I agree that people do this when they’re noncommittal.

But I also think some people are afraid of having “the relationship talk” because they’re worried the other person isn’t on the same page as them.

If you talk about it, you might have to hear them say it clearly that they aren’t interested in.

So they don’t say anything because it means they can keep the fantasy alive, without the potential loss of a scary confrontation.

But no, it’s not healthy and is obvs a poor strategy for a relationship

Clearly there was a miscommunication with a guy or multiple guys that lead to the situation you keep bringing up. No amount of complaining on Reddit is going to solve anything. You want these things made clear in the future? Start the conversation yourself and tell the guy that unless there's plans to be exclusive then you're going to keep seeing other people. Clearly putting the onus on the other person to have this conversation about exclusivity isn't working, so take some personal responsibility and do it yourself. Literally the only way you can actively prevent any further miscommunication in the future.

I agree with you. I think you should be able to clearly express what relationship orientation you want. In the same way that if you ask someone what their sexual orientation is, they should be able to clearly explain/label it and if they couldn’t, that would be strange. If someone cannot tell you what relationship orientation they are seeking that means they are either confused or dishonest and both those types aren’t good to partner with.

It can’t be cheating bc there’s no established boundary being crossed. I think men in particular struggle with this concept the most for two reasons. One, asking for exclusivity is a vulnerable position where they risk rejection so they rely on implications to do the heavy lifting. Two, all things equal in terms of attractiveness, a woman has more options for suitors than the average man. A man who can make a woman believe she’s in the wrong for exploring her options can effectively cull his competition.

It’s funny. My bestfriend had a toxic ex that started as a situationship. After about 6 months of dating or talking or whatever you call it, she found out he was still DMing girls on IG. His response? “We’re not official.” So she decides to go on dates & post her date night outfits on her story. He got pissed that she would “do him dirty like that” bc it’s not like he was actually meeting up with other women. He was just DMing those girls. He finally asked for exclusivity out of jealousy. They did not last.

If you want someone, make it clear or be prepared for them to explore their options.

You actually shouldn't communicate that at all. But you should be ready to let go and not be too hurt. I'll explain.

You don't want your partner to be exclusive only because there's some rule in place. You want them to want to be exclusive. Your partner should be disgusted by dicks other than the one that's already in the relationship. If that's not the case, then she's not the one. If she's looking for loopholes to sleep with others, then why do you want her? If the only thing stopping them is the rule - is that really what you want? It's not a court and who cares about all this lawyer type stuff? Akshually technically we weren't exclusive so I did nothing wrong... GTFO.
