And then she smears them anyway. I guess her role in House of Cards isn't really acting.

[–]Gimme_The_Loot 21 points22 points23 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's what I was thinking reading this. She basically did go public about it if she told people and it got published in NY Times.

[–]geniice -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

And then she smears them anyway.

Smears them? I really doubt netflix is too upset that its now public knowledge that they started by paying her less and now pay her the same as Spacey. The former would be kinda assumed and the latter is pretty harmless.

I guess her role in House of Cards isn't really acting.

It is acting but its also marketing. She got her show a mention in the New york times. Pretty good going no.

[+]nicksnacs 10 years ago* [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

Last I checked, she isn't the main character...

[–]HMTheEmperor 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Also before HoC I had no idea who she was and still think of her by her character name, so obviously originally star power was also why the imbalance was there, I assume.

[–]geniice -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ian Richardson is dead however.

The experts appear to view her as a co-lead and since I have no intention of watching the show, despite enough enough coverage here to keep r/HailCorporate happy, I guess I will have to go with their judgement.

[–]elebrin 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The first two seasons were pretty cool. Claire gets FAR less screentime than Frank. Heck, I'd consider her less important to the story than Stamper or Zoe.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

More accurately Wright agreed to an employment contract and didn't think it should be honored anymore, only to then not honor the new arrangement.

[–]geniice -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

More accurately Wright agreed to an employment contract and didn't think it should be honored anymore

Prove it.

, only to then not honor the new arrangement.

You know the terms of her current contract? Are you claiming to have broken into the office of netflix's lawyers or something?

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Prove it? Unless she was working for free or under the table in cash up to this point, she was working under the terms of an employment contract.

She didn't honor the whole part of not going public after she got her way.

You are either thoroughly misinformed about what these words mean or a troll.

[–]geniice 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Prove it? Unless she was working for free or under the table in cash up to this point, she was working under the terms of an employment contract.

Which is usually for a set number of shows or period of time. After that there is a fresh round of negotiation. Or are you trying to claim that nextflix planned for there to be 5 seasons from the word go?

She didn't honor the whole part of not going public after she got her way.

Do you have any evidence at all that that is actualy in the contract?

[–]TracyMorganFreeman -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It had been renewed for other seasons like a year ago. Negotiations had already been done.

Oh so because it might not be in the contract it's totes laudable she went back on her word?

This reminds me a lot of that dumb actress who played Skylar in Breaking Bad bitching about the same thing and the fact that everyone hates her character "because [she] is a woman".

Robin Wright isn't nearly as talented as Kevin Spacey, and before this show, I had never even heard of her. This kind of blackmail is hilarious and they should just have her killed off in the show.

[–]soalone34[S] 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I think Skylar is hated unfairly but not because she's a woman, people hated that rich guy who used to work with Walter just as much. They hated them for causing the main characters trouble and see in like "snobby" folk, but really they were reasonable regular people in the show.

[–]elebrin 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She was hated, because the show was a reversal: the good guy was cast in a negative light, and the bad guy was cast in a positive light. The whole point of the show was to push the audience into liking the bad guy and hating the good guy. If people had liked Skylar, then the writers would have fucked up.

[–]Spicy_Shart 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Idk, I totally get the hate for Skylar. She cheated on Walter and was completely cruel to him despite the fact that everything he did was for her and Walt Jr. Contrast that attitude with decreasing support for the War on Drugs in America and Skylar pretty much turns into a moralizing Nancy Reagan figure.

[–]soalone34[S] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She cheated on Walter

She isn't perfect, but you do realize at this point Walter became increasingly distant and secretive and was risking his life and his families for drug money

everything he did was for her and Walt Jr.

No it wasn't. That's how he justified it to himself but by the end of the series it's obvious it was for himself. He even admitted it at the last episode when he said "I enjoyed it, I was good at it." They had enough money to quit long before but Walter continued risking his life and the family.

Contrast that attitude with decreasing support for the War on Drugs in America and Skylar pretty much turns into a moralizing Nancy Reagan figure.

