Back when I was in high tech there was a period of time where I would:

Get up at 5am.
Find a place to park near the BART train.
Ride BART into San Francisco. (45 minutes)
Go to the Gym.
Take shower.
Get to Work by 9am.
Work all Day.
BART to home by about 6pm.
Sleep by about 9pm.

Friday I'd go out and get hammered at the local bars. Take the 11pm BART train home.

You can do that when you are young.

Anyway... never had any troubles with the ladies.

IT is the growth industry. Since before the age of sticks and stones technology has been driving human achievement and will do so as long as the human race exists.
Computer scientists/engineers are the "high priests" of our time-- hacking is the new latin. = power.
What kind of power? The power to rake in 6 figures straight out of college for some grads (Stanford/Carnegie/MIT/etc. BS in CS/Software Engineering, lookin at you!)
What else does it afford you? Mobility. With highly in demand skills, you're in a sellers market. These folks can (in some cases) dictate their work contracts with employers (as long as they get their work done) such as "unlimited" vacation, whatever hours (within reason), office-perks, remote-work (read-- dicking hoes around the globe Bill Clittin' style) etc.
What else? Entrepreneurship. The ability to put together custom web apps and dick around with data is a hugely powerful skill. I don't know what it is about some highly skilled tech guys though-- it seems that there's a lot of these guys who lack creativity and business acumen, such that they're not starting their own endeavors... but holy fuck, the entire reason I have been teaching myself programming is to put together my own customized business software & web applications. I guess there are quite a few afraid folks who aren't willing to risk it all on their own business ideas (or perhaps they're just working the corporate life to save up capital to invest with / start a company with... or perhaps just to retire early & all of the above)

Don't listen to anyone who tells you IT isn't sexy, they're naive as fuck. IT = Power & money. Power & money = tingles

(I'm not talking about your average fatass database analyst or deusche bag VP of analytics with a harvard MBA being sexy. I'm talking about actual intelligent tech guys who have 130+ IQs, are lean & fit, holding down 6 figures+, technical degrees/equivalent work experience, working corporate jobs or on their own startups, (hopefully physically attractive-- for their own sake) who are Red Pill motherfuckers that recognize their own value. Granted... they're not easy to find. But holy fuck they have a good hand of cards in the casino that is the sexual market place)

The only problem which I find working on IT is that you can't find attractive women in your circle of work. Our job takes 1/3 of our lives. If you were working on a more "social" job such as a seller, barterner etc. you would get to meet a lot more social people and attractive girls. More girls --> easier to find what you want

That doesn't mean that girls find your job unattractive (that depends completly on you and how YOU view your own job). If you think your job sucks guess what other people will think?

I'm in IT. Mid 30's. Been doing it hard core for 8 years. $130 salary, $200+ with bonuses. Nearly doubled my salary twice. Had good luck. Had to take it when I knew I deserved it. Had to prove I, and my team, is worth it. If you think IT makes you unattractive, stop thinking for a second.

Go home and shave, get a fucking haircut, lose your weight, buy a few decent buttonup shirts that fit, buy some jeans that fit - it's not expensive. H&M for shirts ($25), 501s and 527s for jeans ($50). Buy an expensive brown belt. Buy an expensive black belt. Buy a pair of Italian brown shoes. Buy a pair of Italian black shoes. That's your uniform. Keep those motherfuckers shiny, and dry-cleaned. Shine your shoes after a night out, not before - that way you're ready to roll on short notice.

Find a cool small sneaker boutique in your town. Ask to meet the owner. He's in the back, I promise. Ask him to show you his favorite shit in the back. If you can't quite tell what you like, ask what's cool with the kids these days. Buy a pair. Tell him you appreciate what he built. Get his number. Stay in touch.

Now look around you. Realize that computers run the fucking world. Look up DHH. Learn some fucking Ruby. Learn some Python. Learn Postgres. It's free. Fuck PHP. Apply your new skills to something you're excited about.

Am I the guy you're talking about? I turned down a 140k software development job from Google to take on a much easier position that paid around half. That was a few years ago.

It has been to this date the best decision I've ever made. The next few years that followed turned out to be the best of my life in complete contrast to the ones before. For the first time in my life I was successful at building muscles, enjoying life, being social, friendly, cool and as a result consistently getting new pussy... The lack of stress just made me a much more attractive person to be around and really really improved my quality of life.

You're right though, it was not the specific nature of the job that was the problem. It was all the energy it sucked out of me. But I already knew that before I left. No 6 figure tech job comes without significant stress.

Ironically, as a result of making that move I ended up freeing enough energy that I started to develop a lot of other skills... Notably presentation skills. That allowed me to make the move to an even higher paying position that always seemed out of reach when I was killing myself with work in development.

Tl;dr: IT job really can hold you back. Your energy is limited. Be careful where you spend it.

I'm a group IT Director for SME international business and would say that women are going to judge you based of how you interact with them and not based off your job. If you're unable to control how you interact with women because you work in a specific field then the problem is with you and not your job. Your career should always come first, create that bubble of stability around yourself first and foremost.

