my cousin is 31 this year... she has no kids, is single... but I look up to her more than anybody else. she has a degree and an amazing job, heck before that she even worked for Spotify at one point. and when her contract for Spotify was over she travelled the world for six months. oh and she’s drop dead gorgeous. I just turned 31, not married and no kids. So what? I honestly never saw the problem with Bridget Jones being 32 and exactly that. I'm much rather single than in an unfulfilling toxic marriage that is just meh. I would like to get married and kids someday, but only with a guy that is actually compatible with me. And I'm not going to let "bUt YoU'rE tImE iS rUnNiNg OuT" people make me rush things. Great burn from the woman in the video btw.

This idea that women have to wed and breed super young is wrong on so many levels. And I feel like that attitude has intensified in the past 20 years or so.

At least before 9/11 and the 2008 crash, in NYC the fashionable ideal for having kids (with or without marriage) for women was always 30s. Late 30s or early 40s wasn't that unusual-- the time it took to sow oats and "accomplish great things."

I think the sheer expense of the city and high numbers of people with high stakes careers created a unique class hierarchy among women with the fabulous self-made whatevers-- artists, authors, journalists, intellectuals, fashionistas, creative gadzillionaires, etc.-- at the top who had no need of marriage or children to legitimize themselves. In fact it seemed a bit pitiable and a compromise if someone was "taken out" in their prime and bundled off to rich ghettos in Connecticut or LI to a life of kiddies and nannies and trader/corporate lawyer husbands (the same boring scumbags crowding clubs on weekends, hiding their wedding rings and hitting on single women) and stressful commuting.

When Sex and the City came out, it was taken as a huge embarrassment to the fab female set, like a hijack and fictionalized debasement of a certain lifestyle. Candace Bushnell was despised as an idiot and traitor who spread blood in the water making every pervy shark assume glam singles were all kinkmeishas and Fuckensteins like Samantha or PickMes like Carrie, dreaming only of an expedient age gap marriage as the logical end to shallow sexual adventures.

The show heralded the end of an era, though the destruction of NY women's culture was more about the rise of neoliberalism, vulture gentrification and the exodus of work-a-day artists from NYC after 9/11. Then the politics of the city swung raducally neoliberal, privatization went mad, college tuition became atronomical and the social stratas that were formerly marginally uncool ran the show.

But before that there was a sort of socialist glamour to being a struggling female bohemian, rising academic, etc. It had that Paris-in-the-1920s feel to it. It might be "okay" to marry a fellow struggling bohemian at a relatively young age (a little sad and worrisome because of the massive divorce rate for early marriage, unless you married "the best guy ever"). But if you bred before you could easily afford it, it's not like you could expect understanding or support (and certainly not envy) from your driven social set. Unless you had family in the city, you were fucked and you'd end up having to scuttle away upstate to raise kids or, worse, try to raise weedy, unhealthy, depressed kids in the polluted city air. If society wants younger breeders, then society should support families but it didn't back then just like it doesn't now. The difference "back then" was that the option of insta-breeding wasn't so attractive to metro women with ambition. There was less pressure.

There was an exception for breeding young-- a gravitas-glamour niche for young moms from the projects or ethnic neighborhoods struggling through night school-- back when good city schools cost low four figures a semester with a lot of available student aid--to get law or medical or general higher degrees. The latter made everyone else look silly and frivolous. I went to a once great city school and these women ruled.

At the bottom of the cultural esteem heap were the denizens of the uncool Upper East Side-- born-on-third-base debs, the Eurotrash descendents of supposed nobility, embarrassingly famous-for-nothing celebutants, the corporate trophy wives and husband hunters who consorted with the rapey ex-frat boy Trump Towers scum of the financial world or real estate vultures. Those people might breed young but it had a rich trailer park vibe to it.

One weird thing I think contributed to the traditionalist shift in NY was the end of the supermodel era. Like disadvantaged minorities rising through sports scholarships and sports careers, modeling was once a sort of gladiator path for some to get richer than Croesus in their 20s and beholden to no one, even if the means of doing this rode on unfortunate stereotypes. These women often came from nothing to command six-figure hourly salaries. They would launch their own fashion lines or other businesses, be quoted in the press (for better or worse) opining on health, culture, politics, etc. They attended serious book parties, hung with the intelligentsia and not just as trophy dates. Some would start going all feminist and actually dictate fashion, moving it away from pedophilia and anorexia and more towards womanliness and fitness. Because their careers depended on physical health, many would go full environmentalist and bash big polluters and the junk food industry. Some would even start calling out industry pervs. Quite a few were just idiots but something interesting started emerging from just the catalyst of a wealthy female coalition.

At some point that all changed. The fashion and publishing industries and related advertisers seemed to simultaneously decide they were done creating these expensive, mouthy, culturally-influential monsters and started putting actresses on fashion mag covers. Models became nameless and obscure again and so young and underfed that designer Itzhak Mizrahi compared them to expressionless Tomagotchis that die if you don't feed them. If models are ever given a celeb status or a commercial podium these days, they seemed to be pre-screened for vapid banality like the Kardshians.

Another side note about cultural standards for wedding and breeding age: I disagree with the common claim that parental age alone has driven up the disability rates for children. That wasn't such a huge concern when I was growing up.

Back in days of yore when many farming families had kids until they couldn't any more, certain modern disabilities that are now epidemic were either vanishingly rare or simply didn't exist. Unless there was a secret mass euthanasia program going on in the developed world, I don't buy that doctors are just smarter now and better at diagnosing because some disorders are so severe they would never have flown under the social radar (in the "tolerant" Victorian era or 1950's??) and would have been represented on historical SSI/SSRI rosters and private and public institutions (read Robert Whitaker's Anatomy of an Epidemic or Mad in America). But instead just the current rate of severe autism alone outstrips per capita rates of every other known cognitive disorder combined from 50 to 100 to 170 years ago. There's been such a huge media campaign to argue otherwise but it's ahistorical. I smell chemical industry PR all over that spin.

What's notably changed in the interim are levels of mutagenic chemical and neurotoxic exposure from every source just as Rachel Carson warned more than 50 years ago in The Silent Spring.

The relationship to age may be that the longer a parent has lived, the more years they've been soaking up the toxic shitstorm and the less cellular resistance they have to toxic assault. The fact that sperm seem to be particularly vulnerable to environmental toxins is shown in the fact that young men today generally have half the sperm counts of their fathers and that certain childhood disorders are associated with older dads but not so much older mothers. In fact, certain climbing rates of childhood disabilities correlate with first but not subsequent pregnancies, suggesting that if mom carries a toxic body burden, poor baby #1 is absorbing most of it (thus the sad saying in environmental medicine that "pregnancy is the best detox"). If it was solely age related genetic mutations that were causing these conditions, then rates in later pregnancies-- when mom is older-- would be higher.

So the takeaway is still concerning-- that age of parents may be a risk factor, but mostly for men and not necessarily a fait accompli for older mothers who eat and live clean.
