When I was in college, my university had separate parking lots. A female lot next to campus and a male lot 15 minutes away. They justified it saying that it was to prevent women from being attacked while walking to their cars (despite no evidence of such an attack ever occurring at the school). The reality though, is that it's part of the massive system of preferential treatment that women get because there's such a push for them to go into engineering.

In the UK we have "mother and child" parking spaces all over the place. I get why it's good to have more accessible parking spaces for children, but why the fuck does it have to be for mothers and not fathers?

At least those appear to be normal parking spaces, opposed to giant ones which taper outwards. Which are actually pretty funny, and probably beneficial due to who is likely to use them.

This is also about business. Somebody probably thinks that women are more likely to shop somewhere if they can park nearer the store and are shown some kind of special treatment, and they are probably right.

You know what is funny about this to me? Is the complete waste this is.

From the look of the image, I'd be willing to put money that this is for a shopping centre. Considering that women spend the majority of money, that would also make them the majority of people in shopping centres to spend said money.

They've just given exclusive spots to a group that was already a majority at said location, assuming that this is for a shopping centre.

A mayor of some German town had a hilarious response to this: he allocated two difficult to park in spaces to men. Caused some saltiness from women's groups who deemed it insulting to women. Was perfect.

we have "expectant mothers only" parking spots in B.C. Canada I park in them all the time. they cannot give a ticket for it. I get some strange looks but I cant say I care.

So I'm from Malaysia and this is fairly commonplace. It kind of pisses me off, but it seems fairly justified at least in the case for my country - there have been a slew of snatch-thefts over the last few years, and women seem to the primary victims, simply because it's easy to drive by on a shitty moped, snatch a handbag and putter off. I should point out that men typically aren't allowed in the ladies-only parking area at all, which is consistent with the purported safety reason.

Long story short - it seems like a reasonable idea in my backwater snatch-thievey country, but I'd still like to see more stats. (Are snatch-thieves mostly men? Are victims really mostly women? It seems like it's a yes, at least in Malaysia.) Not sure how to justify it for a safer place like germany though

The first time I saw women's only parking spaces in germany they were considerably larger. The implication that they were there to make it easier to park had me in stitches at 16. When I thought about what the parking space would look like at night, it kinda made sense to have a couple next to the handicapped spaces to reduce walk length to the road restaurant.
