I’ve read a lot from women on this site and social media in general that drug use is generally a huge no when it comes to screening a man for an LTR, so here’s a scenario for you all to ponder:

Let’s say you’re dating a new guy, and it’s been going good for about 3-6 months. You’ve been on dates, had sex, the whole shebang. You’re very happy with this guy, but there’s one issue: he’s a drug addict. Not like a stoner, but a hard drug addict, addicted to heroin, cocaine, speed, benzodiazepines, etc, perhaps a polyaddict. He was successfully hiding the fact he was an addict for several months, but you find the drugs or paraphernalia, or you find him acting strangely, nodding out at dinner, eyes rolling into the back of his head, or slurring his speech.

You confront him about what his problem is, and he confesses that he’s been addicted to snorting and smoking heroin (that way there would be no visible track marks). He’s not completely broke, or homeless, but the possibility that his addiction could take him there is always on the table.

What do you decide to do from here? If you really love him and have formed a bond with him, do you try and stick it out with him, under the condition he gets sober, do you break up with him immediately, or the wild card: you reveal that you are a user as well and continue the relationship by using drugs with him?

And as an alternate scenario, imagine this guy is already your ex-boyfriend, and you’ve been broken up with him for a couple years. You still think about him, so you decide to give him a phone call or FaceTime to catch up, and to your surprise, he reveals rather candidly that he is a drug user, and talks about the issues the drugs have caused him such as overdosing, having a heart attack, seizure, etc. In spite of the health issues the drugs have caused him, he continues to use anyways, going so far as to snort a line of an unspecified substance on FaceTime. what are your immediate thoughts on him knowing this? Do you feel disgusted? Excited that you have a potential plug? Or do you feel sympathy for him, and wonder if you breaking up with him hurt him so bad he tries to drown out his broken heart in drugs, and feel bad for doing so?
