Nope. You're not obliged to give anyone any chances if you don't want to, and second chances are just one category of chance.

Trying to see how little effort he could get away with. You wanted more effort from him, so he left to try to teach you a lesson and make you demand less. If you let him back and get together seriously with him, maybe marry, your whole life will become this bullshit powerplay with him trying to give as little of a fuck as as possible. Throw him back in the dating pool to look for someone else... maybe he'll have learned the lesson and make efforts for them but you aren't the one who can benefit from him doing so, if you let him back it negates the lesson.

Obviously no one is required to do anything, people do make mistakes but a lot of the time people "coming back" is just them coming to reality. Oh shit I am not actually as good as I thought I was, better go back to that other lady/guy. Unfortunate, reality always wins and most people are so bad at patience and foresight.

Do you have to give men a 2nd chance? No. You can do whatever you want. Similarly, if you want to, then do what you want and don't blindly follow what someone on the internet said. Obviously, there are some exceptions where I believe you shouldn't ever take a person back.

No one is obligated to give second chances to anyone. But if you don't learn how to forgive your partners, your relationships will rarely last beyond a few months.

People make mistakes, and no one can read your mind. As a woman who has been married over 6 years, I sometimes make mistakes and so does my husband. Marriage is about communication, compromise, forgiveness, and change. I once heard someone say a good marriage will teach you more about yourself than your spouse. I found this to be true as my marriage has challenged me more than any other interaction in my life.

Dude you mention does sound very stalkerish and I would be wary of him, but if you're ever going to maintain a longterm relationship, you can't just drop someone the first time they do something you don't like.
