Nope! I’ve lived internationally and this is really common, but not for good reasons. Before, I indulged because I thought it was a good way to avoid catfishing. What ended up happening is that I had a bunch of online “satellites.” They see it as a way to vet your looks for casual sex, and feel no obligation to ask you out. Will stalk your stories, react, breadcrumb you and waste your time texting forever because they have no intention of getting to know you- they just want to beef-up their social media for clout and to access Hot Girl TV. They’re guaranteed to have a bunch of random women on their page.

This is an instant block/delete. Guys who are genuinely interested in a relationship wouldn’t give their insta to a bunch of girls who are strangers. Don’t explain it to them or say “Oh I don’t give my insta to strangers 🤗 hehe.” They will just think you’re secretly fat/old/ whatever scrotes are afraid of- and waste your time until they find out what they need to find out. You have been sorted into the “use for sex” pile either way. It’s not worth it.

You can phone and video call through all the apps here. I used to give out my whatsapp when they asked but got sick of the ‘good morning’ texts, so when they asked me for my whatsapp I instead pretended I thought they meant to call me and said ‘sure would love a phone chat - can you call me or video me on this app?’. They would agree but get all shifty and be busy and book a time in the future then fail to call or be shit shows in other ways. Always thought it odd that they didn’t want to video call. Surely that’s the best way to not be catfished. I’m not comfortable with video calls either but better that than an in person date with someone you don’t fancy. Sunshine Daisies is right - we should just block/delete if they ask for whatsapp without asking for a phone call. In fact come off the apps is the best advice because all the guys on them are low effort/married/entitled misogynists - you may not get any dates but your life will be scrotefree💅

Hold your boundaries and let the trash take itself out. Most men looking for Instagram or WhatsApp contacts are just orbiters and might hit you up in six months with a "wyd?" message at 11pm. Nothing will actually come of it and you absolutely don't have to audition with scrotes who probably use alt insta accounts for porn.

There was a thread about this earlier today. Absolutely do NOT give them your phone number or personal details they can use to identify you before meeting and vetting them!

Tell them you want to stay on the app until you’ve actually met them. If they refuse or push.. well then you know that it’s time to take the trash out. Block and delete.

I have two instas - a public and a private. I'm in a sort of PR job so it's quite important for me to interact with people in my industry and influencers on this platform and I only put very banal photos on it- ones to do with my job or things like scenery etc. My private one is where I share my selfies, pics of my home, my family etc. It's also under a nickname that only close friends call me so it's harder to find. I don't give out my private insta to anyone except real friends and family, but if someone wanted to find my public one there's not much that isn't up for grabs info anyway, so maybe that's a solution?

I wouldn't ever give out whatsapp until you have done some in person vetting. Difficult to truly block once they have your number in case you decide you don't want to see them again.

Guys ask for IG because they want to waste your time. Oh, and they’re not that interested because they add all girls they meet and decide later who they actually attracted to and often shoot waaay above their league and make backup plans of other girls (for sex). He will be lukewarm at best. I say I don’t have social media or my insta is for family only and I don’t need followers. If they try to push it or make fun of you - block/delete, he is NOT interested in you in romantic way.

I've had this happen to me a lot back when I was OLD, all the guys kept asking for my phone number, instagram or to use other messaging apps. Its frustrating they can't just utilize the dating app chat for a while first (if they are actually serious about dating that is). I know better now to not give out my socials.

I just read an article on the dangers of OLD in my area and apparently some of the men who ask for your number are salesmen hoping to send ads to you on Whatsapp. Other users here said they wanted your number to stalk you or continue harassing you after you blocked one of their numbers.

Just remember what other queens here have posted: men will wank to anything, and I'd bet quite a few of them are looking for wank material anywhere they can find it. Doesn't matter if you're not a thirst trap. Any picture of your face and/or body, they will use. I'd never give this out. I'm the one behind the camera, and quite honestly use my Insta to post Pokemon Go brag pics, but still.

I wouldn't even add a scrote to my Pogo nick, because when you send gifts, it shows city and state. I don't want a man to know where I live.

It's a manipulation tactic. They say their motivation to ask for WhatsApp/Instagram is to 'get to know you better': you can best get to know someone in an IRL meeting.

If it's to 'peak their interest': that's what your OLD profile was for. If they're checking for catfish (legit), there's a million different ways to do that apart from WhatsApp and Instagram.

Conclusion: their reasons are deception. They have a hidden agenda which they do not wish to reveal. Such as: fap material, bragging rights, ways to cyber stalk and harass you, ways to fake intimacy, ways to hide your existence from a pre-existing SO or other dates, etc.
