I think it would be a lot more toxic if he didn't care about her pleasure at all. An extreme example would be female genital mutilation to substantially reduce her pleasure. It might be somewhat self-serving, but I think a woman aiming to give a man an orgasm is equally as much an ego boost. I don't think any woman, feminist or otherwise is going to complain if a guy gives her an orgasm.

[–]MattcwuJust sticking up for the oppressed and voiceless women1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

An extreme example would be female genital mutilation to substantially reduce her pleasure.

This is not toxic masculinity, because it does not harm men. That was made very clear to me by many people in this thread.

[–]Nodoxxintoxin2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I will argue that it does hurt men. Years of resistance and starfish from a woman incapable of enjoying what is done to her in exchange for the mistaken belief that she will never cheat? As opposed to a wife willingly engaging in sex?

She will probably never cheat because she doesn’t want to be stoned to death. Meanwhile the husband could probably have just as much fun with a flesh light.

[–]trettles1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Toxic masculinity is also something that is harmful/violent towards women.

[–]MattcwuJust sticking up for the oppressed and voiceless women0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I disagree. I think You're using the wrong definition. Which definition are you using?

[–]trettles0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hegemonic_masculinity#Toxic_masculinity

It encompasses more than just being harmful to men

[–]MattcwuJust sticking up for the oppressed and voiceless women1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I see, I was using definition #2 and you were using definition #1. Scholars are still arguing about which definition it is. So I guess we're both right until that argument is finished.

Connell argues that a salient feature of hegemonic masculinity is the use of "toxic" practices such as physical violence, which may serve to reinforce men's dominance over women in Western societies.[3] Other scholars have used the term toxic masculinity to refer to stereotypically masculine gender roles that restrict the kinds of emotions allowable for boys and men to express, including social expectations that men seek to be dominant (the "alpha male") and limit their emotional range primarily to expressions of anger.[69]

No (sane) woman that decides to have sex with a man is then going to yell angrily about how he made her orgasm.

Why is anyone surprised that making a partner climax is partially a confirmation that you are a good partner, and partially about making the other person feel good?

I was always proud that my ex bfs were satisfied, it was irrefutable proof that I was attentive and skilled.

[–]the_calibre_cat2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Why is anyone surprised that making a partner climax is partially a confirmation that you are a good partner, and partially about making the other person feel good?

I don't know. Maybe ask Vice, or their employee who wrote this article. They're the ones putting the stupid out there, among many other actors.

[–]BleuBird180 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That was more of a rhetorical question, but I appreciate the answer. I've never read vice before (that I know of), I was just going off the title of the post.

If I get around to reading it, I may come back and add more.

[–]MattcwuJust sticking up for the oppressed and voiceless women1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well, no one knows what the patriarchy is, so your pussy could definitely fit into that category.

[–]BleuBird181 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Mine just wants to chitter at everything on the other side of the window and take 14 hour naps between meals.

Patriarchy is just men running shit and making things awful for men and women across the US and the majority of the world for the sake of power and profit. It's the thing that put women on pedestals (if you buy into universal cunt worship, which twerps seem to agree is a thing), and also decided men are cannon fodder.

[–]passepar2t1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm glad you put in that "sane" bit because I knew a girl that got mad at guys that came close to making her come and she aggressively suppressed her own orgasms whenever she had sex. I don't even pretend to understand it. Thankfully, she was only a platonic acquaintance.

[–]Mr_White119811Hugh Mungus1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Maybe ask the feminists as they claim that all sex is rape.

Its one way or another.

Either you like getting raped or you dont.

[–]BleuBird180 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, there are feminists just as horrible and stupid as twerps.

Normal humans do not think like that, and the people that ARE that messed up are easy to spot....so just avoid them in real life.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No (sane) woman that decides to have sex with a man is then going to yell angrily about how he made her orgasm.

Your error is to assume anyone there was sane. They are feminists.

Why is anyone surprised that making a partner climax is partially a confirmation that you are a good partner, and partially about making the other person feel good?

Less "being surprised" and more "actively and desperately looking for something to complain about". And a modern third wave feminist who is in a relationship with a super-understanding super-progressive super-woke soyboy will have a hard time engaging in victim posturing, so she has to scrutinize his behavior in the most asinine manner.

