I see a ton of folks staying you HAVE TO get an attorney, and I want to believe that it's worth the money. I also want to believe that my wife and I are civil enough to work through this. We have kids (11, 15, 17), a sizable house, and about 1M in retirement/savings. She spent most of our 20 years together as a stay-at-home mom to take care of the kids, which made a huge difference in the people they became/are becoming.

For those that profess the value of an attorney, what differences does/did it make?

Edit #1 for clarity's sake: I have no desire for either of us to get screwed in this whole deal. I have never done this and hope to never do it again, so this is my one chance to get it right. Given that I'm a rookie, it seems like the only responsible thing to do is get some professional help.

Edit #2: Thanks so much for the thoughtful responses. I look forward to being able to help in this subreddit as all of you have.

Edit #3: As you all predicted, just a day after talking about the financial future after our divorce, the tone changed. For all that pushed to just get a lawyer, thanks!

Thanks, in advance, from a fellow redditor struggling to figure all of this out...