If anything it's the opposite, Walter continues his dangerous habit and stubbornly refuses to stop. Skylar at first is against it like people were on the war on drugs, grew to accept it, and in the end paid for it.

[–]Koalachan -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Not her fault if you haven't heard of her, she's only been acting for well over 30 years and was married to Sean Penn for a time. She's done an insane amount of work in Hollywood.

[–]rossraskolnikov 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's funny that you'd try to assert her fame in its own right by referencing who she was married to.

[–]EgoandDesire 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

So have thousands of other actors. I guess they should all be paid the same as A-list stars then? I'll go tell the guy who plays Peeta he should be paid the same as Jennifer Lawrence in the next Hunger Games film

[–]Koalachan -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Is there even another Hunger Games? I haven't seen past the first one. And if he walks in to the producers, negotiates that he should be paid the same as her, and they agree and end up paying him the same as her, then obviously he should be paid the same as her.

[–]EgoandDesire 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I doubt he can use the "sexism" card to blackmail them like she did, though.

[–]Koalachan -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't think she directly did though. She said she was just as important to the show, went through as much work as him, and was as popular, if not even more popular (depending on the polls). All are valid reasons why she should be paid as much as him. The excuses people are giving here on why she shouldn't be aren't valid, because he isn't an A-list actor either and hasn't been for some time. They've both been acting a long time, they've both had massively successful breakthrough movies, and both are main characters of the show.

[–]aokusman 23 points24 points25 points 10 years ago (52 children) | Copy Link

Why didn't she ask for what she felt she was worth? That's would make sense.

[–]rossraskolnikov 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you're selling something on Ebay, do you ask for what you feel its worth, or what you feel you can get for it?

[–]elebrin 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hate to break it to you, but things are only worth what you can get for them.

You could steal a widget from the richest group of people on the planet, people who are so wealthy that only they could afford this particular widget. Guess what? The value of that widget just went down, because you can only sell it to the second richest group of people around, because if you try to sell to the richest, they will know you stole it...

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

So, she should have negotiated that at the start, rather than accepting the offer and signing the contract, then turning around and trying to blackmail her employers for more money once they were invested.

[+]Zoidbergluver -9 points-8 points-7 points 10 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

Was she a star at the time the show began? Her worth has increased over time as she has gotten more famous. She has every right to renegotiate her contract.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 10 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Through blackmail? What a way to poison your relationship with your employer, and then to turn around and expose them anyway? I'd fire her on principle and swallow the wrongful dismissal suit.

[+]Zoidbergluver -17 points-16 points-15 points 10 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Shes not blackmailing them. She is saying "pay me the same as you pay men or I will tell everyone what you are doing". If they don't want to get into trouble for doing something, then they shouldnt be doing it. It isnt blackmail when they are fucking her over and she has the guts to come forward about it. It is literally illegal to pay people different wages based on gender/sexual orientation/ect. If she thinks they are paying her differently based on gender, she has every right to call them out on it.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

It is literally illegal to pay people different wages based on gender/sexual orientation/ect

Yeah, if you are a WAGE earner or a SALARIED worker. This is entertainment, where you get paid by what you bring in, not some wage scale or negotiated union contract. What you make for your employer determines what you get paid, and Spacey reliably brings in more money, clear across his career, than Robin Wright does.

With your logic, a superband that packs stadiums should get paid the same as a garage band that can't fill the local pub with their family members, because they are both bands.

Shes not blackmailing them.

She absolutely is. If you threaten a negative consequence in order to get financial gain, it's blackmail. She had a contract, she could negotiate a new deal at the end of that contract, but instead she held them for ransom mid contract. That's blackmail.

[+]Zoidbergluver -7 points-6 points-5 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

If they are not doing anything wrong, then her threatening to tell people what they are doing shouldn't be a problem. If they are not doing anything wrong, what information would she have to "blackmail" them with? You can't have it both ways. They are either not doing anything wrong and she isn't blackmailing them, or they are doing something wrong (to her) and she is threatening to tell people if they don't fix it.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

Are you sure you're in the right subreddit?