Back in the day feminists complained about men being insensitive and selfish. Now that they got their partners who are constantly putting her pleasure and her priorities above their own, they also don't like it because the guys want to be acknowledged for it, and harp about bullshit concepts like "emotional labor".

And I predict: should they manage to shame these guys into compliance so they only silently serve them without expecting any kind of reward, acknowledgment or reciprocity for it, but only exist to slave away for her, they'd find another thing to complain about.

Some people are only alive because it's illegal to shoot them.

[–]BleuBird181 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No one I have met in the real world believes this kind of shit, or is a man hating feminist. In fact, I have never met anyone that hates men.

I have met assholes that think they are better then women.

But really, everyone around me, and everyone through my extended network are just.... People. With different quirks, and struggles. But no man hating Feminazis or women hating Chad's, or cucked and miserable feminist groveling males.

Twerps and the psycho feminists are twins of each other.

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq.13 points14 points15 points 7 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

That’s retarded, no.

[–]exit_sandmanstill not the MGTOW sandman FFS3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

From a postmodern feminist perspective, it's only consistent.

They're constantly looking for excuses to feel oppressed, objectified, victimized etc. - so when they have a super-woke partner who constantly puts her needs and her pleasure above his, they have to make up bullshit reasons so they can turn this against him... which, in this case, is him expecting to be acknowledged for his feat, and that's labeled "emotional labor".

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq.2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I'm a feminist, I don't see things that way at all. I have a bunch of feminist friends - we talk about supporting each other advancing work-wise, we talk about celebrating diversity in opportunities and achievement, etc. We barely even talk about men. It's none of this victim bullshit.

[–]exit_sandmanstill not the MGTOW sandman FFS2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

That's why I added "postmodern". But the problem is: these neurotic personalities with persecution complexes, who are constantly scanning their environments for reasons to feel oppressed, are the vanguard of your movement who are also treated as such.

That's why Anita Sarkeesian was praised as a authority on gaming issues by the MSM, Jessica Valenti has a column in the Guardian, and Amanda Marcotte was part of John Edwards' PR team. And from those harpies the way to "men wanting to be pat on the head for making you come is patriarchal oppression" is very short.

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq.1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Idk, nobody in my little world pays any attention to shit like that.

If anything, we've had some discussions regarding MeToo but I am sure you can imagine that shit is ubiquitous in my industry, as in actual quid pro quo or assault.

[–]exit_sandmanstill not the MGTOW sandman FFS0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Idk, nobody in my little world pays any attention to shit like that.

That's the problem, maybe you should (at least if you value feminists not being perceived as misandrists supreme by default).

If you allow the harpies to speak for you (and they do), don't be surprised if they govern the image other folks have of your group.

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq.0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It’s not my decision to tell people what they should or should not believe or say. They don’t speak for me just because you personally only look at that type of thing and apparently want to ignore or downplay the type of stuff I am telling you my group is interested in.

I can’t stop someone from promoting their beliefs anymore than I can stop you from only focusing on the parts that support whatever anti feminist beliefs you have silly.

[–]exit_sandmanstill not the MGTOW sandman FFS0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They don’t speak for me just because you personally only look at that type of thing

That's the fun part: I don't have to actively do that - they managed to monopolize the spotlight them well (they do so as well in my country, I just picked three anglosphere feminists because you'd be more familiar with those).

And even the "reasonable feminists" who enjoy a certain degree of prominence (no, I am not talking about unicorn feminists like CHSommers) seem to be pretty comfortable with them being treated as representative of their group - at least I almost never see them being called out on their bullshit by other members of their ingroup.

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq.0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Eh somehow I manage not to see all that shit just being a normal person not seeking it out. 99% of the outrage clickbait feminist shit I see gets posted here by anti feminists and it’s stuff I’ve never even heard of before. So idk what I’m doing differently....

[–]exit_sandmanstill not the MGTOW sandman FFS0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As I said, you don't have to seek it out, 3rd wave feminists get a lot of opportunities to spout their ill-informed opinions passing them as facts; so it's quite easy to be exposed to them.

