See this shit all the time here, and honestly, it gets on my nerves.

I saw one (Upvoted and widely agreed upon) post the other day that sparked this rant, and it said

'Yeah, if you work in IT, you won't get girls. Especially if you're working on the bottom rung. I left my $150k YR job (!!!!!!!) to take a much lower paying job in another field. Women can smell it on you that you're taking orders all day. You'll always be the Tech guy'

Like holy shit, what?

This guy actually abandoned a $150k yr job for a lower paying job, in the (totally misguided) thinking that that's what was stopping him.

Even if it was stopping him (It wasn't, it was his insecurity about working in IT), that's still a terrible, terrible decision. YOUR CAREER COMES FIRST!

The guy didn't say if he's doing better after he left, but he might be. And if he is? It's placebo effect. He thinks that not working in It will help him, so the placebo effect kicks in, he got more confident and did better with women.

All of this 'Oh boo hoo I work in Tech' stuff is people trying to rationalize their failings away. They don't have to worry about their 90 LB squat 1 rep max, or their man tits, because hey, it's the IT job scaring women away!

I could tell you guys about how I work selling networking and test equipment and do well, but why fucking bother?

What I will tell you is that I love my work, and I'm super proud of where I am in life- plus, lots of these guys are super smart, so I'm proud to say that I work in the industry full of such smart guys.

Not being fucking ashamed for no reason is probably a big part of it.

Anyways, as far as the being on the bottom rung bit, sure you might have to take orders all day at work, but that doesn't mean you have to be a pushover doormat when you get off work.

The guy was also advocating lying outright: 'Oh present yourself as a project manager or executive'

First of all, I have moral qualms about lying. If you don't, then consider that it's super easy to spot a liar, (EDIT: Lots of push back here. Let me just say- if you're not a good liar, you will be caught. Most people think they are good liars, but they aren't). and women hate it.

Now, some people, are just born liars. These people actually convince themselves that the lie is the truth- in their minds, whatever they claimed, it's true- that's why there are no tells. No nervous twitching, no touching your neck, none of that. Are you that good at lying? no? Then why fuck yourself up?

Keep in mind people told the truth about their religion in the Spanish inquisition when faced with DEATH because they valued their integrity that much- and you want to lie about this? Get a life.

STOP. USING. YOUR. IT. JOB. AS. A. SCAPEGOAT.

Improve yourself, solve the real problems.

Working in the field for so long, most tech guys are shy, pushovers, have bad social skills, and look like shit. That's the real problem.

Quiting your job to make less money doing something else isn't going to fix you
