Jesus christ, so I Googled to find out more about this since I'm just now hearing about it. This one article has so many frustrating statements in it.

“The torture, repeated rape, and humiliation that would face female POWs would be unthinkable"

"but male POWs are just fine with this shit, no biggie."

“My daughters talk about serving. My son talks about serving, but I don’t want to put my daughters in a place where they have to get drafted.”

"But fuck my son tho"

[–][deleted] 60 points61 points62 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

yes. "it's ok if a male soldier is beheaded with a dull knife but oh no, females shouldnt have to face those things, men are women are equal!" all in the same breath.

If POWs get tortured and beaten, eventually some of the abusers will go rapey. What do you think, there are only 100% heterosexuals guards?

[–]Taladar 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't even think homo- or heterosexuality plays into it that much. Rape it primarily about power in many cases, not so much about sexual attraction.

[–]faded_jester 410 points411 points412 points 10 years ago (75 children) | Copy Link

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone paying attention. Feminists have always been very careful in the "equality" they demand. It's "equality" right up to the point of responsibility. Then it defaults to mens domain, and don't you dare acknowledge their hypocrisy, that now falls under the ever expanding definition of "sexism".

Boil it down and they want all the perks of being a woman, all the perks of being a man, the default acknowledgment of being at least equal in all regards, minus any accountability that comes with it. Only then will they declare themselves free of "oppression".

[–]sanatarian 121 points122 points123 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Or they will continually move the goal posts and always be oppressed.

[–]Waizujin25 points 10 years ago* [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

Men could literally have less rights than dogs, and they'd still be oppressed.

[–]halcyoncmdr 29 points30 points31 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I haven't seen any dogs get expelled from a school or convicted of "rape" that was later discovered to be entirely fabricated.

I'm not saying rape is ok, it's not, but there are a lot of fake rape accusations that end up with no punishment, even if the guy ends up being acquitted. If someone's name is drug through the mud based on false allegations the accuser should be punished as well, and that doesn't happen very often.

[–]Amunium -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Just to be fair, an acquittal is not the same as declaring the accuser guilty. Presumption of innocence goes for the accuser as well, and an innocent verdict for the accused simply means there wasn't enough evidence to declare him guilty, and we don't - legally - know what happened.

[–]halcyoncmdr 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

My issue is not that there is no automatic reversal, but that in these types of cases even with at least some proof of a false allegation, there is rarely a decision by the DA to try the accuser for a false allegation. They seem to love trying a "rape" case, but rarely go for a false allegation case.

[–]Amunium 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree. You just said:

there are a lot of fake rape accusations that end up with no punishment, even if the guy ends up being acquitted

I'm just saying, being acquitted doesn't imply anything more than that. If there is a false accusation, they should definitely work harder to find and prove it, but a false accusation trial not necessarily following an acquittal is nothing strange.

[–]4Sken 54 points55 points56 points 10 years ago (33 children) | Copy Link

I remember reading a /r/welding post and thinking "You have to be fucking me"

It was a legitimate situation, some contractor groped her, she complained to her boss and later found a craigslist ad for her position. That's legit, no doubt about that.

But then I read the rest of the post, and it was her talking about how she planned to enter a nicely paying permanent position, stash as much money as she could and leave to have a baby. And The whole time I was thinking, "Holy shit. She's just a liability issue for her boss who has to hire someone twice because she's quitting in a month anyways"

Three days later I was talking with some of my father's friends. Two of them are older and a bit racist and legitimately sexist. One of them was looking to hire someone for a warehouse job, and another one said "Don't hire a woman. If they're young they're gonna leave to have a baby and if they're older they're not gonna be as strong as a man anyways"

His last point was true, a 50 year old woman won't compare to a 30 year old man. I was gonna call him out for saying they'd leave to have children, but it just wouldn't have been honest to do it.

Fuck. The cognitive dissonance, mannnn

[–]benreeper 56 points57 points58 points 10 years ago (31 children) | Copy Link

As a black man, this is why black males don't get hired either. With Black Lives Matter and all of the political correctness shit we put you through, who would want to deal with that? I even wouldn't to deal with that.

Another thing that I noticed is that black people that are annoying like this usually have never any true relationships with white people, not proffesionally or personaly. My closest friends and co-workers are white. I've experienced racism but it is nothing like these

[–]TractionJackson 30 points31 points32 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Can't believe I have to say this, but thank you for being a regular human being. I’m a white guy and I’m beyond tired of the racist bullshit from both sides. The worst part is how political correctness has morphed into racism. People can defend it all they like, but when they spend all their free time time bitching about racial issues, they're being racist. Al Sharpton is the gold standard for this.

[–]halcyoncmdr 23 points24 points25 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

To quote Morgan Freeman:

"Stop talking about it. I'm going to stop calling you a white man. And I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man. I know you as Mike Wallace. You know me as Morgan Freeman. You're not going to say, "I know this white guy named Mike Wallace." Hear what I'm saying?"

That view is out of date now unfortunately. It's the same thing that happened with feminism. Both equality movements started out with noble goals, we just want to be treated the sane, we don't want to be seen as "black" or a "woman" just a person. But somewhere along the line they realized that true equality meant equal responsibility as well. It means giving up victim status and having to contribute just as much as white males. So they dropped the color/gender blindness stuff. BLM considers wanting a colorblind society, the very same Rev King spoke about, to actually be just another form of racism. Now they want to have all of the supposed privilege of whites, handouts, freebies, etc but still cling to their separate-but-more-equal culture. It's the same as feminists who want to be given a high paying corporate job because they feel white men only have those due to privilege, but no women sign up to be electrical line (wo)men, garbage collectors, or off shore oil rig workers. All the benefits, none of the responsibility or accountability. That's the new game for pretty much all equality movements. And you can be damn sure if a Christian wanted a gay baker to make a cake with a bible verse on it and the baker refused, no one would be calling for the gay baker to be shut down or forced to make the cake.