Unless of course you avoid liberal newspapers. Which by now I would say is recommendable.

[–]MattcwuJust sticking up for the oppressed and voiceless women0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Which part?

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq.4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

The concept conveyed by your title, I did not read your link. I mean I suppose if some dude is like forcing her when she doesn’t want it but generally that’s just dumb. Dudes like getting girls off because they like giving pleasure too how crazy.

[–]jax006Wants to bang ~20% of PPD chicks0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think hes talking more about the pressure put on men to make women orgasm as being topically masculine.

Idk, I suppose I can see where hes going with it. It's not a terribly large leap from the classic toxic masculinity trope of "alpha chad bangs thousands of hotties, and you should too" although the contextual specifics of OPs example might not hold up.

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq.1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ok maybe

[–]MattcwuJust sticking up for the oppressed and voiceless women0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Oh, the link is a summary from Vice of this study which found "These results suggest that women’s orgasms do function—at least in part—as a masculinity achievement for men."

[–]Salty-Bastardjust an excitable boy6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Now, I may just be a simple country lawyer your honor so to clarify:

If a man feels good when his woman is having an orgasm it should be viewed as toxic masculinity?

[–]darla105 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

yes counselor because men should NEVER ever feel like they've achieved anything. That would make women feel insecure.

[–]Salty-Bastardjust an excitable boy3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah, that explains the shame and guilt i feel when she has multiple orgasms, its nigh on traumatic...

[–]exit_sandmanstill not the MGTOW sandman FFS1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Since complaining about men who take pride in making women orgasm apparently really is a thing among feminists, I dare to say that the reasons are:

  • these women actively looking for reasons to complain about men
  • these women considering the idea that women may owe something to men (even if it's only acknowleding his efforts) completely and utterly abhorrent

[–]darla100 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s the whole inferiority complex (vis a vis men) many women have deep down. They can’t submit, even to acknowledgment of pleasure.

[–]trettles2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe, but it's not toxic. Most would argue that it's positive masculinity.

[–]sublimemongrelBecky, Esq.1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don’t think that makes it toxic what is the harm in a dude feeling dude accomplishment at that

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I need to change it but got nothing. At the time a terper here told me I sound like a femcentric single father because I didn't approve of telling young sons that women are <series of expletives> to prepare them for dating life. It made me laugh pretty hard.

[–]exit_sandmanstill not the MGTOW sandman FFS1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

ah okay, now it makes sense.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it tickles me because I'm pretty sure I dated/married before the manosphere became a thing; it just so happens that I did the "wahmen" thing very according to their timeline and preferences quite accidentally. My brand of solipsism aligns with that experience naturally, but it's 'femcentric single father' 😂😂😂

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

[–]BiggerDthanYouBluetopia-1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]Salty-Bastardjust an excitable boy1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're being very pedantic and your gotcha is in bad faith D. For someone who rails people about nuance you seem to have misplaced yours.

"this effect was exacerbated for men with high masculine gender role stress."

This gynocentric bullshit article is right up your alley, they should just re-name it "how to train your man-puppy cuz its all about you girl".

[–]CainPrice3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Liberal women have this crazy idea that if you focus on getting her off (i.e., focus on -you- getting her off), then you're making her orgasm about you. It becomes an achievement of yours, an expectation, and a lot of pressure for her to get off, all to feed your ego. You're taking all of the fun and importance of her orgasm away in some kind of hypermasculine power grab.

It's silly. Making your date feel good is just part of being a good date. If you want a second date, she should have a good time. I guess if you don't want a second date, you can just get in, finish fast, and go home. But that seems kind of rude. At least give her a finger while you're going at it.

I was on a first date and literally went down on a girl for like 45 minutes, and she kept stopping me every five minutes or so and telling me to stop fixating on getting her off and making it about myself. I hadn't said a word about it. My mouth was busy. We were just fooling around and after the underwear came off, I got to work. She just interpreted the downright friendly and polite act of going down on her, which I like to do to be a good date, as some kind of masculinity power grab. Completely random.

