The Truth About Women in the Bible

As someone raised casual Jewish, I never understood the “popular Christian” I saw on TV, movies, and later when I moved to the Bible Belt for college. Everything they know comes from a man in a church, not from their own reading of the Bible.

As an academian, I approached the Bible in college with an analytic mind. Christians I’ve met throughout my life will quote a piece of the Bible (usually incorrectly or out of context) and then when I bring up something like the mixing of fabrics in clothing as a sin, they say it doesn’t apply or isn’t literal.

Weren’t there also women who wrote but their works were removed from the Bible? If you know more, please share!

I find it interesting that Eve is presented as the human who took the fruit first and shared it with Adam, thereby initiating The Fall. Why her and not him? It's not like there's a ton of character development explaining this. Did the writer (or God, depending on how you believe it) just flip a coin, or was there an intent to make an example of Eve as a curious woman who wanted more than she had?

It seems like such a simple, innocent story, but I'm skeptical that it actually is.

My religion only recognized the New Testament for their rules and considered the Bible kind of like "history of how Jesus ended up fixing it all". Rules from the Bible were overridden by the NT. And Jesus didn't like the merchants, helped the poor, suggested men gauge their own eyes to manage the lust they felt and otherwise advocated for everyone to be full of love for everyone. I'm agnostic now that I'm an adult, but I honestly don't understand how people go from a text that says "love is the answer" and turn it into a multi million dollars machine of hate.

The men of the older times also threw books out of the bible which were written by women to diminish their importance and power. There is a book of Mary-Magdelene in the apocrypha.

There are like 5-7 books that are not in the bible. I prefer Lilith, in my personal opinion. Also, Have you noticed they have called most of the women in the book whores, seductresses, sirens, etc. but the men....crickets. Now that I'm older I take religion with a grain of salt and guess who translated these books..............priests (men) so yea.

I love Jesus, he's the true HVM 🙏 he has such a tender heart. God led me here to this group of strong women who built up my self-esteem after I made a plea in prayer that he help me heal mentally. I believe in the God who loves all of us equally, men and women, as children made in his own image.

I go to a large women's group every week instead of church, we're all spread out in tables in the main church room and it's just like normal church with praise+worship, prayer in the back, and a sermon. I've grown to love my table, they're such kindhearted women and we encourage each other, not afraid to cry in front of each other or to be honest if we're having a bad day.

It's just the kind of fellowship I've always wanted. I hope all of you can find fellowship like that too! Some churches just don't feel 'right'; keep looking, not all churches truly follow God in the way he wants. In fact I know of one in my area that has been damaging to several women in my group.

I always like to remember that when Jesus was resurrected, he chose to reveal himself to women, not even his disciples. He didn’t have to, but I like to think it’s because they were more capable of handling the event and actually going into action letting people know rather than sitting there, paralyzed with fear like most men today who watch modern horror movies...

Just to add some points-

Also, after God made each thing in the Bible, He said it was good. After making man, God was like it's not good for man to be alone. Basically as much as they hate it, they need us. We don't need them.

Christian husbands are supposed to die for their wives. Not the other way around.

I think the fact that the Bible says if you look at a woman with lust, you've committed adultery. No excuses can be made for men thirsting over women who are not their wife.

This is a lot of mental gymnastics. I did the same growing up in the Muslim community trying to justify that abrahamic religions are actually feminist.

When in reality, it is quite the opposite.

I mean i thought the same thing as you. Real Islam is feminist. Men corrupted present day Islam. Then I thought: Well why did god let such a thing happen then? If he cared about women?

So now I don’t think that anymore. It’s always been anti women. Modern, original, and otherwise. In every century, by and large benefiting men.

Many moons ago, I advocated for this perspective of women to be understood by my Church and was promptly slandered, defamed, emotionally abused, and kicked out. Modern-day Church is everything they claim to be against: hateful, abusive, unaccepting, judgmental, unforgiving.

This is very interesting. I have conducted the same kind of research regarding Islam and Quran and sort of came to the same conclusions. The majority of the verses from the Quran that men use to justify the “natural submission to men by women” is plain bullsh*t and was entirely misinterpreted by men. They go as far as depicting Heaven as a place where men will have access to dozens of VIRGIN (of course) women and have orgies literally all the time... while obviously none of this is true. It disgusts me.

Weren't both Adam and Lilith created together but she denied him and then that led to Eve? And I feel like Eve also has connotations of power dynamics, because she comes from his rib, so she is both God's daughter and Adam's daughter.

But your point on the culture being the reason for these ideologies is very important. People forget where and when these texts were written and they can't adapt them to real world relevance or even critique them.

God made us Humankind (Ha’Adam). He did not make us man and woman, he made us human. Ok yea, Genesis 2, wasn't woman made from the rib of man? No, God made woman from the rib of Ha'Adam and the word is plural

Isn't this splitting hairs tho? Because it is pretty well recognized that humankind really referred to men and that woman is other because she was created from the rib of Adam. Whether we call him human kind or just man. The original intention was that Eve was to be a helper to Adam and set up the whole idea that women exist to serve men.

I have to say the funniest part of Genesis is how fast Adam throws Eve under the bus.
