I'm tired of the pornsick masses dismissing every porn-critical viewpoint as being crazy religious fundamentalists. I'm the furthest thing from a God-fearing Christian and I can still see how disgusting and depraved the porn industry is. And many of these dismissals are coming from the USA, which last I checked doesn't forbid its citizens from believing in God.

Growing up I thought "oh religious groups are anti-abortion, anti-contraceptives, and they're also anti-porn... of course because they don't want women to be in control of their bodies". Turns out, you can dislike both: Organized religion and mass pornography! Both treat women like shit.

This man's University should be ashamed. He clearly has no understanding of addiction. Let's look at the first sentence, but take out porn:

"What if the problem with frequent or problematic 'X' use was not the behavior itself, but how you, your partner, your religion and the culture around you judged it?"

And replaced it with alcohol, drugs, gambling, etc. It sounds absolutely ridiculous. The definition of addiction is when something interferes with your life. It doesn't have to be a physical need to be addictive, like a drug. Because the dopamine produced in the brain is a drug which is addictive in and of itself. If someone is distressed because of an activity that they are doing, that's a problem. It doesn't matter if you only spend $10 a week playing the lotto- if you don't have $10 a week that's a problem. If your behaviour hurts yourself or someone else, it's a problem.

Hes demonizing religion. In my Catholic premarital counseling we were told sex is good in relationships. Porn is looked down upon because it is harmful to relationships. How is that hard for this man to understand? He's devoted his research life to justifying the horrors of pornography, and ceiling it as academia. It's incredible.

You know they bring up this thing that religious communities are fighting porn and frankly I've just never seen what like the Catholic Church run an organization to fight porn...? Notice they never mention actual groups just this Boogeyman of the evil church people coming after them. "There are totally groups! they totally exist! But um..... we can't name them for...um... reasons."

The other point of pretending it's religious people coming after them is to pretend no one else has a problem with porn. It's just another way to silence women. All the women that are being raped and beaten because of this hate speech against women that is porn. Has a lot in common with calling women prudes when they won't put out on men's terms.

As a substance use disorder/addiction counsellor, I often work with men who have been “diagnosed” (by external sources) with porn addiction in addition to substance use disorders. However, we use the DSM-5 which does not include porn or even sex as addictions. It would seem that calling their use of porn (or engaging in sexual infidelity, etc) an addiction allows men to have an excuse for their behaviour. To be fair, there are certainly people I work with who have multiple maladaptive coping strategies, such as porn or sex, but that does not equate addiction. By leaning on such an idea, it essentially gives these men (and women who engage in it) an “excuse” for their behaviour because addiction is a disease. So, to be clear, in circumstances in which there is clinically significant impairment in a person’s functioning due to maladaptive coping strategies, I will endeavour to provide effective strategies to assist. However, it is a challenge for me when it is primarily men who blame NVM behaviour on an addiction that does not technically exist (based on my tools for diagnosing) to justify their behaviour.

I mean, I don't think there's an actual lobby paying him to write, that's a risky accusation that makes the twitter account look conspiracy-theory-ish.

It may be that this individual writer doubts the legitimacy of porn addiction. He can be wrong about that AND also not be paid by a lobby. Lots of people, men in particular, don't feel like there's anything wrong with porn already - it doesn't take someone to pay them to defend their own habits.
