The absolute bare minimum, and an automatic dealbreaker. NEVER, no matter the circumstance. Do not ever let a man think that it is justifiable to try to physically intimidate you. There exists not a single excuse for violent behaviour. It will always escalate.

What I posted versus a reason for a permaban from a large “feminist” subreddit. Wow I wonder why :)

“Women like you give feminism bad name” shut up - effective feminism always had a “bad name.”

Not only does this pathetic Slate.com author try to argue that violent pornography decreases the number of rape, but goes on to joke that maybe rapists are just busy browsing their website or finding love on their sponsored dating site. I'm going to throw up.

I’m not gonna ask on relationship advice subs to get gaslit, I’ll ask here if allowed. Do you think I should leave because he didn’t stand up for me, or is it trauma?

If you want to physically hurt women, just buy some pathetic excuse of consent, say it's a kink thing and get away with it apparently.

yep, i’m done. notice they will never act this way to their friends or male peers. just us.

To me men with anger issues are so unnatractive, the look like overgrown children that are throwing tantrums.

Like I get it you're mad, I'd probably be to, but do your really have to start huffing and puffing, screaming, or punching things beacuse you didn't have it your way? Bye boy.

Yea, men with anger issues are like an awful teenager (at best).

[–]bioqueen53FDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not even. I don't know any teenage girl that will tolerate this

Sad af straight women have to have such bare minimums. Do men have to have bare minimums like that? If I was a man, I doubt the first question my mom would ask when finding out we're dating is if she is any way abusive. She asks me that bc my dad used to have major anger issues and so does my brother in law.

Indeed. As someone said, “the definition of a bad date for a man is that he doesn’t get laid. The definition of a bad date for a woman is that she gets raped or murdered.” We live in different words.

Love is respect.

When I was leaving my NVM, another person told me: “Well, he may love you. But that is going to kill you.”

Or, a poet wrote this about abusive relationships: “He does love you. He loves you hurt. And he will do it again.”

Abuse is abuse. Do not tolerate.

These actions are absolutely meant to intimidate you and bully you into submission. But, it’s sort of like, you don’t really understand what’s going on in the moment? You’ve seen them act in a completely different way and you have to force yourself to realize that everything up to that point was fake and was not the real him

  • my ex was super aggressive and controlling but it never really hit until he was driving wildly, screaming and punching his phone because I had refused to speak with him for a few days. We met up and this is what happened. I’ve never been so scared. Yet, I forgave him. I thought it was a one off but I know now (I’ve since dumped him) that it was his true nature.

[–]ultblue7FDS Newbie 29 points30 points31 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This. My ex was red in the face with anger while he broke up with me and my brain and body was so conflicted. Like who are you? I simultaneously felt fear, the need to comfort him, sadness, anger, betrayal, and love. I don’t know how to trust anyone anymore.

[–]thinktwiceorelseFDS Newbie 38 points39 points40 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not even in a "playful" way.

[–]FineDeliciousSnakesFDS Newbie 31 points32 points33 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

An ex “playfully” wound up to punch me. I immediately told him it was unacceptable and to leave. Daily I am so happy to never be there again

[–]dinarvand88FDS Newbie 156 points157 points158 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes I had an ex who was like this. (He never hit me but I can relate to him blocking my path and raising his voice at me. ) Ever notice these people often only seem to have "anger problems" at us? That they don't ever seem to break things or throw things they personally value? It's deliberate. They're not "out of control" or they'd charge into walls rather than at women and they'd break their own stuff every once in awhile.

Next time, I’m leaving at the first sign of any aggression. I get that it’s normal to experience anger, but I’d rather my partner left the room and calmed down before discussing things than yelled at me.

This was a very tricky thing I had to deal with in my last relationship because I grew up being physically disciplined and screamed at on the regular. It was like any other day. My adapted response also made me more likely to freeze or fawn and try to make things work because it’s literally what I STILL DO with my family. My ex was never physically violent (outside of “kinky” sex...whole other thing to unpack) but towards the end he showed small instances of loss of control. And I froze. I froze and tried to tell myself to just let it go like I do with my family. Reanalyzing my behavior after my breakup, I am shocked and scared to realize how casual it is for me to accept aggression because it has been the number one reason for me to distance myself from my family and now I realize I almost perpetuated the cycle. I’m honestly so lucky I didn’t end up staying in that relationship and am now aware of my behavior and working on it.

Due to all toxicity I grew up with, if I catch even a whiff of it from someone in a dating context I am gone. Usually said whiff shows itself before a date ever happens or on the first date in my experience. I’m less easily offended by things that offend regular people out in the world though, so I do have to ask coworkers and friends for a second opinion on certain things that I’m like “This seems a bit weird, but I don’t know if it is truly improper.”

[–]ultblue7FDS Newbie 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Can I ask what are some indicators for you? Quite honestly, I don’t know what to look for and I’m not putting myself out there until I build tools to protect myself. My ex moved very fast to asking me out and was very gentlemanly during our first date, apart from a surprise kiss at the end. I guess one thing that should have been a red flag was him not really getting to know me beforehand which I chalked up to just wanting to check in person chemistry.

