This is especially interesting considering that women already outnumber men in college attendance. Most of the time, people can fall back on claims of "the patriarchy" to justify their preferential treatment of women. They say that women are inherently disadvantaged and need things like these scholarships to be on equal ground. But here, men are clearly at a disadvantage and people are still offering more help to women. And yet, I'm sure feminists will still find a way to justify this, blame men for all the problems, and continue to advocate against scholarships for men.

The fact that females have more scholarships available to them may still reflect the historical social barriers they had to face to attend college in the past. I am genuinely shocked that there are significant numbers of scholarships that can only be awarded to male students.

I wonder if they count scholarships that are de facto awarded only to one sex (e.g. NCAA football scholarships), or if they have to explicitly state the beneficiary's sex?

This all stems from the Feminists mindset of the 1970s. "Women are oppressed, held back, under performing, under represented... and the cause of all these problems is because of sexism, most of it from white males".

Girls reached academic parity with boys in 1981.

Since then, however, every business industry, every academic institution, every government agency has continued with the "we need to help these victims" mindset built into their psyche to the point where it is blasphemy to go against the "girls are oppressed" narrative.

Grammar school teaching is completely slanted towards females. The entire format and focus is changed for girl's learning styles. Boys graded worse for the same work. Much more likely to be drugged, disciplined, held back.

Feminism and their hysteria regarding false molestation forces male teachers away.

The results of this bias and preferential treatment aren't an accident, girls outperform boys across the board... with the one exception of science and math. Feminists respond with WWIII to increase the scores and numbers for girls in STEM, yet continue to say nothing regarding the huge disparities where boys are falling behind everywhere else (especially reading)

Keep going. Now we're at college where females are approaching an incredible 60% to 40% majority, yet they still have over 4 times the number of scholarships available to them vs. their male counterparts.

Then, once they graduate, these same girls actually earn more than their male counterparts before they start having children.

Yet... the narrative continues. The preferential treatment continues. The cries of victimization and sexism never end. Every public policy on this subject revolves around giving an upper hand to girls and women. Everyone repeated the same falsehoods over and over again like hypnotized zombies who are stuck in the year 1970.

This article is incredibly poorly written. While I don't doubt the numbers, they did a terrible job displaying them.

-Of course California has the most scholarships, it's the biggest state. They could have divided by high school graduation numbers or at least population to find a meaningful number ($/student?).

-The text says there are 4x as many female-exclusive scholarships, but the graph clearly shows 6x as many. There's also no mention of the dollar amount.

-They use some bullshit "past social barriers" explanation to explain the discrepancy.

-This data only includes number of gender-restrictive scholarships, and says nothing about actual scholarships awarded or dollar amount received by gender. It could very well be that men still receive more money (say in gender-neutral STEM scholarships) according to this data.

While I don't disagree with the sentiment, this isn't good data to back it up.

Wouldn't a true equality feminist be against this? Obviously one gender is being given a massive advantage over the other. Where is the outcry against this? I don't see how any of them can seriously see this and not reflect on the extreme hypocrisy this is. You would think we would hear a sane one or two come out and say women are doing fine in school and this coddling just makes it seem like women are getting special treatment, which is sexist. I swear, everytime I have talked to or debated one I get the line, feminism is in support of both genders. I laugh.

But women do not out-pace men in college admissions nor earning their degrees by 4 times, and men certainly out-pace women in earning more lucrative degrees, the types of degrees that are highly valued in the job marketplace, and actually use their degrees more than women do throughout their lives. Men still outperform women... even with those 500 pound weights the systems and society attaches to men. Kind of makes me feel a little bit of pity for women in a way, but not really.

That's quite badly phrased. Hardly any (5%) of the scholarships were restricted by sex. Of those few, sure, more were for women.

The title makes it sound like four times as many scholarships are given to women as to men.

What it's actually saying is that roughly 1% are specifically for men, 4% for women, and 95% to whichever. I would presume that none are really allocated to men: the small number that seem to be just for men are for sporting scholarships in sex-segregated sports. The women would benefit from a few of such places too, plus many more academic places which are specifically given to women in order to get them into STEM or whatever. I'm heartened to see that 95% are not subject to that sort of discrimination.

I'm not sure where the 4 times number comes from, it looks like 6 times to me (50 to 300). Of the private scholarships analyzed (5,864), 0.8% (~50) were specifically for men out of the 5.9% (~350) scholarships that had gender restrictions. I don't really see the issue though considering the sources are private. If this were data on discrimination in Pell Grants or similar programs that would be a different matter.

It is easier for women to complete their education than men. Women are already ahead of men of the percentage of of University's student pop, and faculty makeup. Therefore they WILL make up the majority of professionals after the baby boom generation retires. Well I guess that balances out years of Men dominating the professional/education scene for years right.

While I don't believe anyone should be given favoritism for their race/sex, before we get too up in arms let's keep in mind that women-only scholarships only make up about 5% of the total number. So it doesn't seem like being male would significantly reduce your chances of getting a scholarship, all else being equal.

I'm surprised this doesn't get more attention. When I was considering grad school I checked out the available scholarships, grants, etc. It's incredible how many are explicitly discriminatory in regards to race and gender. It's also eye-opening how many graduate level positions at a school are (apparently) required to be filled by non-white, non-male students.

does this mean that scholarships for both were not counted? if so, that means men have access to 96% of scholarships vs women 99%. A 3% gap IS a gap, but like the remaining unexplained wage gap in CONSAD/AAUW studies, is not a substantial effect.

I make that 12 times as many for only-females as only-males

Thank you so much for this. It's something I'm personally experiencing, too, especially in STEM where there are a LOT of scholarships for women (and as of recent years, a decline in men entering the fields. Interesting how there aren't scholarships to get women on oil rigs or to do high-rise construction or anything dangerous or dirty. Nah, just scholarships for the high-paying, cushy jobs... but that's another topic...) I'm a white male, and no one is throwing money at my feet or paving the way to an education with gold. I'm not feeling ANY of that supposed "privilege" I have. I mean ffs, this summer, my only option for attending college is winning scholarships. And if I can't get that paid for, I have to wait another YEAR to take the classes I need, because they're only offered once a year. x_X

Since men are a minority on campus now, I guess I could follow some advice here http://www.collegescholarships.org/scholarships/white-scholarship-guide.htm and argue that men, as a campus minority, are eligible for minority scholarships (though I don't agree 100% with all the points the article makes...)

This figure hides an even uglier truth; women (and minorities) get their special scholarships that guys/whites need not apply for.... And get to compete for the ones we can apply for, too. And get preferential selection in those because 'diversity'.

If you looked at rates that they actually receive scholarships, I'll bet that it is more like 100:1, not 4:1

My gf, who is hispanic, got out of her undergrad without paying a dime and without ever applying for more than a couple scholarships a semester. Now she is in grad school, and is getting paid to attend. I'm $40,000 in debt, halfway through my undergrad, and have given up applying for scholarships after being rejected by 100+ every semester so far.

And to think, 60% of all those women will only major in the absolute easiest liberal arts fluff majors there aren't even jobs for in the job market, while another 35% will major in low grade education, nursing and accounting and 5% actually majoring in medicine, law or STEM and then 95% of those women will drop completely out of the workforce and flake out to become housewives in just a few years. College for women is nothing more than a very expensive summer camp and the one place they can go in society where they 'feel' smart and at least create the illusion their winners, going somewhere in life for a few years.
