increase physical strength, own a gun, or take self-defense classes. Their solution is simply to avoid the situation whenever possible (which we all know only works until it doesn't).

I have always rolled my eyes at this ridiculousness.

When I was 21-22 I worked a very labor intensive job and was built like an ox. I had more practical strength than practically anyone who was not on amphetamines or steroids.

I still wouldn't have dreamed of walking alone in an isolated area without a formidable weapon, and even with a weapon I knew better.

Empower potential victims to defend themselves. Maintain strict and harsh punishments for violent criminals.

The reason this myth exists is men don’t want to admit or show fear as women will ‘get the ick’ and other men will mock them.

Furthermore, yes I do feel safe as a man walking around alone... the same way a woman feels safe and oblivious for a while... until I actually fucking think about it and realize I'm not safe at all. The only thing I'm safe from is probably being attacked by a woman.

I used to live in the ghetto, it’s definitely not safe to walk alone at night. My experiences there are the whole reason I take self defense classes and carry a gun.

I just looked up some quick statistics on google: 41% of men own a firearm compared to 20% of women in the US. If women are so afraid then why are men twice as likely to be the ones carrying a gun? I had some trouble finding statistics about self defense courses, but I have trained at multiple places and in my personal experience they are mostly sausage fests with 1 or 2 women at most. If women were so afraid to walk alone, then why aren’t they doing anything about it? You would think they would try to be prepared for all of the so called dangers they face.

Maybe they aren’t doing anything about it because they expect men to put themselves in danger to swoop in and save them. In the same ghetto I mentioned before, the same place where I was robbed at gun point and had drunk dudes try to fight me for looking at them: I remember a woman yelling once that her boyfriend hit her. Must have been 10 dudes that came running over to chase the boyfriend down and beat the shit out of him, no evidence for it just the word of this woman. I have also seen another woman repeatedly hit her boyfriend in the face while he just stood there with no reaction while people just kept walking by like it wasn’t happening. And women are the ones in danger? gtf outta here with that nonsense lol

Their argument often is "well yes men are victims, but the agressor is also usually a man, so that's on you".

These people don't see unique individuals, they only see the gender of each person involved, and if you're a man well you deserve it because some men are violent, so your entire gender has to pay for that.

The "myth" that women don't "feel" (important word, we're talking emotional states there, not objective levels of danger) less safe walking at night might not exactly be a myth.

But the only two workable solutions I can find is provide evidence that yeah, these women's perceptions of risk are greatly exaggerated, or emboldening chemicals. One's been tried and would probably be more effective if well-respected academics weren't peddling that lie, and the other is... Well, I have very good reasons why I think chemicals like amphetamines and the likes, which have been proven to reduce fears, would be a cure much worse than the disease. My reasons start with side effects, then move on to ODs, and end with how people on drugs can act reckless, aggressive, or both.

If you want women to "feel" safe, these are, AFAICT, your only two options: stop peddling propaganda and lies to women that exaggerates the actual level of risk they face, or start peddling drugs to women.

One thing they never mention, is why it's usually a man who is the person looking to rob from you.

If you end up in a situation where theft is your family's or household's only option to get money for food or whatever.

Would you send the wife or girlfriend to go do it?

Of course not.

I know that not all situations are like this, but they do exist a lot more than one might think.

If women weren't feeling safe at night, women wouldn't be voting for policies that welcome anonymous illegals coming from Venezuela trespassing through US-Mexico border into sanctuary cities. This proves that women do feel safe at night and they don't find anonymous and unvetted men dangerous even if they were released from Venezuelan prisons.

Yeah, a weapon trumps pretty much any measure of fitness or agility. Some 5'2" obese jackass with a gun will be able to rob a UFC fighter ten times out of ten.

With that said, that all assumes the criminal is willing to use the gun and take his armed robbery charge up to homicide. And that's sort of the difference. Purse snatching might get you a year in jail. Armed robbery is several years in jail. Homicide gets you at least several decades in jail. What risk is the criminal willing to take to steal somebody's wallet/purse? And if they aren't willing to take the risk then women are the easier victim.

