Wheels vs Doors Mega-Thread

There was a debate about this in another group I talk in... I guess it must be a meme lol.

I'll say the same thing there as I did here. In order to progress the debate, you need to define what is a door and what is a wheel because without an agreement on semantics, the debate devolves into arguing over what should and shouldn't be included so it becomes impossible to come to a final count when the target is constantly moving.

In my case, the first thing I thought of when I was posed the question was wheels on a vehicle granting movement for humans and doors attached to a structure which grant or block access. So doorways without doors don't count... The wheels debate is interesting because you think of things like wheelbarrows, file cabinets, shopping carts, skateboards, and furniture and it becomes tricky on where to draw the line.

From this frame of reference, I chose to include a wheel as anything created by humans designed to grant movement, thus I say there are more wheels but I think there can be valid arguments made for both sides depending on what people agree should and shouldn't be included. Like should the door on a kitchen shelf be a door in that case? What about a zipper? Or a lid on a trash can? Or a transistor?

I want to mention that there was a lot of debate on semantics in my other group prior to agreeing on this definition. We started arguing about how a wheel is something you could roll something on, so a ball bearing could be considered a wheel. If we abstract further, any round object is a wheel so even an atom, or the components of an atom are wheels so all doors are comprised of many atoms/wheels meaning there are more wheels.

On the flip side, if a door is considered as something which grants or blocks access to something, and if a door made of glass which you can see through is still considered a door, then forces invisible to the human eye such as electromagnetic fields and gravity could be considered doors in this context.

Because differing frequencies of voltage or angular momentum can be utilized to control access for various objects, each respective frequency could be considered a door.

Since there are infinite possible frequencies, and it wasn't specified that a door or wheel need to remain permanent, an simple analog signal created from turning on and off an electronic device creates more possible 'doors' than there exist atoms in the universe and there many are such signals occurring all around us constantly.

1 electron jumping between atoms creates an infinite number of vectors from magnetic flux, each of which can serve as a force to grant or deny access of a small object.

From this perspective its definitely doors that outnumber wheels.

So Google says there’s 8 more people than cars. Cars have at least 5 wheels, maybe 9 (winter and spare) and 2-5 doors usually but most have 4 or five. Lets say 2 doors and 9 wheels. That makes it 710⁹ more wheels than cars + 210⁹ for bikes (Google). That means there has to be 9 doors extra per person. Seems a bit too much but considering i lowballed car doors and high the wheels its anyones ball game.

Tbh my guess is avg. 4 doors and 7 wheels per car. That puts us in (including bikes) 5 extra doors per person which seems reasonable. (Add 1 extra door per person if you count motorbike, just don’t have the energy to edit the text)

Conclusion: I have no answer and whatever it is it’s close

OBS this is real doors and wheels, not counting balls, gears, windows and cabinets because it’s impossible and to everyone that says cabinets are doors: what are you gonna enter to? The shelf yea shure. Trunks are doors because you can enter into the car, they are not doors if it’s a Wall between the trunk and seats therefore cabinets aren’t doors because you can’t enter anything g through them

Any device that can allow something through or be closed to not allow it through is in essence a door. So..a switch is a door. Idk...how many doors are in the average phone? Do I count what's in microchips?

I think you can see what direction I am going with this. Doors...by such a huge margin you shouldn't even have the slightest doubt.

I can’t get past the fact that many wheels are consumables, i.e: must be disposed and replaced. Most doors are one and done. I feel the pure might of capitalism would propel wheels into the lead.

I’ve been thinking about the definition of a door. I think in the most general sense it’s an object that can change its state to block the entry to a defined space. But the object must be somehow connected to the defined space.

So here is my question: is the mouth a door?
The lower jaw (object) can move (change its state) to block the entry to the body/digestive system (defined space). It’s also attached to the skull/body.

Commercial Spaces: Most stores and warehouses have dollies, hand trucks, and push carts to move inventory. Every office has tons of cubicles and conference rooms with chairs with 5 wheels apiece. Hospital beds have wheels. Shopping carts at big box stores. Hotel rooms have desk chairs in them too. Schools are probably one of the few places with more doors

Residential Spaces: I'm guessing the average person has like 8 drawers to themselves (dresser + nightstand)? At 4 wheels per drawer, that's 32 wheels per person. If the avg household has 3 ppl, that's 96 wheels. But not all drawers have wheels, okay. Let's say average household has 25 doors (Front, Baths, Bedrooms, closets, cabinets, cupboards). That means if at least ~25% of all drawers in the world are wheeled, there's more wheels than doors per household.

Vehicles are kind of moot. Passenger cars have 6 doors (counting hood and trunk) and 5 wheels (spare tire), but then you have trucks with 4 doors and more than 4 wheels touching the ground so I'll call that a breakeven.