After the last time she stopped me, I kissed her to shut her up and fingered her really good, one inside, one out, and she came in like 60 seconds, we fucked for half an hour, and afterward, she said that orgasms don't usually happen for her. Especially not on first dates. I told her she's been hooking up with the wrong guys. We hooked up for awhile after that, obviously. And I bragged every time after that, and she didn't mind.

I think that's what the study was trying to claim. That this is the current norm.

"women’s orgasms do function—at least in part—as a masculinity achievement for men."

Ok but how is that aspect of masculinity toxic? What harms does it cause men? Or women, even?

I think you can make a stronger argument it helps women hang around and women hanging around benefits a man's life.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm toxic as fuck

[–]reluctantly_red2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

the driving force is not unadulterated benevolence, but instead, a desire to prove how masculine they are. It's sort of like bragging to yourself that you're great in bed.

Not seeing how this is a bad thing.

[–]MattcwuJust sticking up for the oppressed and voiceless women0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In my opinion, it's not. Unabridged masculinity can lead to positive things. I disagree with the viewpoints of Vice.

No

[–]MattcwuJust sticking up for the oppressed and voiceless women0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Are you saying "no toxic masculinity is not bad" or
"no, we should not get rid of toxic masculinity"

[–]hammerhauntsbread pill1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Advocates of removing toxic masculinity are either MRAs who will say giving orgasms isn't toxic masculinity or feminists who will be huge hypocrites and go to chad for orgasms on the side and thus not facilitate removing it. Either way, stupid

[–]BiggerDthanYouBluetopia0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

feminists who will be huge hypocrites and go to chad for orgasms on the side and thus not facilitate removing it

How do TRPers always manage to go from "toxic masculinity is bad" to "masculinity is bad"?

If I complain about rainy days this doesn't mean that I think that all days are rainy nor that I hate all days.

Am I an hypocrite if I complain about rainy days, but then go hiking on a sunny day?

[–]hammerhauntsbread pill0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

If something is toxic masculinity, it's toxic masculinity, and women liking it won't change it.

[–]BiggerDthanYouBluetopia0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

But no one has ever said that attractive and masculine men are toxic.

So please tell me: how is it hypocritical to complain about toxic masculinity and to sleep with masculine men?

And then please tell me why it's hypocritical if I complain about rainy days, but like sunny days.

...he says the authors failed to mention that women's sexual pleasure isn't as clear-cut as it is with men, and that many women struggle to communicate the ways men can give them pleasure—he says the bigger takeaway for women is that "it matters to a lot of male partners if you do or don't have an orgasm."

He continues: "You need to educate him about your body, your sexual pleasure, and help him to realize that your way of arriving at an orgasm could be very different from how his last partner orgasmed, or from how he has orgasms. Help him to realize the goal is pleasure, and if orgasm is part of that, great. But pleasure comes first."

Sounds like most of the article agrees with a lot of PPD

Damn...and all this time I thought sex was about both giving and receiving pleasure, and a woman's orgasms were just a wonderful part of the journey for both parties. Oh well! Good thing this article came out because I now know better - making a woman orgasm is toxic! From now on the only one orgasming is me, and next time some girl says she's about to I'm immediately removing any and all body parts/tossing her off me for her own good. I'm sure she'll appreciate it #heforshe

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

When I was younger I used to focus on getting the woman off as some kind of achievement. I realise they didn't like it as much as I thought. There's pressure on them to actually have multiple orgasms for a start. Then I realised it was actually kinda selfish in that I wasn't letting them feel the way I felt about being able to give . On top of that, while there is a place for marathon sex sessions it's certainly not every time you have sex. I also think it can get pretty boring for them having a guy just out to please you, sex should be active.

So in a way, I see what theyre saying. If you make it all about her, then you're taking away the pleasure she gets from pleasing you to validate yourself.

[–]TedescheMRA1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I see you point, but toxic masculinity (dum concept to begin with) is about behavior that men are pressured by society to engage in that is harmful to themselves and/or others. Vice is (stupidly) making the argument that men giving women orgasms is harmful, because they don’t “mean” it, but this is Vice. They would argue that a white couple adopting a black child is cultural appropriation.

Stop giving these lunatics this much thought. Let the feminists cite them and deal with the fallout of citing such shitty sources.

