He gets it. But what sucks is that his fans don't. The satire and art behind stuff like this is lost on them. They don't know how to read it, so they see this as just relatable misogyny and laugh.

I saw a thread on reddit about the white women's Instagram song. People in there literally said that the "give a hug and kiss to dad" lyric was the "funniest joke" in the special because it meant the actual "twist" was that the girl hadn't lost anyone, they were alive and well. She had just moved away and was spoiled, over exaggerating and looking for attention. And people commented about how they knew so many girls like that. Like...huh? How could you even take it that way? And of course the most popular comments were just shitting on women. I know I shouldn't expect a discussion on reddit about insight into the humanity of young women, but since all these neckbeards are calling Bo a genius I foolishly thought maybe they got it. They don't get it, they're just parroting that because they're marveling at how well he captured women's tropes. To them, the joke is that white women are ridiculous. There's some critique of white women in that song. As a white woman myself I can see that it's well deserved criticism because it's poking subtly at cultural appropriation and not shutting up and "getting out of the way". But overall that song is NOT making fun of women, it is shining a light on disassociation, collective pain, and the ways we express, comfort and heal ourselves. It's humanizing. It amazes me that people interpret it through a misogynist lens despite how carefully presented it is.

I like Bo, I like this poem, I think he has a rare type of emotional intelligence and has the ability to actually understand women. But his fans are horrible and will never get it.

BO is using his platform to draw attention the sexism and in this specific poem about women just being used.... maybe we have to add more context in those post so u don’t automatically go into attack mode... be wary but he is at least with this having good intentions...

Bo is a feminist. His female fans get his comedy, I think half of the men don’t. I wasn’t a fan of his until I saw Eighth Grade, then Promising Young Woman, and last but not least Inside. He’s an ally.

I think most people laugh at “White Woman’s Instagram” for the wrong reasons. I really do think it’s genius. He’s poking fun at social media/aesthetic tropes of “basic” white women and then flips it on its head by humanizing the white woman. I was so impressed.

Also, (not a white woman) but it pisses me off how much shit women get for liking nice & cute things.

Bo Burnham is definitely someone who you can see change and grow through the output in his career. There are some early jokes he made in his teen year YouTube videos and even his earliest Netflix special when he was 23 that are...not the best, but by his last stand up special and his newest one you can tell he’s very much matured as a person.

The biggest example of how this guy is great at listening and respecting the experience of others, especially women, is his writing/directorial debut Eighth Grade, which made me bawl with how real and vulnerable it was.

As someone new to Bo I have read through the comments and I read the poem with an emphasis on "my," reading, "MY" instead of "my" with a heavy tone, and the last line read with a chuckle.

I can't say why he wrote it or what his goal was but what I take from it is a spotlight on the myriad of ways men use and continue to use (while mocking) women. And at the end it is wrapped up in a tiny laugh bow of "Classic me" aka You do all of this, and I am just me. And that's expected and no one cares I don't contribute, use you, and bring nothing.

But, things can be interpreted in many ways that's the way I see this one.

I was a fan of him when I was around 15 but now that I am in my early 20's and I'm having a second look at it all it's just been disappointing tbh. It's so weird to realize how much my mindset has changed since then but it is definitely for the better.
