Hello lovely people,

I am trying to become a more assertive woman, because I feel that will help me in many aspects of my life, including work, everyday interactions and of course dealing with males that do things such as mansplain or generally act like entitled assholes.

I think that because being assertive is so alien to me due to naturally being quite a passive person, and socialised to be that way, that I have been going about it the wrong way and actually acting nasty :( I think I hold a lot of anger from being naive and putting up with very bad behaviour in the past.

Last night I went out for drinks with some friends, and a male (who is married by the way) was acting very handsy with my friend (she comes across as very submissive and I have witnessed men take advantage of this), he was holding her hand, touching her arm etc. And I felt an instant rage and said across the table "aren't you married, how would your wife feel??". The thing is, I wouldn't let it go until I felt I had really made him feel like shit. There was also a women there who has been very horrible to me in the past, and has called me dumb and stupid among other nasty comments (I usually avoid her and didn't know she was attending the drinks), and she made a snidey comment to me and I could not stop being nasty to her, to the point I created quite a bad vibe and may have ruined the night.

I would really appreciate tips on how to be assertive without acting like I did last night. I feel very bad about my behaviour, but I also want to be strong and do the right thing when people are behaving disrespectfully.

Edit: I wanted to thank you all for the wonderful advice, I really love this place and the supportive women here! One of my friends from that night just messaged me saying that she is proud of me for how I was and admires that I'm becoming more assertive and wishes to be like that too 😄 time to get more more sisters on board I say 🙌
