My narc ex "broke up" with me like five or six times over the course of our 1 year relationship. We were never broken up for more than like 30 minutes at a time.

Every now and then he would randomly sit down with me and do the whole "this isn't working out" shtick and I would go "ok!" as though a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders.

I suppose that wasn't the reaction he wanted, because as soon as I packed my things and made my way to the door, he always said "no wait!" and tried to convince and beg me to take him back.

My guess is he just wanted some narcissistic supply. He was probably expecting me to cry, beg, plead, etc. which would have made him feel desirable and boosted his ego. In general, he loved provoking me for his own personal amusement and to get attention. He was such an emotional sadist.

The relationship was so stressful that when he wanted to break up it felt like a relief. So instead, he got his ego boost from convincing me to forgive him and stay, which made him feel just sooo clever and in control again.

My dumb ass always took him back but not before extracting a bunch of conditions out of him such as buying me something expensive.

The last FwB I had (a year ago) told me when we started seeing each other, that he didn't consider me girlfriend material because I wasn't as hot as the Instagram models he claimed to have been dating before me. He also informed me that I had to do 3 things in order to keep his interest and not lose him: 1) Shave down there, 2) wear strings and 3) let him do anal. I refused all three, but I saw immediately what a PoS this guy was. I let this go on for a couple of months because I hadn't had sex for years and really just wanted some action, but I reminded him over and over again that FwB was perfectly fine with me.

In the beginning he was raving on and on how awesome it was that finally he had met a girl, who didn't want to lock him down and who was so chill about FwB, but he quickly let his covert narc self out and would get really worked up on the fact that I wasn't hopelessly in love with him.

He'd text paragraphs when and I'd just respond with "okay" because I didn't have the time or will to engage him. He tried negging me and I just shrugged. He'd ask me out last minute on effortless cheap "romantic" dinners (in his trashed flat) and when I'd tell him truthfully I already had other plans, he'd react passive aggressive "guess you don't care about me". I'd always remind him "dude, this is a FwB arrangement, you told me right away you don't want more and neither do I, remember?". He tried to love bomb me with (thoughtless) gifts, but since he was so enraged that this didn't work, he always excuded this absurd mixture of love bombing and anger that made it crystal clear to me what he was truly about.

I withdrew, was busy with friends or family most of the times he invited me and he got so pissed off every time. I reminded him that this was only a FwB arrangement and asked him if his feelings for me had changed because in that case I would have to let him go as I didn't want to lead him on. He'd insist that I still wasn't girlfriend material to him BUT "all the girls I was previously FwB with always wanted more, a relationship, a family and this made them so feminine and attractive ... you are so weird for being so cold, I wish you were more like other girls" (note he often also told me how great it was that I was NOT like other girls .... make up your mind, narc!). I'd ask him if he wanted these things, a relationship or a family because I was in no position to give any of that to him, so if he wanted that I would end it immediately and he told me that of course he didn't want that, but "it is nice to have the option in case my mind changes down the road"... lol stringing along women in case your mind changes down the road.

Shortly before we broke up, he went on work trip with a male colleague of his. They were supposed to train staff in an office branch in another country. He told me excitedly that the entire staff of this office abroad was female and asked me if I was worried. I didn't care, also I had lots of things going on with my family and my own job while he went on that trip so it barely even registered that he was gone. He'd effortlessly text me "Good morning" and "Good night" every day, but I barely responded. When he came back, he insisted coming over to my flat (obviously a bit annoyed that I wasn't running to welcome him back). So he came over, all cheery, and told me every boring detail about his lame work trip. Still cheerful he recounted how on the drive back home, his colleague got a phone call from his girlfriend and how this woman apparently had screamed and cried down the phone for like an hour because she was so jealous about the colleague being on this work trip to the all female office. I was a little shocked since that sounds pretty extreme (although this guy had surely exaggerated) and just said "Jeez, I'm sorry for your colleague and his girlfriend, it sounds like they are going through a difficult time in their relationship".

His cheerful mimic fell off his face right there and then and he looked at me annoyed and angry and said "No she is just a normal woman, who shows her man that she cares. I wish you'd be like that too. Show me that you care. But you are so ice cold."

I was like "Again, this a FwB arrangement by your own request. Also you'd really want a woman to cry and scream down the phone when you go on a work trip? Why would anyone want that? It sounds thoroughly unpleasant for both sides" He rolled his eyes "It's a normal thing women do when they care about a guy. They get a little bit crazy. But you aren't normal, I know that".

At this point I had enough and considering his unwashed dick was very mediocre and gave me UTI after UTI, I decided that this was the last time we'd meet.

That's narcs for you. They thrive on being able to reject you and know they have you by your emotional strings like a puppet master. They also really REALLY want to be given opportunities to call an emotional woman "crazy" and thus feel better about their own LoGiCal selves. It kills them when a woman doesn't give a shit.