[–]TedescheMRA0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The point the article misses is that men giving women orgasms can stem both from a desire to please their partners and a desire to demonstrate masculine prowess.

For fuck’s sake, when a woman gives really good head and is proud of her skills, is she demonstrating toxic femininity? Is she only motivated by her sexual pride?

This shit is fucking ridiculous, and it’s coming from a bunch of hate mongers who have nothing better to do than try and come up with new ways men are bad and women are good.

I don’t see what about this is toxic.

I suppose if a man places all of his self worth in his sexual prowess, that could definitely have a negative effect on his state of mind. But just priding yourself on getting a chick off is not toxic.

Toxic masculinity means there is a negative effect on someone. I don’t see that here.

[–]Texastentialism#1 gimpgirl stan1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it can become toxic when a man is singularly focused on making her orgasm in a certain way or a certain timeframe or whatever, which is definitely a thing some guys do. Like "I'm not going to listen to what you want, I'm just going to jackhammer you and if you don't cum from the power of my almighty cock I'll take my bruised ego out on you." I've also had guys who were really invested in giving me MULTIPLE orgasms, which is difficult and frustrating for me and something I'd just rather not attempt, and they got butthurt about that. I think it becomes "toxic" when the focus on her orgasm is about what boosts his ego rather than what's fun and feels good for her.

But I don't think that's most guys, and I don't think wanting to give a woman an orgasm and taking pride in doing so is inherently toxic.

[–]MattcwuJust sticking up for the oppressed and voiceless women0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't agree with the opinions in this article, but some people did identify the behavior described in this article as undesirable. For example,

Being a man is toxic.

[–]TriadFamilyTimesEverything I know I learned from group sex0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Here's how you divide this one out.

If you are giving a woman an orgasm she does not want, that is toxic.

If you are giving a woman an orgasm she does want, it is not.

Therefore building your masculinity on consensual sexual exchanges where you do something for your partner they like and want you to do again is not toxic in any way.

However, building your masculinity on only one thing, no matter what that one thing is, is toxic, so diversify.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

[–]MattcwuJust sticking up for the oppressed and voiceless women0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

You used the word toxic is two different ways.

In the first usage, you used it to mean (bad, or an unethical thing to do)
In the second usage, you used it to mean (bad), but I don't know why it's bad to get really good at one thing?

Since we established that this article is describing masculinity, the definition of toxic is really the only point of contention. Could you define that word for me?

[–]TriadFamilyTimesEverything I know I learned from group sex-1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

No it's used the same way.

It's not bad to get good at one thing. It is bad to base your self image (your masculinity) on only one thing. I was pretty clear about that.

[–]MattcwuJust sticking up for the oppressed and voiceless women0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

[–]firewatchersdaughter0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The crux of the argument is that acting self interestedly is toxic, even if it’s good. Very few people act out of pure charity. People donate money because it makes them feel good. That doesn’t make them bad, and certainly not toxic (I really hate that word to be honest).

On a scale from most pure to least pure, I would rate motivation for doing good things something like this:

Pure Charity - doing what’s right, simply because it is right. Often this will be extremely unpleasant. Something like taking a bullet for a stranger. Ironically sociopaths have the greatest capacity to do things purely out of charity.

Wanting to make someone’s life better - the reward is feeling good.

Fear of punishment - basically serving out of duty. Sort of like paying taxes.

To make friends - you are really doing it to not be lonely

———— Below this line is “toxic” ———-

To increase your popularity/reputation - “take heed that ye do not your alms before men to be seen of them”.

For money - (televangelists are a good example of this)

In summary, as long as you aren’t making women orgasm so you can boast that you are a sex god, you are squarely above the toxic line.

If that's not toxic masculinity, I don't know what is.

Okay, so you don't know what toxic masculinity is. That's okay--it's a slippery term. It's when men do things that hurt themselves or others in order to prove or boost their masculinity. So it COULD be, if the woman isn't feeling it and doesn't want to come and the guy is being pushy and insistent about it, but just "doing a thing because it makes you feel masculine" absent any other context, is not toxic masculinity.

No one but an idiot thinks that someone feeling pleased and proud for getting their consensual partner off is "toxic" anything.

