That's so sad! Out of curiosity can you point to some influencers or others that you thinks promotes this view? I've just never heard of it. My husband is the one who pushed for 5 dogs and my dad has always lived pets. Not saying you're wrong I'd just like to know where you got the message that men can't like pets.

Showing affection openly and treating your pets like beloved kids is 100% seen as feminine and "pussified" under the patriarchy. I'm sorry you live in it too. I am sure your cats are adorable and are happy you love them.

I'm a large straight guy who grew up in Texas. As a child, I loved music, nature, animals and reading, and still do to this day. I lost my father when I was young so obviously various other older men in my orbit took it upon themselves to "show me how being a man works" or whatever. Every time I refused to go on a hunting trip I was called weak and gay, each instance of me deciding to sit and read instead of roughhousing with the other boys it was because I'm so feminine, crap like that. Toxic masculinity defined. So I get you, just keep your chin up and keep loving your cats as much as you want. Fuck that noise, focus on the joy.

Fuck the patriarchy.

As a woman I absolutely agree, and not just for me but for my sons and husband.

The patriarchy hurts everyone who deviates from the rigid box it imposes, and the more you deviate the more it hurts you.

Tear it down. The toxic masculinity bill crap needs to go so my kids can grow up feeling loved and supported with all of their many feelings and not need to feel like they are alone or can’t talk about certain things, or need to perform a role in society other than being the best them possible on a good day.

All men do, as do women.

But it seems like your stepdad and his dad are the worst offenders of your life and affection to animals. If you live with them, I don’t recommend the following:

not showing affection to kids or animals is crazy, but that that would explain you.
yeah, my cat is awesome! Look at their little paws and how fluffy they are!
Did you know petting animals increases your serotonin and makes you happier - you should try it sometime.

I know it doesn't make a difference because being picked on is never gonna not hurt, but anyone who gives you shit for loving kitties is literally the last person you should give a second of your attention to.

Of course, part of their power is insisting that "everyone" agrees with them. I would wager, though, that 90% of people who would claim to agree with them also love cats but are too afraid to admit it, and imagine what a sad life that is, depriving yourself of purrs and pets just because you're afraid other people will pick on you?

If it makes you feel better, as a woman, I have always adored men who love pets. One of the things I love so much about my fiancé is that he is an absolute magnet for our two dogs, and when his kitty was alive, he was a very loving owner to her.

Also, my dad is a blue-collar guy – an autoworker who can build or make just about anything you could think of. Nobody would ever meet him and think he's a weak or feminine man. He LOVES animals, especially cats. My mom told me one of the few times she ever saw him cry was when they found an injured baby bird that they tried to nurse back to health. It died, and I guess Dad had a really hard time with that.

The problem is not “the patriarchy” — I don’t like that term as usually it disguises an attack on masculinity and manhood as a whole. What you are describing is better termed toxic masculinity and hardness of heart.

While I do believe we as men should love and embrace our masculinity and how it differs from femininity (which is beautiful and amazing in its own way), a true man goes to war for love of his nation, protects and provides for love of his family, leads and disciplines his children/dog in a loving way, and loves and appreciates his cat fully and without reserve. To kill emotion is to kill one’s soul and therefore any “masculine” behaviors you embody without a soul or emotion are for the most part a performance.