In here, we see false rape claims all the time, and those false rape claims destroy people's lives, religiously. Claims don't need to be TRUE to be impactful. This has nothing to do with what Netflix was actually doing wrong (and paying the bigger draw for your show more money isn't at all illegal), but what she could successfully make stick with the public. It was not a threat of exposure, but a threat of negative PR.

And you fell for it, clearly.

[–]Zoidbergluver -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

But it is true... You can google how much they both get paid and see that Spacey gets more than Wright. So she is getting paid less based on something. If you google their backgrounds, you can see they both starred in classics and popular films. If you watch the show you know they are both stars of the show. So, it is not that ridiculous to think that the something is gender. You may not agree, but I can see why she and her supporters might think that. And if she really thinks she is being paid less based on her gender, she is totally within her right to fight that. It is not "blackmail".

[–]Rooi_Aap6 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Spacey was before the show started a lot more famous and a double Oscar winner. He was more valuable for the show. Robin's role is center to the plot, but she wasn't the main character initially. She did become more and more valuable. She is within her rights to negotiate a better deal now because of her established character. What is shitty is that she threatened Netflix/producers to call them sexist in public if they don't give her a raise mid contract. Being called sexist in the arts is poison, so of course they gave her the raise. Then she went public (indirectly) anyway. So she used the sexism card as a mid contract negotiation tactic, and then acted in bad faith anyway. This is what is rustling the jimmies in this sub. She used her female privelage to get what she wants and then went on and be an asshole anyway .

[–]wrekd3 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You are arguing with a feminist and a troll. Why? You're never going to convince her.

[–]Rooi_Aap2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It is xer, shitlord /s. Yeah didn't realise it was a troll until further down when it said it never heard of Kevin Spacey.

[–][deleted]2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yeah, the "something" you're looking for is screen time and lines.

Otherwise the very same argument you've made for Wright applies to all the other actors in the ensemble. Should Michael Kelly get the same money as Spacey and Wright, simply by virtue of the fact he's also in the cast, also an actor and also part of making an award winning show? Or ... is there perhaps a metric that involves the actual number of scenes you're in, the number of lines you have, and the relative importance of the character that partly determines what you get paid?

Look at Jennifer Lawrence's bullshit claim that she got underpaid on American Hustle. She "neglected" to mention that she had fewer lines, fewer scenes, less screen time, and worked fewer days than most of her male co-stars, didn't she? When you compute her hourly or daily, or compute it based on screen time, she was the highest paid actor on that set.

[–]victorfiction2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

She works less than he does on the show. Why should she make more than he does ?

[–]Zoidbergluver1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Not more. EQUAL.

[–]victorfiction3 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

It's not equal if she's paid the same episodic fee but works less on average per episode. Then she's being paid more for less work.

[–]victorfiction 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Who works more? Equal pay for equal work. Spacey definitely is on camera more time than robin.

[–]dork_souls 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It isnt blackmail when they are fucking her over and she has the guts to come forward about it. It is literally illegal to pay people different wages based on gender/sexual orientation/ect.

Shes an actor. She is valued at a certain rate and then paid at that rate. Do you think all actors earn the same in a movie? Do you think that Brad Pitt and Meatloaf were paid the same for Fight Club?

If she thinks they are paying her differently based on gender, she has every right to call them out on it.

In an industry where people are valued hugely on their talent (and they don't get to value themselves or everyone would demand $100 Million), she claims she's been valued on her gender. Its pathetic.

[–]victorfiction 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I hope they kill her off the show. Her character is so 1 note.

[–]Koalachan 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She's been acting for over 30 years.

[–]ThatEconGuy 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

It is crazy to anyone who can actually think. Like all other feminists, context is like kryptonite to you. This is not a woman thinking she deserves the same pay as a man. This is a, at absolute best, B-list actress who barely anyone knew before she got cast thinking she deserves the same pay as an A-list actor whose name alone can act as advertisement.

In the upcoming Black Widow movie, let's say the two leads are Scarlett Johansson and some guy whose only previous acting credit was "screaming civilian #6" in Age of Ultron. Be honest with me, who do you think is going to have a significantly higher paycheck? If you say "HURR OF COORSE TEH RANDOMZ MEN GETS MORE MONEYZ CAUSE MUH-SOGGY-NEE HURR DURR", smack yourself on my behalf and guess again.