[–]MattcwuJust sticking up for the oppressed and voiceless women0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Thank you for giving the definition. That is helpful.

So, sometimes it is toxic and sometimes it is not toxic?

Is toxic in this case a synonym for bad?

So toxic masculinity is not as bad say, "toxic murder" or "toxic genocide"?

I think I get you. No one is arguing that the masculine traits: strength, courage, independence, violence, and assertiveness are bad. They are just needlessly adding the word masculinity to behavior that is already defined as bad?

[–]flamingoinghomeIs three lizards in trench coat1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

So, sometimes it is toxic and sometimes it is not toxic?

Yes. That's why you need the word "toxic" there. As in "berries" vs. "poisonous berries"--it's not that berries are INHERENTLY poisonous, but sometimes they are.

I think I get you. No one is arguing that the masculine traits: strength, courage, independence, violence, and assertiveness are bad. They are just needlessly adding the word masculinity to behavior that is already defined as bad?

Sort of--but I don't think it's "needless" in the same way I think you can talk about, like "abusive religion"--identifying the motive for a bad behavior/ idea can be important.

(I do think violence is almost always bad though--it's only okay if it's defending someone, or consensual violence like a boxing match)

That is a great example, thank you. Love (a good thing), becomes bad when it becomes smothering. Masculinity, (a good thing) becomes bad when it harms innocent people.

[–]BiggerDthanYouBluetopia-1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

In my personal opinion, "toxic masculinity" is normally used as a misleading manipulation to make men feel guilty for being masculine.

That's not how anyone has ever used it though. That's merely the strawman definition that the manosphere relies on due to their extremely poor reading comprehension, extreme black and white thinking and incapability of understanding any kind of nuance.

It's just like how "I hate rainy days" does not mean that all days are rainy nor that I hate all days, but for some reason there's not a single TeRP that is able to understand that it refers to days that are rainy.

[–]MattcwuJust sticking up for the oppressed and voiceless women0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Your strawman is inaccurate. I know that "I hate rainy days" only refers to days that are rainy.

[–]BiggerDthanYouBluetopia1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I know that "I hate rainy days" only refers to days that are rainy.

So if you are one of the few TeRPs that is able to understand that "rainy days" refers to days that are rainy, then why can't you apply the same to "toxic masculinity"?

Toxic masculinity is always used to differentiate between those kinds of masculinity that are harmful and those that aren't.

So either you aren't willing to have a honest discussion about it, or you are unable to understand any kind of nuance. Which is it? You admitted that you are able to understand that "rainy days" refers to days that are rainy, so why aren't you willing to argue about "toxic masculinity" as it is actually used instead of the strawman version?

[–]MattcwuJust sticking up for the oppressed and voiceless women0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I am willing to have an honest discussion. I disagree with your distinction. None of the masculine traits strength, courage, independence, violence, and assertiveness. are bad/toxic on their own.

[–]BiggerDthanYouBluetopia1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Still not how anyone is using it.

Shaming men for expressing feelings is toxic masculinity.

Having control over your feelings isn't.

Let me start this with the definition of masculinity.

Masculinity doesn't refer to traits of men. It refers to societal standards that are being pushed upon men.

Masculinity are the expectations that are being put upon men, but not the things that men do, because men can do things that are feminine or unmasculine. Men even do some unmasculine/feminine things naturally, like crying.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masculinity

Masculinity is a set of attributes, behaviors, and roles associated with boys and men. As a social construct, it is distinct from the definition of the male biological sex.

https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/masculinity

Qualities or attributes regarded as characteristic of men.

https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/masculinity

Habits and traits that society considers to be appropriate for a man.

Masculinity is a social construct that refers to all the societal norms that are being pushed upon men.

And in the same way "toxic masculinity" refers to those gender norms that are harmful to men.

When we talk about toxic masculinity we are talking about harmful standards, but not about harmful behavior.

fem magazine com/feminim-101-what-is-toxic-masculinity/

Toxic masculinity refers to society’s expectations of how a traditional male should behave. Ideas related to toxic masculinity have been normalized in society; comments like, “be a man,” “that’s girly,” and “man up” stem from this attitude.

