That’s a really creepy part of the story, NGL. But I always assumed her fairy godmother was a pro at facial contouring, momentary Botox (scrubbing out chimneys is hard on even a 17-year-olds skin), and magnetic lashes, that her dress came with magical spanx and a killer add-a-cup water bra, and of course she had some moisturizing masks for her hair to get the soot stains out, so it makes more sense that the Prince wouldn’t immediately clock her on sight.

You could reason if you wanted to that its "the magic" that made him not recognize her, because she was under the influence of magic when they met. I'm not saying it's a good excuse, but it is an excuse that has been used before. Miraculous Ladybug comes to mind.

This is how i always justified it. She was literally in a tornado of magic.
But then i started playing beach vball and people didnt recogize me wearing clothing and off the beach.
And now people dont recognize me w makeup and in dressy clothes

Watched the movie for shits and giggles last year and a few things I definitely didn't remember
-the entire reason for the ball in the first place, is because the king wants to get the prince laid so he can have grandkids. He's like, obsessed with having grandkids. It's bonkers. The prince is generally disinterested in relationships as a whole.
-they supposedly danced for hours but the prince never asked her name, and she never asked him who he was. She had no idea he was the prince until the end when he comes with the shoe.
What a strange movie, honestly.

The whole thing is of course messed up. But, I don’t think a king wanted grandkids is messed up. If their whole government is based on his male line, he’s going to want that to continue. The monarchy is a terrible way to govern. But, if you’re the monarch it’s in your best interest to have grandkids

Well, it’s been ages since I’ve seen it, but my lasting impressions were -
The hero that gets the girl is singing that he will make a man out of Mulan.
Mulan exceeds the men’s skills - that’s her journey - and that’s what exempts her from her culture and family expectations of women as less.
It presents womanhood as derivative of masculinity - like, if you take maleness and remove some of its qualities (bravery, strength, autonomy, assertiveness), then you get a woman. Ergo, women who overcome this “lack” in their own gender can escape the bonds of patriarchy and misogyny. Ergo, women who cannot escape those bonds are the ones at fault for remaining inadequate.
I’ve grown up hearing even relatively HVM have a daughter and suddenly blurt some version of “I’m going to raise her to not take BS from anyone,” in response to any gendered advice. As if how a woman is raised is what determines whether she’s assaulted or paid less or fired for pregnancy or impoverished by domestic violence. It’s the same mindset, it angers me, so I didn’t let me little ones watch it/ many other kids shows.
Of course, tho, it’s just a cartoon and it’s amazing to find inspiration there. I’ve always loved Cinderella (which is pretty messed up as a story) because she’s resilient, grows where she’s planted, and strategically rebellious enough to have a good time the one night it’s offered. Tiana’s character spoke to my stepdaughter for the same reason, despite some issues with that story (still much better than Cinderella tho, admittedly). I can see why Mulan’s character would speak so strongly to a lot of women too - she has a lot of amazing traits as an individual.
ETA: this is really long. Sorry.
TLDR: the societal messages in Mulan mirrored our own and I didn’t want to reinforce those, but the actual character Mulan is super admirable.

I like Mulan but what bugs me is when she is injured and the guys find out and they see her boobies they throw her out in the freezing cold snow to die!!! Even after she saved their life and everything. And she then saved their asses again and ended up with the douche bag that tried to kill her for being a woman because she was accepted by the emperor. That a nope for me. He deserved to be fired or hanged. Throw him out in the snow!!

Of course you love Cinderella, because you worship “femininity” (which by the way is imposed on us since birth), she doesn’t really buck the system, so she’s “safe”.
Mulan in the movie in not “exceeding” the men’s skills, it’s being true to herself and realizing she doesn’t have to be trapped by the feminine role imposed on her. The song is supposed to be ironic since Mulan is not a man, and unlike the men she solve her problems with not just brawn but brains. That say, I hated Mulan still ends up with a romance.
No Disney princess can be actually “feminist” and it’s silly to think of them as that. We can analyze them through a feminism lens, sure, but feminism is a series sociopolitical principles and actions.

There’s nothing wrong with being female. (There’s also not one uniform way to be female - “woman” encompasses a vast range of personalities, desires, looks, strengths and weaknesses.). We don’t have to earn respect by moving closer to being male. Being a woman isn’t something to be overcome. It’s not a flaw. We don’t have to “earn” respect from men by not having too much of the traits that men have labeled “female” (and then decided are less deserving of respect).
Being true to ourselves will look a bit different for each of us - many of us have no desire to be on a battlefield or have no female friends in our daily lives. Maybe Mulan did want those things and it’s a shame she had to break the rules to get them. But I recall it more as a story of a girl who wants respect for herself and her family (which is a natural and universal desire for both sexes) and -sadly- has to buck cultural traditions (without family support) to get it and help her family at immense cost to herself. Women sacrificing themselves on their family’s behalf is not new nor revolutionary.
I don’t see it as someone simply being true to their inner desire to join the military. I also don’t enjoy stories that require women to be “superwoman” or “superheroes” in order to have the life options that men are granted automatically. Human rights don’t need to be earned by women.

For the time Cinderella was created (1950s), having a female lead in a movie escape an abusive home in one of the only ways possible (marrying) and to royalty was ok for its time. But it is nice to be in a place now where we can recognise and demand better movies!

My favorite Cinderella movie is Ever After with Drew Barrymore. Angelica Houston is amazing as the evil stop mother!! She saves her damned self and then the prince shows up and is proud of her ‘grit’. I can watch that version over and over.