[–]SayNadFDS Disciple 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My ex moved very fast to asking me out

Was that fastness comfortable to you or you are pushed into accepting? If pushed, red flag.

very gentlemanly during our first date, apart from a surprise kiss at the end

He violated your boundaries, red flag. HVM ask for consent, in every single little thing.

was him not really getting to know me beforehand which I chalked up to just wanting to check in person chemistry.

That means he doesn't care about you, red flag. HVM who are genuinely into you will have at least a general idea about you, what you do, what kind of date you prefer etc. Dates is for getting to know you deeper - no meeting literal stranger with 0 knowledge.

Even in arranged meetups there will be general info presented to both sides so they have something to talk about - it is just common sense.

And I am sure you can realize more and more small red flags peppered throughout when you sit down and really think about it.

[–]valleycupcakeFDS Newbie 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Me too. I’ve done so much work to break the cycle and be a peaceful parent. And I screw up all the time. Good for you recognizing what was going on and not allowing it to continue.

Thank you-I feel like it was more subconscious shutting down due to constantly putting myself into the presence of someone that was triggering me. He actually ended it but looking back has been so enlightening in seeing the way my body was trying to protect me. I have made the conscious choice to not contact him ever again which I am proud of. Congratulations on being a parent ❤️ and much respect to you for working on that for your children.

Zero tolerance to any kind of emotional, physical, financial, destroying objects, whatever type of abuse or aggression. Leave at the first sign. But not just against you. Even if he treats you "well" but shows aggressive or abusive behaviour towards exes, family members, children or workers at shops and restaurants, leave at the first sign. You're saving your life and possible offspring's lives. The sooner you leave, the easier will it be to untangle from this person and the less repercussions you'll have. Don't let it get to the point where you're baby trapped or house trapped.

My dad is the calmest, sweetest man. Never raised his voice at me or anyone in my family in his life. I was shocked the other day when he said he had been in a bad mood the past week, but because he is so sweet to me I barely noticed. Whenever he is annoyed at me, he just shakes his head. My mum is the same. Calm and so patient.

My ex on the other hand, even though he never really raised his voice and never hit me, would say the cruellest things when he was angry. Just utterly horrible things. He would blame it on his anger and self control, but people know what they're doing when they cross those lines and they do it on purpose.

When we moved in together, he would threaten to move out after every argument, leaving me in a lurch. It made me so angry that eventually I told him, calmly, next time he threatens that, it's final and he is leaving. 'Lo and behold, he never ever threatened it again. Proving he is perfectly capable of self control.

I have my father's (and my mothers tbh) sweet and calm temperament and I want the same in a partner. Absolute zero tolerance for even snappiness. I don't want someone who is merely non-violent, I want someone actively gentle and kind and I think that id the bare minimum.

[–]ButterfliesHurricaneFDS Newbie 76 points77 points78 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

The punching walls is a less obvious sign but it’s a definite red flag. Don’t ask me how I know…..

[–]LonchuraStriataFDS Newbie 34 points35 points36 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Same goes for slamming his fist on the table when he gets angry or otherwise upset.

[–]ButterfliesHurricaneFDS Newbie 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes thats another one. The aggression is there, they try to contain it but sooner or later they slip

[–]LonchuraStriataFDS Newbie 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It tells me that their first instinct when upset is "I want to hit something"/"I want to express my anger physically" and that can easily be turned against another person.

Fudge. I think this post just made me confront issues in my own relationship. He’s lovely when in a good mood, but get him upset and the name calling, raising voice, calling me weak, unworthy of respect, brainless and batshit crazy starts…if I cry, he tells me I’m weak and dramatic, when I try walk away he threatens that if i leave we are over, or he will block the exit….these are all things my mother used to do too!! Thank you for this timely post, it seems silly but it actually forced me to take all of it into account.

Hope you see he will never change and it is impossible to grow and blossum with someone who is committed to misunderstanding you and knocking you down.

You dont need a bully in your own home. Realize how weak he is and take your power back. What a toddler he is. My mom used to be the same way.

Trying to gain acceptance from the abusive person. I transferred that onto my partner with anger problems. He would never accept me though, and he wad destroying me. So I had to leave him and grow.

Just stick with us. I found my last joirnal entry from Jan 2020 about how I wanted to leave him... he moved out around end of September. Its been hard but the peace feels like nothing else Ive ever felt.

And knowing that he is weak. And I am not.

I had kids with mine. Just yesterday I went to go take my car back from my ex’s street and he punched the window right in front of my friend who was helping me. And then ex called police on me and tried to say I’m stealing it while calling me stupid and crazy. Sheriff was having none of it but stayed to make sure I was safe. It doesn’t get better. If I was going to ignore all the red flags, I wish I would’ve at least left at the first sign of contempt rather than go through years of pointless counseling. In my life there’s been no going back once a relationship reaches that point.

Any sign of aggression when angry: aggressive driving, flipping people off, throwing tools or object in anger (even if not at you).

Men do not have to hurt to to keep your behavior in check with fear tactics. They just have to be scary and intimidating, so you think they MIGHT hurt you. And then they waltz around like “but I never hit you”.

We need to redefine what violent relationships are.