It is important to underline that toxic masculinity relates to the cultural perspective given to masculinity, not the biological traits of the male gender.

Toxic masculinity exists throughout cultures, expressing itself in different manners. In Latinx culture, toxic masculinity comes in the form of Machismo. Machismo refers to the societal belief that males must adhere to traditionally masculine stereotypes and maintain dominance over women.

the odyssey online com/toxic-masculinity-hurts-boys

The stereotypical ideal of masculinity generally promotes the image of a man as being dominant, muscular, a protector, and able to control his emotions. None of these traits are necessarily bad, and I’m not trying to attack them, but they create a very narrow definition of what masculinity is.

The masculine man only likes certain kinds of music, dresses certain kinds of ways, likes sports, has short hair, etc. Early on in a boy’s life, that kind of masculinity becomes a strong force that begins to pressure the boy to conform to that set of narrowly defined behaviors.

If a boy cries frequently, for example, he is shamed as not acting toward the standards that life set for him at his conception; he is made to feel that he is less than a man, that he must change his behaviors, his way of thinking, even maybe his personality to that standard. This boy is shamed until he changes, until he stops crying and learns to "control" his emotions and to think more "logically."

If the boy changes, he’s rewarded through external gratification; he’s praised as someone who has grown up into more of a man. On the other hand, if the boy doesn’t change, he’s criticized, sometimes bullied and harassed and made to feel like he is worse than what he’s supposed to be. Effectively, the boy isn’t allowed to be himself. This is when things start becoming "toxic" and harmful.

I’ll never forget a family session in which a father berated his son for crying about not making the basketball team. “Get over it. Don’t be a sissy,” the father said.

The boy was clinically depressed. I tried to explain how corrosive it can be for boys to stuff their emotions. It didn’t go well. After all, the father said, I was biased as a female shrink.

A documentary released in 2015, The Mask You Live In (which you can now watch on Netflix), films boys from every kind of background who describe the way they suffer from our culture’s narrow definition of acceptable masculinity. A viewer can’t help but be impacted. Given the long-range effects of this public health crisis, everyone should see it.

What happens to this pent-up frustration when boys inevitably come up short in the manhood-code department? It can lead to depression, conduct disorders, isolation, problematic relationships and even violence.

Traditional notions of masculinity often categorise it as a weakness if a man were to acknowledge that he has a health problem, and that it is not ok to talk about it or take action.

For this reason, men are often leaving it until crisis point to seek assistance for their mental health issues and are more likely to engage in risky behaviours that may be harmful in the long run.

Even those men who might be suffering from mental illness are unlikely to seek out counseling because it is often stigmatized as “weak” for men to seek out help and admit vulnerability. Among those who do make it into an therapist’s office or mental health program, domestic abusers are notoriously resistant to treatment protocols.

Words have power, and terminology about masculinity can be dangerous. Overtime, hearing phrases like "be a man" or "real men don't cry" sinks into the subconscious. As CNN's Kelly Wallace explained, our culture doesn't do a good job of creating a safe space for boys to express their emotions without the fear of facing ridicule. Doing away with toxic sayings such as these remove the pressure from boys to hide feelings other than anger.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxic_masculinity

The concept of toxic masculinity is used in psychology to describe certain traditional male norms of behavior in the United States and Europe that are associated with harm to society and to men themselves. Such "toxic" masculine norms include the traits of dominance, devaluation of women, extreme self-reliance, and the suppression of emotions.

As you see every article about toxic masculinity is about societal standards that are harmful to men, but not about harmful things that men do.

It's seriously not an attack on men nor on masculinity as a whole.

Masculinity is a social construct that refers to all the societal norms that are being pushed upon men.

I disagree. You added "pushed upon" to your definition even that it is not present in our definitions. I think this social construct is also a description of the natural world.

It is important to underline that toxic masculinity relates to the cultural perspective given to masculinity, not the biological traits of the male gender.

I think that biology drives behavioral traits including behavioral traits that are different, on average, between men and women.

Effectively, the boy isn’t allowed to be himself.

I think that's a good thing. We should not just be ourselves from birth. We should be molded into adults who are able to successfully navigate the world. We don't learn that naturally, we learn that from societal pressures.

the image of a man as being dominant, muscular, a protector, and able to control his emotions. None of these traits are necessarily bad

I think these are good traits for any person.