[–]bananarepub 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

oh come on. she is well known. not in leading roles but well known.

[–]ThatEconGuy 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If this was the 80s/90s you might have a fraction of a point.

[+]Zoidbergluver -7 points-6 points-5 points 10 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

I have never heard of Kevin Spacey before this show. Robin Wright on the other hand has been in The Princess Bride, Forrest Gump, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and a ton of other popular/classic films. Acting is subjective as to who is "good" and "bad", but you cannot compare this woman to "screaming civilian 6". In my demographic, under 30s women, she is more famous than Spacey. Also, on House of Cards, she is a STAR of that show. She should get paid as much as the other stars (aka Spacey).

[–]McFeely_Smackup 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If you haven't heard of Kevin Spacey, I'm pretty sure you're not qualified to be discussing Hollywood pay scales.

[+]Koalachan -9 points-8 points-7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Neither are you if you haven't heard of Robin Wright (Formerly Penn)

[–]EgoandDesire 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh get the hell out of here. There is no way in hell you two are going to convince anyone that Robin Wright is just as famous as Kevin Spacey. If this is seriously the tactic you're going to go with just fuck off right now.

[–]ThatEconGuy 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I have never heard of Kevin Spacey before this show.

Your ignorance is not an argument. Otherwise I could argue that I've never heard of Robin Wright before this show, therefore she's less famous and doesn't deserve as much pay as Spacey. Why not? My useless anecdote is as valid as yours. The problem is, I didn't use that argument because I'm not so arrogant and up my own ass that I think my knowledge of a subject has anything to do with anything.

Spacey has stared in The Usual Suspects, Se7en, L.A. Confidential, and American Beauty and many other classic films that are more critically and, most importantly from a paycheck point of view, financially successful than the ones Robin has stared in. You're probably one of those people who thought Barkhad Abdi deserved as much pay as Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips because "THEY WUZ BOTH STARZ AND SHEET".

In my demographic...

And Screaming Civilian #6 is the most popular actor in the "people who hang out at his favorite bar" demographic. So what? John Kasich was the most popular Republican candidate among Republicans in Ohio. Therefore he deserved the presidential nomination. You're not the only one who can uselessly divide and sub-divide demographics until you manufacture the desired result. I also don't care how much you might whine about much bigger your demographic is compared to my examples, the argument still holds because the demographic you cut the 30ish women out of is larger as well.

but you cannot compare this woman to "screaming civilian 6"

It was an intentionally exaggerated example to illustrate why it's not crazy to imagine someone getting less pay even though they're both stars in a movie/show. Pay attention!

Let's address the elephant in the room though. She was effectively blackmailing the producers to increase her salary for her part, and then released the blackmail even after she coerced them into raising her pay. I know you know that's wrong because you haven't tried to explain it, hoping everyone else would forget about it. Tough shit. Explain to me why she doesn't deserve to get fired for such despicable behavior?

[–]Koalachan -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Otherwise I could argue that I've never heard of Robin Wright before this show

ITT That seems to be a lot of people's arguments against her. She was a pretty big actor in the 80s and 90s, and while Princess Bride was her biggest movie and breakthough role, it was hardly the only thing she did.

It isn't blackmail. If you think the show is not doing anything wrong, then how could she be blackmailing them? If you think the show is doing something wrong, then she is not blackmailing them, she is calling them out on screwing her over. The title is click bait/ pandering to people who don't want the star of a huge show to get a raise just because she gasp female.

[–]soalone34[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No no no. It is blackmail, she'd be unleashing an army of feminists on them for paying her less.

[–]ThatEconGuy 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Our entire FUCKING argument in this thread was to determine whether or not she actually was screwed over. You know what, fuck off. Go back to SRS and cry about misogyny and oppression. It's clear that you don't have anymore arguments (otherwise you would've mentioned something other than the blackmail thing) and you're only interested in virtue signaling.

