Two reasons l

(1) according to feminists, there’s an oppression hierarchy. Blacks are on that scale so feminists don’t like to criticize.

(2) black men in general and especially in the hip hop community are impervious to feminism shaming. Blacks know that life’s tough for everyone.

They criticize rap music all the time. And the rebuttal is that the language in rap music is meant to reflect the harsh conditions in which the rappers grew up as opposed to their actual personal views on women.

I'm a feminist who loves rap music. Judging by the replies in this thread, it seems most of you aren't very familiar with the genre. First of all, it's a vast genre of music, and the most offensive and sexist rap songs are usually of the gangster rap variety. Gangster rap was most popular in the 90's and early 00's, and hasn't really been relevant for years.

The most popular and critically acclaimed rapper in the world right now, Kendrick Lamar, is quite progressive and has very little misogynistic content in his lyrics. There was a recent controversy about his song "Humble" because in the song he said he likes asses with stretch marks and has a preference for natural, un-Photoshopped women. IMO, that's pretty innocuous, and a far cry from "beating, raping and murdering" women (modern rappers really don't rap about that kind of stuff anymore, at least very few of them do). They don't even rap about gang-banging anymore!

Jay Z went from rapping (in the 90s) "99 problems but a bitch ain't one", and "Me, give my heart to a woman? Not for nothin', never happen; I'll be forever mackin!" to, in 2017, rapping about wanting to be a better husband and father and apologizing for being a womanizer and a sexist.

Now I admit I roll my eyes at the people who gasp in shock and horror over "bitches and hoes". They are extremely commonly used words in the rap music vernacular and much of the time they aren't even meant to be particularly insulting or degrading. Bitch is the female counterpart to n-gga ("Where my bitches at? Where my n-ggas at?"). Hoe can be insulting or it can just refer to a sexually attractive woman, depending on the context. Both words are thrown around very casually, and are even used as terms of endearment at times.

So hearing those words in a rap song doesn't carry nearly the same weight as (for instance) an angry white man shouting "You fucking bitch! You're a disgusting whore!!" because the intent is not the same.

So in short, yeah, rap definitely has a problem with misogyny, but the people who think it's a HUGE problem are out of touch and think rap hasn't changed since 1999. If I feel insulted or offended by a rap song (which does happen), I turn it off and listen to something else because there is such a vast selection to choose from. Also, there are plenty of pop, rock, and country songs that objectify women and contain offensive lyrics, but no one seems to care. I guess it feels more offensive when it's coming from a scary black rapper.

Anyways that's just my two cents. I am largely not offended by rap music at all.

Literally the entire Kanye/Taylor Swift drama circus, one of the biggest celebrity news stories of 2016, was Taylor trying to save face because the lyrics to Kanye's song "Famous" (which he told Taylor about before releasing the song, and which Taylor approved and thought were funny) were met with a firestorm of feminist criticism when the song was released.

Mainstream feminism is aligned with minorities, because minorities are disproportionately supportive of ~~degeneracy~~ progressivism, even if they aren't the main advocates. So it's of course taboo to criticize blacks, hispanics and muslims, even though they are much more patriarchal and misogynistic.

However, feminists who aren't so deeply tied together with mainstream progressivism probably have criticized rap music.

A lot of white people, especially white people who are of an age when they no longer have music inflicted on them on a near daily basis by their peers, just sort of edit rap music out of their awareness of day to day reality. One can't and probably shouldn't attempt to pay attention to everything and it is OK to just not bother with things that are aimed at a different demographic. We can't all be Iggy Azalea nor should we.

But I do hear there is some discussion of rap among black feminists and womanists.

Rappers are more difficult targets. Most of them in their lyrics portray hedonist and often criminal lifestyles, they don't care as much about feminist criticisms because it likely won't affect their reputations. In fact it might be the opposite sometimes. This is very much unlike say a CEO who would like to have a respectable public image.

Second is that they're cool and attractive to women. Pasty white nerds are much better targets because they're easy to hate by said women.

Now obviously, feminists do attack rap music. Rick Ross lost millions in sponsorship deals for some lyrics about date rape. You're seeing plenty of rappers in legal trouble now as more people are willing to speak out about sexual violence problems- Nelly is the latest one.

You've got to take into account your perception bias. You're on reddit, you're probably on subs like /r/TumblrInAction where manspreading is an easy way to mock feminists. Where people actually give a shit about 'shirtgate'

Judging by the comments, I think what your really asking why neo-feminists or college progressive feminists aren't attacking rap or hiphop culture.

The best answer is simply in recent years feminism is merging more together with racial social justice movements. The idea of "marginalized " people is taking more importance or getting more attention than just simply women's rights or civil rights.