I work in IT (100% Tech guy) and I pull women consistently. You just have to love your job ( or fake it ). I usually tell them I'm a superhero/Doctor. I make people happy by fixing their shit and the gratification that comes with the job is awesome. Just be confident and show them you love what you do. Fuck the rest.

To be fair, with IT guys, it's not necessarily "the job" that women find unattractive. There's a lot of negative stereotypes about the kind of guy that goes into IT - poor dress sense, nerd-hobbies, poor social skills, etc. I have a few friends in IT and they've completely fallen into this role.

So long as you fight those tendencies, and improve your dress sense / social skills though, it really shouldn't be an issue.

Having worked with a lot of men in various jobs within the IT sector, most tend to have a problem with one or more of the following:

Little knowledge of how to dress Yes, your "There is no place like 127.0.0.1" T-shirt is funny, to techs not to women, or society in general. Plus, "Jeans and T-shirt" is not everywhere wear.
No sense of personal grooming I know, I know, you spent the last 72 hours cooped up in front of a computer screen writing code, that is no excuse for hitting the bar sans shower, and shave.
Really specific field of interest Techs love talking tech, but most women are not overly interested in hearing the merits of .net vs php as applied to small-medium scale e-commerce platforms. This is a function of most technical IT personnel spending most of their time interacting with just other technical staff.
As present in the physical world as a ghost. Many men of this type are very much living in their heads so mindfulness training can be really useful here.

It depends on the type of bitch your looking for. There are extremely shallow women out there who just don't want to date guys like that. They stereotype everything and to them, you are the nerd. They think in terms of 'the police agent' 'the army guy or 'the computer geek'.

Let me tell you a story about the shallowness of women. I've always been a pretty popular guy in high school. Living in the countries capital. I know allot of people in town and usually my days were spent going out getting shitfaced, attending parties and events, doing contact sports or generally smoking up my stash of weed (guess which city I live).

So in comes this girl who approached me once, we hit it off because I was drunk and we began to see each other. With seeing I mean fucking. She was though slightly overweight and not really your typical doll. Compared to my other girlfriends she completely didn't measure up. But hey I had to check this one off the books.

This made me opt to hide her from any social hotspots in my city where I would run into friends of acquaintances. So I only took her to quiet boring places or kept her indoors. Usually I just made her bring me McDonalds and Weed while wearing some sexy outfit. In between the fucking I have to entertain myself so I tried the advice of a friend of mine and downloaded some computer games.

I really didn't give a fuck what she believed, so I made her play 2 player co-op games and such with me. Gotta do something at home while the balls recharge. This made her believe I have zero friends, no manly hobbies and all I do is smoke weed and play 8 bit Mario games. Get your head around that one.

She ditched my ass stating this some months later. The girl figured she was somehow above me. For comparisons, this girl came from the countryside in a small town where nothing happens. All I could do is laugh out loud and move on with my life. This confused the heck out of her, though I still think she believes her initial impression of me to this day.

Point is, you can be the top 10% in town. If you frame yourself as a low value loser she will believe it. The easiest way to do this is to fall into one of these stereotypes. What my story demonstrates is that women won't put in the effort to get to know you. You can fuck them for months and they won't even try. You have to show her who you are.

First of all, I have moral qualms about lying. If you don't, then consider that it's super easy to spot a liar, and women hate it.

It really isn't, ever noticed women lie allot? You won't be able to tell.

"Taking orders from people" - That part is BS. Whatever job you have you'll take orders from people, it doesn't matter if you're a manager or a CEO. There are always people to answer to.

It doesn't matter what job you have, you answer to someone. Even CEO has to answer to shareholders. I work in IT. I am the gate keeper between someone able to do their job or not. My job is extremely important. You can internalize this with any job. As long as you internalize this and exude the resulting confidence, getting women should be no issue.

OP very nicely introduced the problem with this type of guy. I think there's a certain type of "study hard" person that likes to devote the first 20 years of life to academia in a certain field, but financial and academic success as well as family pressures are only reasons they do it. They haven't got any real passion or interest in it, they just do it because their mom told them being a doctor is a good idea and they haven't thought beyond "well this makes economic sense so I might as well". They are their job. A big chunk of IT guys fit this bill.

These kind of guys are pretty successful academically, at least the ones I know nail it in their specialty since they work hard on it, but Jesus Christ, are they dull people. They're nice, but there's no real passion anywhere. They have pretty much no hobbies outside of study time. They don't like going out, or if they do, they do it very rarely. They're usually socially awkward in some way, if anyone brings up anything like literature or politics or any non-finance-gaining topic, they have nothing to say... They have no self-awareness or drive to improve either since they just stick around comparably dull people.

Maybe one day they can learn there's more important things in terms of personal development as they mature and get older, but for now, what OP said was right. You shouldn't use your job as an excuse to not develop, you can make time if you want to.

My gripe is that there are no women at all in my workplace. Also, I'm in India. And cold approaches haven't worked so far. Not that I'm stopping at that, but it does pinch me mentally that having girls in workplace that you talk to daily because of work would have made it that much more easy. Either that or the change in culture.
