Nile, after all, is a fundamentalist Christian social conservative (he isn't an economic conservative though - he's hardly in favour of free markets either).

Actually I mostly agree with him ... with the exception of focusing on what men could have done for women. But yeah, just fleeing/surving shouldn't get you any award ... it's a wrong time wrong place situation. Heroic acts should get rewards, even if they failed (as long as they were not scatterbrained). And wouldn't it be nice if a woman got an award for heroic behavior by disabling/killing a terrorist?

(And somehow I can't stop wondering ... what would have happened if the people in Paris -- different scenario from Australia, I know -- who recorded the terrorists had had guns ... would it have made the situation worse, or would it have ended it immediately?)

To play hero is a choice not a obligation. How many of them has a family and kids to look for?. A father main obligation is within the people he's responsible. To play hero without proper training, can bring more disaster than help in a hostage situation. But then again, politicians can all play to be generals after the battle from their comfortable chairs.

Ok. It physically hurts me, and this is why:

I kind of agree with the dude.

Simple reasoning:

Bravery is codewords for stupidity that happened to have worked. Lets not paint shit like "But it's also brave to have run away", because that is smart. it has its own rewards. Clinically speaking, bravery is defined as not taking the smart and relatively safe solutrion, but instead taking a gamble that could just as well have killed them.

The notion that men have to be brave, or that men have a higher standart of bravery required then women, is in and of itself hostile and toxic. It trains men to put theoir lives at risk for women who would not give them the time of day otherwise.

What I do not agree with is 2 things:

To give bravery medals for dying in a terrorist situation. Simply put, it falls into the same kategory as "what do you need a medal for? ". They died in a trerrorist attack. They got killed, snuffed out, whatever you prefer. They did not show bravery. It is not something that you can later tell your children. It is simply and utterly a failure. It is like going, ok, I know your son / dauhter / child / fiancee / sibling / ect died, we failed to do anything about it, here's a worthless piece of junk. I have nothing against handing it out to the policemen and / or the swat team who finally resolved this. Fuck it, they need some recognition. But yea, nothing whatsoever brave about simply dying...
the context about "well, they could have done more for the women ..." With feminism , we accepted that women as well as men are just as capable to show bravery, smarts, and emotion. to now go back an entire step, and claim, "Actually, women kind of do need spoecial protection, this is why men are here after all" is to go back and go, "hur hur hur, guys, you finally managed to get out of the trap, lets put yoiu straighht back in. With special regards to this: If an armchair buearaucrat thinks he has enough guts to judge bravery, a few sugestions how to propertly recognise bravery...

how about a simple exchange: Everyone who has risked their lives there gets money. Like, 5000 bucks. Would make at least more sense then to give them a 50 cent piece of tin.

Yes, in australia, they are legal. after all, they risked their lives for total strangers, might as well get some sex out of it as a thank you. Taking some sort of action would be indicative of bravery, running for your life or dying without putting up a fight is not. He's saying that if they had tried to save the hostages and "protect the women" that would be cause for a bravery award. I agree with him. It's not about men protecting women it's about the fact that they didn't do anything brave and shouldn't get an award for it then.

Reading this I agree with his sentiment but not with the way he's expressing it.

Edit: I should clarify.

He's saying the hostages who escaped shouldn't qualify for the award, because he doesn't believe it meets the criteria for the award ( that alone doesn't) but he uses men in his sexist example (bad example and poor attitude) . He does say they deserve recognition for what they have been through.