I am 6”3 and I would say more muscular than most and have trained mma for 10+ years. When I walk around the more dodgy part of my area at night I’m still on high alert I’ve been punched in the face enough to not get overly confident and switch off.

THIS. I may overreact but I'm terrified of walking the streets alone after 7pm even if it's not dark yet, especially certain streets. I either "fake" wearing headphones (I put them on but don't listen to anything so I can be aware of my surroundings), or fake being on the phone / send fake audio messages. I know if people want to assault me they won't be deterred too much by these things but I've noticed people are less likely to approach me this way (drug addicts, people with bad intentions asking for things etc). Whenever I see women say they can't go out cause they're scared I'm confused because... aren't we all?? You can't live in fear though. You have to go out and take your chances, be cautious at best, but if you avoid everything you fear you would not be able to do anything at all. It's just victim mentality...

May I offer the inversion of this take? I go on solo night walks all the time. I'm a pretty big guy (large enough to appear intimidating to someone trying to target me) so I've never really worried too much. I live in an area with about average crime levels, not super dangerous but not especially safe either. I bump into other people on my night walks and a surprising amount of solo night-walkers are women. The majority are male, but once I started paying attention I noticed about 1/4 of people walking alone at night just for the hell of it are women. Knowing this, I find it odd that so many people are convinced that women are universally terrified to be out on their own after dark at all. It's actually pretty common.

I carry a knife (automatic and liner lock and the former is still illegal in some states), a keychain-sizes container of pepper spray or bear spray if the area is bad, and a soft panel ballistic shirt either in a backpack or on me if it’s not unbearably hot. I’m also over 5’10 and roughly 195 with minimal hand to hand experience. Some idiot or disingenuous writer for New York Times or Slate would say this qualifies me for the patriarchy. In reality, it marginally decreases my chances of being a vic. I don’t leave for nearly anything after 10 pm and I wouldn’t even walk down an alley with a Cane Corso.

Most of the women I know aren’t foolish and take precautions, but I can’t speak for everyone else…

yeah, it's an odd point they like to bring up sometimes--- even if you're a big athletic dude that knows how to fight; all that goes out the window when the criminals in question are likely to have a firearm and the element of surprise. I live a mile and a half from my job. It’s a concert venue in West Hollywood. I love it cos I like to walk to work. It used to be pleasant and quiet when I’d walk home at 1 or 2 am… til after lockdown. Since then, crime has been noticeably up since before lockdown with many people getting bashed and robbed after midnight. So, walking home with my backpack filled with my MacBook plus my phone and watch, I have given up on walking and now bike to and fro. Still, even on my bike, I have to be super vigilant about everything around me. I miss my walks

I think it's not so much as seeing themselves as victims of only violent crimes, but more likely to be sexualy assaulted along with violent assault. Men are generally physically stronger than women. My husband is 5'6", I'm 3" shorter, yet he can overpower me and put me in a hold where I can't move.

I've been a victim of mild sexual assault, however my mom was brutally raped and beaten before and barely escaped with her life. She was lucky, that guy was a serial rapist and murderer of his victims.

I'm not dismissing the fact that men are equally unsafe against criminals who mean to do them harm. But usually men are targets for robbery. The motivation for the crime/assault are generally different for men and women victims.

I never heard anyone telling that ONLY women don’t feel safe for walking alone in the night. Ofcourse men are also scared of walking alone in a dark alley. We might be stabbed and mugged.

But there is a huge difference in how we feel. We get attacked by criminals. But when we talk to women, we come to know that many of them got attacked not by regular criminals but normal men who decide to grab the opportunity. Talk to any good looking woman. All of them will be having an experience of a stalker, who might be someone whom they seem prior.

I know a person who was working with a job visa in a country(a sophiscated tech job) who was caught on camera for groping a woman thinking he won’t be caught. But they eventually caught him and deported him.

I(a man) am also scared of walking alone at night in a place which is devoid of people, but to be honest I won’t be thinking whether a man will come behind me and grab my ass. I might be scared for my watch, wallet, mobile and passport