Also yes it is blackmail because the thing being revealed could be false. End of discussion, have a nice day.

[–]magus678 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Then you are a cinema moron.

[–]Zoidbergluver 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]DillipFayKick -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]soalone34[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

You're missing the point. She is not worth as much as Kevin Spacey because she is not nearly as famous and doesn't draw in nearly the same amount of viewers. If she had to argue her salary based on that she would have failed to raise it to be equal. Instead she chose to blackmail the company by saying she'd unleash a mob of feminists after them by claiming sexism where there is none.

This isn't about gender in the way you're referring, do you think the male costar in Hannah Montanna gets paid as much as Hannah Montanna did? No he doesn't.

The sexism is that there is no way he could blackmail a studio like this with publicly calling them sexist for not paying him equally to a role that is far more valuable then his.

[–]Zoidbergluver -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

The show was called Hannah Montana, so obviously she is the star. However, she is considered a "star" of House of Cards, not a side character. Can you provide sources to show that she is more popular or brings in more viewers? Personally, I think more people have seen The Princess Bride and Forrest Gump than have seen any Spacey movies.

[–]soalone34[S] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Okay, let me make this simple.

Look at the hunger games. Both Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are the stars, but Jennifer gets paid way more.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2185546/10m-girl-Jennifer-Lawrence-heads-gym--stars-Liam-Josh-threaten-walk-Hunger-Games-sequel-meagre-pay-deals.html

See this article. It specifically states they don't demand equal because they know she brings in more viewers.

Do you think this is sexism? Do you think Josh would receive the same support if he demanded he be paid the same as an actor who is way more valuable?

Also, Kevin Spacey is way more popular then Robin Wright, that's just a fact. Your anecdotal position of ignorance doesn't denounce this.

edit: here

https://blog.kissmetrics.com/how-netflix-uses-analytics/

Netflix actually made house of cards BECAUSE they noticed fans of the original house of cards were also fans of Kevin spacey movies.

If you need more proof

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000228/awards

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000705/awards

Notice Kevin Spacey had two oscars BEFORE starring in house of cards.

This isn't about him being a man and her being a woman, look at the hunger games example I have you. If you draw in more viewers you are paid more. The wage gap hysteria was used by Wright to blackmail the company into paying her more then she would have gotten them too by just negotiating on her own value.

[–]Zoidbergluver -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Only Jennifer Lawrence is the star of the Hunger Games... She is the narrator, it told soley from Katnisses pov, and Peeta doesn't even come into play until half way through the first book.

Do you have any evidence to back up your "fact" that Spacey is more popular than Wright? We can check out the popularity of their movies and I think we would find Wright has more popular movies. Forrest Gump and The Princess Brides are classics.

[–]soalone34[S] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Only Jennifer Lawrence is the star of the Hunger Games... She is the narrator, it told soley from Katnisses pov, and Peeta doesn't even come into play until half way through the first book.

And in the later movies that made most of the money they have nearly equal screen time. They are co stars. Also Kevin Spacey narrates house of cards and talks directly to the audience.

I edited my comment with sources as well.

[–]rossraskolnikov 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Do you have any evidence to back up your "fact" that Spacey is more popular than Wright?

Really? Spacey has been a high end A Lister for 15 years. He's probably the most prestigious actor working in TV. I like Wright, but she's far from being Meryl Streep or Cate Blanchett. And Seven, American Beauty, The Usual Suspects and LA Confidential aren't classics?

[–]elwahrio 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, for one, Kevin Spacey is googled twice as often as Robin Wright is:

https://www.google.com.au/trends/explore#q=kevin%20spacey%2C%20Robin%20Wright&cmpt=q&tz=Etc%2FGMT-10

And here is a comparison of their most popular movies, although she's only in a half-dozen scenes in Forrest Gump. The significant difference being that Kevin Spacey is personally largely responsible for the success of those movies, where Robin Wright just happens to be in them. https://www.google.com.au/trends/explore#q=%2Fm%2F016fyc%2C%20%2Fm%2F0c0zq%2C%20%2Fm%2F07nn0%2C%20%2Fm%2F01dc0c%2C%20%2Fm%2F0bdjd&cmpt=q&tz=Etc%2FGMT-10

Having said that, I do like her character in HoCs, but you are delusional if you think Claire is the main character and not Francis. Your argument from ignorance is amazing. Of course we should all take your word for it that the person who played a bit-part in Forrest Gump is more famous than a two-time academy award winning A-List actor!

