People seem to get very confused with how the word “narcissism” is used. It existed long before the DSM introduced the concept of “personality disorders”. Saying someone is narcissistic is not the same as saying someone has NPD.

“Peter Pan Syndrome” isn’t even in the DSM as a diagnosis.

I don’t live in USA, but I think it’s unlikely the presence of narcissistic behaviour and Peter Pan like behaviour is driven by mental disorders, rather it’s the product of capitalism and social media. Yes, it’s definitely affecting dating in many countries.

I don’t buy it.

People are reconsidering their expectations of life by aged benchmarks in line with a variety of socioeconomic factors.

The idea of aging out of things like hobbies, fashion and life experiences has changed owing to improved health and nutrition, but also where American people in their teens, 20s, 30s and 40s expect to be by certain ages. Americans are less likely to be home owners and parents by 25 (and in general, compared to Gen X, Boomers and the Silent Generation), more likely to be educated, have access to contraception and are likely to live and feel good for longer.

Feeling less pressured to conform to unrealistic expectations from a society not geared to support the aspirations of previous generations will impact how Americans perceive themselves, their timelines and their expectations for the future.

I wouldn’t for a second suggest that Peter Pan syndrome is either common or a nonchalant term to apply to 99.9% of the population of any country.

I can't speak to it on a societal level. But I happily started adulthood and would be skeptical of any man who didn't.

Yes.

This sub constantly highlights how some men refuse to grow up, take responsibility, take accountability, and be a capable adult.

We see it in the comments and threads about how women are more educated than ever.

We see it in the comments complaining about men not having enough casual sex.

We see it in the comments complaining about women not having sex with men they aren't interested in.

We see it in comments saying that women should date broke or unemployed men.

Some men, for whatever reason, prefer to have a Wendy or a mom to cater to them vs an equal adult who might disagree or challenge them.

People without degrees in psychology and psychiatry are very quick to arm chair diagnose people with catchy buzz phrases like “narcissist” or “traumatized” or “gaslight”.

It’s best to avoid listening to non-professionals using those kinds of terminology. It’ll save you a lot of grief.

It’s ok to just call someone self serving, self centered, or selfish. Those are not dirty words.