Everything else that you pointed out, we agree on. We only disagree on the highlighted points. But, with those disagreements, we likely to come to 2 very different conclusions. From my point of view, you're trying to do good, but are actually doing harm to boys and young men. They would be happier if they learned the positive traits of being a protector, etc...

I think this social construct is also a description of the natural world.

What's natural about the idea that pink is unmasculine? There's nothing biological about this and it has been the other way around a hundred years ago.

What's natural about the idea that men should wear jeans, but not a dress? A dress would allow their balls to get more fresh cold air which would be less harmful than having their balls overheat in tight clothes.

What's natural about the idea that eating vegetables makes you a faggot? In Asia vegetables aren't associated with femininity and thus there's no gender difference in the amount of vegetables that they eat, but in the US men often stay away from them out of fear that they will lose their balls.

Men can naturally cry. Masculinity demands that they do not cry. Up until the Victorian times men were allowed to cry and there are lots of accounts of men from less-civilized cultures readily crying for barely any reason without any shame.

Men have to learn to hold back their tears in order to be masculine. So what's natural about that?

I think that biology drives behavioral traits including behavioral traits that are different, on average, between men and women.

But when we talk about toxic masculinity we aren't talking about sexually dimorphic behavioral traits.

We are talking about harmful societal standards.

I think that's a good thing. We should not just be ourselves from birth. We should be molded into adults who are able to successfully navigate the world. We don't learn that naturally, we learn that from societal pressures.

So being masculine isn't something that comes naturally to men, but something that they have to learn?

Would you say that some cultures have more harmful construction of masculinity that they teach men than other cultures?

the image of a man as being dominant, muscular, a protector, and able to control his emotions. None of these traits are necessarily bad

I think these are good traits for any person.

Maybe that's why the following sentence starts with "None of these things are necessarily bad" and ends with "and I’m not trying to attack them, but they create a very narrow definition of what masculinity is."

What you are saying is like "rainy days suck" - "OMG why are you attacking sunny days?".

Complaining about the bad parts is simply not the same as complaining about the good parts.

When people are attacking toxic masculinity they aren't saying that masculinity is toxic. They are solely attacking the harmful constructions of it.

For example if you want to teach your boy about the positive traits of being a protector you can teach it to him in a healthy and balanced way, or you could do it like "Real Men protect women with everything they've got and if you do not have the balls to sacrifice your life you are a faggot/pussy".

Toxic masculinity is directly tied to homophobia and misogyny, but you can teach boys to be masculine without such strict and fragile standards.

A better explanation from one of my sources earlier:

The term toxic masculinity is useful in discussions about gender and forms of masculinity because it delineates those aspects of hegemonic masculinity that are socially destructive, such as misogyny, homophobia, greed, and violent domination; and those that are culturally accepted and valued (Kupers, 2001). After all, there is nothing especially toxic in a man’s pride in his ability to win at sports, to maintain solidarity with a friend, to succeed at work, or to provide for his family. These positive pursuits are aspects of hegemonic masculinity, too, but they are hardly toxic.

"toxic masculinity" is simply not an attack on men or on masculinity. It's simply an attack on harmful forms of masculinity.

And to get back to the point of your thread:

Making your partner orgasm isn't toxic masculinity.

The societal idea that you are a pussy/faggot if you do not manage to make your partner orgasm is toxic masculinity. The idea that you are a faggot/pussy/weakling if you care about your partners orgasm is toxic masculinity.

Ok, I think we are on the same page about most of these things. All of things in your last comment are things we shroud not push on young men.

Although I think "pussy" when it's used to mean "a weak cowardly man" is closer to "pussycat" than "vagina". Pussycats are weak and cowardly. Vaginas are not cowardly. Men should not be weak and cowardly, but also pussy and faggot are not the best terms to express that.
I do think we sometimes should push boys and young men, even when they do not want to be pushed.

Finally, I think what men are lacking is not people telling them they are ok just the way they are. What they are lacking is people telling them that they need to improve. The emphasis is in the wrong place.