[–]rossraskolnikov 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]ttnorac 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

She's great in the show, but Spacey carries it. That's equal pay for unequal work.

[–]smaches -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Id say they do they have nearly the same amount of screen time, so it probably is equal work.

[–]ttnorac 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Perhaps, but unequal draw. Definitely unequal roles. It's the story of Frank Underwood, not Frank & Claire Underwood.

[+]smaches -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Thats the whole plot of the most recent season... how as much as he wanted it to be just his story its really the story of both of them. And how the story is better and stronger for having them both.

[–]ttnorac 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

So you feel that both actors are both equally to the show for draw and story?

[–]smaches -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

It didnt start that way, but yes, I feel she contributes to 50% of the plot. There are whole story arcs with her that dont have anything to do with him. (Her mother dying, her boyfriend, terrorist negotiations) wheras lately there is hardly any personal drama or stories that involve him without her.

[–]ttnorac 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Then we just have to agree to disagree. She had a short sub-plot for backstory, but she is still not the main character. The show could still be great if her character left, but it would be a different show altogether if Spacey left.

[–]rossraskolnikov 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'd say she's very important, and had become more so. I'd compare her to Aaron Paul on Breaking Bad. BrBa is undeniably Walter White's story, but Jesse's almost of equal importance-- and some are actually more interested in him.

[–]ttnorac 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So would you say they should both be paid the same? I don't. I think Cranston can and should demand a higher fee than Paul.

[–]rossraskolnikov 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No. I'd say Cranston deserves more. But if Paul had pushed it and got equal pay, I wouldn't have a strong reaction. Because an argument can be made. And in a free market, in show business, people don't get what they deserve. They get what they can negotiate.

[–]ttnorac1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

I very much doubt this is true. They could have sent her packing; she needs them much more than they need her. This was a media setup, for whatever reasons, in which Netflix were complicit.

There you go. Nice.

I've been accused of being a cynical arsehole of late. Maybe it's true.

But i'm calling shenanigans. This is the modern incarnation of Public Relations. It promotes the show to particular demographic, it promotes Netflix as being "progressive", it promotes Penn herself, and most of all it serves to propagate an ideology (this is where i'm an arsehole, apparently).

If Penn left the show, it would go on. If Spacey left the show, it's over.

[–]soalone34[S] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I'd say it's immoral. This is just an example of the negative effects from feminists drilling the wage gap myth in everyone's head.

[–]rossraskolnikov 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You use whatever you can in a negotiation. People should be more pissed at Netflix for caving.

[–]Aarondhp24 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

[–]soalone34[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

When did I say that?

[–]Aarondhp24 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You said this is an example of the negative effects of feminists drilling the wag gap myth in to everyones heads. So you're suggesting she bargained like this because of feminism. So before feminism was a thing, people didn't and this is strange and inappropriate behavior.

[–]soalone34[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No, without the paranoia she wouldn't have been able to bargain like this. It's not like she said she'd leave the show or she wants more pay because she brings in # of viewers, she was going to public ally shame them for being "sexist" for not paying her more. The company understood this would lead to an angry mob of feminists and capitulated.

[–]Aarondhp24 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No, without the paranoia she wouldn't have been able to bargain like this.

And this is her fault how? She's using the leverage that exists, she didn't create it. The wage gap myth is a myth, but it just landed her $500k an episode. She bargained. That's all there is to it.

[–]soalone34[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Okay? But just because she can do it doesn't mean it's okay to do it, it's an immoral thing to do.

[–]pvtshoebox 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

At first I was stunned because Spacey is probably the best and most accomplished actor anywhere on "TV" - so how could she think she deserves as much as his share? I remembered, though, that Claire Underwood had a much MUCH bigger role this season. There were at least two or three episodes where she was on screen for more than half of the time and Frank has less then a minute.

