Hello, ladies!

Long story short: My boyfriend a few months ago stated he never wanted to get legally married ever. His reasoning is that "divorce is expensive for men, and they get stripped of everything". Am I overreacting for being pissed that he doesn't want a traditional, legal marriage?

Long story mildly long: I have been with my boyfriend for about 3 1/2 years now. We are still very young (21) and in school, so marriage is still a while a way if it were to happen. The only problem is, I don't know if it will ever happen. About 2 years ago, we talked about marriage as couples do and we were excited that this was probably going to work out for the long haul for us, but about a month ago the story seemed to change.

I can't exactly remember how the conversation came up, but we somehow got on the topic of marriage and he stated that he didn't want to get married through the state because "the government doesn't need to be involved in our relationship" and "men's lives are ruined by divorce". I can almost understand the first one because heck the government and all that jazz, but the second one kills me.

It just makes me so upset because I 100% get where he's coming from; the system is almost entirely against men in cases of child custody and divorce. However, the way he presented it made me feel untrustworthy and gross and like divorce is just inevitable. Furthermore, he already knows I support men's rights just as much as all the other rights and I'm more than capable of taking care of myself. Also, [for a number of reasons that aren't his fault, but I feel like this is important] I'm the only one in the relationship with a job at the moment, and I'm graduating from college a semester early while he still has three years remaining, so what could I possibly steal from him in the case of divorce???

Everything in our relationship is absolutely amazing, but I just don't understand why marriage is entirely off the table all of a sudden. He has a poor home life and he's been through a lot in the past year, so my best guess is stress, but I'm so scared he's never going to change his mind.
