Had a discussion yesterday with a user here who said:

contentment is very elusive when you are trying to balance career launch, a not so far away ticking biological clock and eagerness for romantic lockdown with a man who is likely not “ready” yet for that sort of commitment. contrary to what people say, it is a minority of women who will be truly happy (in love with) a guy who’s 14+ years older than her. But some of us get lucky. Even the second time around.

The career stress problem is a big issue. I’ll give you that.

It reminded me of this post I've saved and wanted to talk about for some time:

I often wonder if men ever realize the stark choices that some women face. Do I want to be a button-up career professional, and able to go toe to toe with any man? Do I want to be viewed as a sexual object, a woman that men are willing to pull out all the stops to seduce and treat as a w.o.m.a.n. Unfortunately, it is often a black and white choice. After slaying many corporate dragons, and proving that I could succeed, I wanted to explore that softer side, and not stay up all night, working on that perfect presentation, etc. Tonight, I had that unique chance to be out with a group of high-powered colleagues, and replay who, what, where of our corporate world. It was one of the evenings, when you realize how many hills you have climbed together.

I chose a few years ago, to tone down working late nights and weekends, and to focus on having some "fun", to have a sex life. Yes, it shouldn't be that stark of choice, but it is for many women that I know, it is. In any case, I made a conscious choice. Oh, and it is TOTALLY different for a woman mid-career, than it would be for a man in our same "position". In any case, tonight, I realized as two of my MM are quiet, what the fuck have I done, giving up my career, my time, my energy, to dedicate to being a sexual object, at the expense of my career.

Ugh....the stark choices I have had to make, tonight seem to have been the wrong choices. All I gave to these guys, trying to be desired, trying to be what they were looking for. Giving SOOOOOO much of myself. What silly decisions. I simply don't think the men that I have met will ever appreciate all that I gave, all that I tried to be for them. What I am left with....well not much.

What do I think the bottom line is? Well, I think for almost all men, it is a win/win. They get great sex. They get a woman who is willing to pull out the stops to be that sex kitten they desire. What do I think many women get, well win/lose. The guy gets the best of her, and she, she gets ghosted, as he is on to his next conquest. She probably also had to compromise her hard charging lifestyle, to make herself available to him. I know I did.

I think as a consequence of the male gender role being so fixed, men have an easier time balancing sexual gender roles with professional roles. Some of the lawyers here admitted that traditional feminine qualities disadvantages someone within their profession. This would inevitably force career women to wear many masks; one to the boardroom, one to the bedroom, and one to the nurture a baby for example. While men in the same position don't seem to require to have these split personalities.

Largely, I don't see many women finding their place of contentment with work-life and maybe the whole female gender has to find this out individually. But many single women I work with seem lost in finding a compatible mate and utterly tired of the b.s. of online dating. I see many having to make sacrifices to their career to live a work-life balance that makes them happy, and the ones that do put 100% of their efforts into their career are extremely competent and intelligent but miserable about their home lives. All the girls I know who are happy about their work-life balance are typically working comfortable jobs that don't necessarily pay well in trendy cities while their parents subsidize their rent. And that is not a jab at them and is fine, but I don't think it is a lasting nor sustainable solution. Some men I know have gone this route too.

I've also noticed a ton of bloops and ardent feminists here are passionately child-free which they see as a path for their personal contentment. It also would make sense because it makes their ideology more consistent with their actions.

Q4All: Is it such a stark choice for women? Can you be an authoritative woman while retaining your feminine beauty such that men "pull out all the stops to seduce?"

The user here ended with:

Women have to choose contentment/happiness, men have to choose commitment.

Q4All: Do the societal pressures on women to choose financial success over contentment/happiness make women less happier?

Q4All: Does the lack of pressure on male commitment to women ultimately make women less happier?