[–]rossraskolnikov 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is awesome! Do you guys see this as negative?

[–]soalone34[S] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I see it as a negative yes,

Kevin Spacey is way more famous and the face of the show, it makes sense to pay him more. It would be like if the male brother in the Hannah Montanna show demanded he be paid as much as Miley Cyrus.

She blackmailed them to do this by saying she'd unleash angry feminists onto them by telling the public they're sexist.

[+]criticalcontext 10 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

She plays an equal role in the show according to the screenwright. She has become very famous from it, and she polls well. There is no shame in using fan support to raise your salary, they are actors, fans are their product.

If there is any inequality between them, it comes from her being cast in the wife role. Even in an equal marriage, to the viewer that makes her lesser. I think there is definitely a case for sexism here. And it doesn't hurt Kevin Spacey for her to have a higher salary, so I don't know how this is a "mens rights" issue. I came here to see if there are people who care about men as a gender deserving of support, not to see women fighting for their rights demeaned.

[–]soalone34[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She plays an equal role in the show according to the screenwright. She has become very famous from it, and she polls well

No she doesn't, if her character died the show would not take a huge hit, if Kevin Spacey's character died the show would be severely damaged. You aren't going to convince anyone she is as famous and draws in as many people as Kevin Spacey does on this show.

If there is any inequality between them, it comes from her being cast in the wife role. Even in an equal marriage, to the viewer that makes her lesser. I think there is definitely a case for sexism here.

Lol, what are you even talking about? Does Peeta get paid as much as Katniss in the hunger games? No of course not. Does the male brother character get paid as much as Hannah Montanna in that show? No he doesn't. This isn't sexism, this is the logical fact some actors are more important assets worth more. It's not because he's a man, it's not because he's a husband. I just named multiple examples where the females made more, for more examples see the entire modeling industry or porn industry. If you draw in more people in the entertainment world you are worth more.

And it doesn't hurt Kevin Spacey for her to have a higher salary, so I don't know how this is a "mens rights" issue.

This is a perfect example of how feminist propoganda of the wage gap myth is toxic. The company had every legal right to pay her less because she didn't draw in as many people. She didn't just argue for higher pay because of how many people she draws in, she specifically threatened to go public and call the company sexist for paying her less. The company realized they'd be facing a feminist mob and caved in.

I came here to see if there are people who care about men as a gender deserving of support, not to see women fighting for their rights demeaned.

I don't care why you came here. This is a men's rights issue and if you think a gender reversed version would have been celebrated or even tolerated (see examples above) you're delusional.

if her character died the show would not take a huge hit, if Kevin Spacey's character died the show would be severely damaged.

I disagree, she is listed as his motivation for continuing in many ways. I don't think he could do his campaign without her, especially seeing how he handled the separation. As for if Kevin Spacey died, I know House of Cards would be over, but I would definitely watch a Robin Wright focused spin-off. She is at least that interesting. Actors get paid what they are worth, and Netflix can't afford to loose either of them.

Does Peeta get paid as much as Katniss in the hunger games? No of course not.

Similarly, what are you even talking about? These are not the same character structures. I recognize that Kevin Spacy is the main character of House of Cards and Katniss is the main character of Hunger Games. But if Peeta decided he wanted to quit in the second movie, (ignoring the fact it's in his contract he can not) then he would be JUST as valuable for the continuation of the series. Non-main characters, if they are important enough to warrant it by the company, can indeed threaten for equal pay as main characters.

The company had every legal right to pay her less because she didn't draw in as many people.

And they have every right to raise her salary in support of political causes as well. It casts their business in good light. All I hear here is someone complaining that someone's speech should be limited because they see the result as unfair.

This is a men's rights issue and if you think a gender reversed version would have been celebrated or even tolerated (see examples above) you're delusional.

If a gender reversed situation happened, it wouldn't be news. I'm struggling to think of a situation where a male would handle this situation in the same way, so lets not deal in contrapositives.
