In Australia the government goes out of their way to build, and if not build, fund housing for women. Yet cant even supply funding for men. Its a disgrace.

Solo dad here. When my fiancée left us it opened my eyes big time.

Men are disposable. We’re supposed to be stoic bastions of support and provision and there’s next to no help for us.

My ex on the other hand - lives 900kms away with zero cares. Her son cries for her often and she refuses to pay towards his upkeep.

I could fight her in court but she’d stop coming to see him 1 day a month in retaliation no doubt.

Deadbeat mums are so shitty because they just get away with everything.

Thing is, what's so different between a shelter for men (with children*) and women with children? Surely most of the facilities could easily be made unisex? I don't know the answer to that, but it seems like it's not a matter of facilities but discrimination.

My brother has the same issue in UK. He's a single father with 2 kids, it's been almost 5 years and still not housed. It's been quite a struggle for him and I help as much I can. The UK government seems to house women faster than men, not only statistically, but from what I've seen as well. I remember when my bro was speaking to a social worker about getting housed and they literally said that it's different for his case because his a male parent. To sum it up, they basically said that, he's a man, he should be able to pick himself up, women are more venerable and require more support. Where's the equality in that? I can go on forever with this, just look at the homeless men out there compared to women. I'm sure women fuck up in life just as much as men do but why are there so many homeless men? I can go on forever with this but I'll just stop there.

If someone opposed harmful gender roles and stereotypes, then shouldn't they oppose parents being restricted from shelters simply for their gender?

This is why we need a men's rights movement. Male discrimination is hurting children to. Feminism is not going to talk about things like this, so we are needed.

I found this confusing (as someone who often works in a family shelter in Canada). We have no women and children or men and children only shelters. They are family shelters that house families, however they look.

If he is having trouble finding housing at a family shelter because they are full that's one thing, but even a google search of Michigan comes up with nothing that says "Family shelter, no single fathers with children allowed." I am having trouble believing that.

To have female privlage then the world would be better place for all. Also now we see that homeless shelters have been exempt from gender discrimination, yet another example of the double standard in which the western world currently resides. I say we take a job away from a woman and give it to this man. A nice 9 to 5 job so he can still do the school and daycare runs. As well he should be moved to the top of the list for affordable housing. Enough of this crap where women are given EVERYTHING in thr name of equality but men are still held to a 1950 standard. #deathtothedoublestandard

Aaand theres the incredible double standard. A woman would not have these issues, there are shelters, there are resources, theres initiatives and if a woman was fired over a situation like this there would be 50 articles decrying it as sexist against a hardworking mother.

First, we have no idea why this guy's wife left. He could've cheated repeatedly, he could be an addict of some sort that refuses help, he could be abusive. Hell, my sister's in-and-out-of-jail druggie ex-husband tried to set her on fire, and he still managed to convince most of the people we knew that he was being victimized when she divorced him. It's also just as likely that she's a selfish asshole that left him for a lover, because of an addiction, or she just got tired of being married with five kids. My point is, we don't know...the article didn't say, and I'm not finding any more details in a search.

Assuming he's near Pontiac, where this story came from, there are 3 shelters that pop up in a quick google search, all of which accept men and children. If they're full, that's not discrimination, it's a lack of resources to deal with the problem.

Is this an awful situation? Absolutely. It's terrible for those kids no matter why their mom left, and if she left for selfish reasons it's also terrible for the husband. Not sure if jumping on the discrimination bandwagon is justified yet, though, at least without more information.
