The overwhelming majority of highly confident people are, in my experience, confident without commensurate achievement. This is the result of a culture that has prized and venerated confidence as the sine qua non of personality traits.

The sum total of this way of thinking has been to create a society of used-car salesmen personalities; confident with no accreditation at best, literal liars at worst. You see this obsession with confidence everywhere in society. You see it everywhere in the workplace. You see it in people's inability to ever properly consensus build. In the realm of dating it's even worse, men are encouraged implicitly or explicitly to be confidence tricksters, to talk themselves up at every opportunity, to inflate their achievements, to play it fast and loose with the truth, to be smooth rather than genuine.

Perhaps rather than confidence, we should emphasize humility as a healthy trait men should possess? All of the genuinely high performing men I've met in my field are humble first and foremost.

Note. I'm not encouraging social awkwardness, one can be both humble and prosocial.