Honestly I can't think of a single minority equality movement that hasn't turned into that. You can tell by the way they all backtrack as soon as they get a taste of the responsibility side of equality. As soon as they are told they have to start putting the work in, be held accountable to the same degree for their actions, and have to start paying in instead of taking handouts, the equality talk dries up. None of them want equality. They want revenge. They want their turn making the rules and holding the whip. That's it.

[–]Revan343 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

but no women sign up to be electrical line (wo)men

There are actually a decent number of female sparkies. Still nowhere near parity, but more than a lot of trades.

[–]ManDurphies 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Are you talking about general electricians that install outlets and shit, or are you talking the people that get heli-lifted onto high voltage lines in special suits, who i think is what your comment was referring to, because if it's the second, thats really surprising

[–]Revan343 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Most sparkies I encounter are in the industrial sector, working on oil refineries. While they don't have gender parity, I'd guess it's about 25% women. My residential/comercial experience is a much smaller sample size, but pretty close to the same ratio.

I've never worked with power generation/distribution, but it's the same electrical ticket whether you're putting in outlets, pulling cable on a mod, or working for the power company, so I'd imagine there's a fair number of them working on the high voltage lines as well.

I know of a company I did contract work fora while back. they have 5 black men and 8 people of various other ethnicities.

2 of the black men were fired recently for theft. 2 are working well with no issues and are part of the team. The last one.. Well he won't do his work. I went in one day and he hasn't loaded any of his pallets or cleared his area. He came back several days in a row with almost a full load still in his truck saying he couldn't get it out.

They fired him and contracted me to do his job. I had no issues and did almost double his load. He came in a day later saying he "knew they replaced him with a white boy and he was gonna sue for racism"

They caved and let him work again. A week later he was doing the same shit except then he would openly walk around saying he wasn't gonna do this or that and "try to fire me I'll sue the shit out of this place"

He was fired a week later. Tried to sue them and got laughed at. It's people like that that give a bad name while the two hard working guys are cringing in the corner

His first point was true as well. A woman can be completely disabled, have HIV or have any other of a myriad of issues and some dude will be desperate enough to stick his dick in her. Hell, for some dudes the chick doesn't even need to be alive.

Your father's friend wanted someone who he knew would come in day after day and be a reliable worker. No "it's my time of the month" no "I'm off to have a baby, laters", no "I'm a woman, that's too heavy for me to lift", he just wanted someone who would be there for the job and barring medical/personal issues, would be there as long as they were treated right and cause minimal fuss. You just don't get that with a chick.

men are holding up 90% of society. name any harsh jobs out there and it is mostly worked by men. women complaining these days sound like children complaining to me. it's like when children think they don't need their parents because all the basics are provided for like food, shelter and safety. those things are a GIVEN. so they don't count.

[–]JihadDerp 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Harsh? How about useful. I dated this girl. She wanted wood floors put in her house. She hired her male roommate to do it. After he finished, all she did was bitch and moan about what a shitty job he did. I actually thought he did a decent job. I asked her, "Well, why didn't you do it yourself?" She goes, "I don't know how." No shit bitch. But you can write a real mean essay on post-modern feminism.

fem·i·nism

ˈfeməˌnizəm/

noun

The advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.

So do the women that the main comment expresses fit into the feminist mold? Obviously not because they dont want true political, social, and economic equality to men. So are they feminists? Obviously not.

You see? all it took was a trip to google to look up the definition of feminism. It's not that hard to be informed.

[–]CynixCS 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

If we can bend the definitions of 'rape', 'racism', 'consent', 'due process', 'shaming' and similar words to the point where they can be applied to basically anything related to men or their interacion with society in general, then I'm sorry but we'll have to change the definition of 'feminism' too as they're the cause as well as one of the driving forces behind these changes. Apologies for pointing that out but the movement that calls itself feminism has gone from an equal rights movement to professional victimhood, man-hating, gender-segregation and similar mental acrobatics. But hey, let's just change all the definitions of words we can use in a favourable way while trying to keep the 60s spirit brand stigma of what we call ourselves. Sorry darling, that pig won't fly.

No, as long as those whacko cunts carry out their "operations" under the flag of feminism, I'll accordingly address that behaviour as part of feminism.

Oh wait, that's misogyny and racism amirite?

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

We shouldn't change the definition of anything period. Rape is still rape, i don't recall the OFFICIAL definition changing. Racism is still racism, consent is still consent, etc... the only thing that is changing is the way that misinformed people view these words because all they see are examples on the news or social media. The government might strategically bend the definitions to get their way with people and the law...

The reason definitions exist is to give a word a solid meaning so that things can be named for what they are. A feminist is an advocate of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. These women arent feminist, because they don't match up with the definition of a feminist and that's that.

Just because the government or corrupted people in power warp the definitions of these words to have control over people does not mean that they have changed the definition, much less does it make them right/correct. You choose to listen to them or know the true definition for yourself. That's why education is important, and thats why we fight against this type of behavior.

I hope I make sense. I'm not really good at explaining but I'm trying to get my point across. I still don't understand what you meant about "we" or us bending the definitions of 'rape', 'racism', 'consent', 'due process', 'shaming' and similar words. If you spot people like this all you have to do is show them the real definition and prove them wrong, similar to how i did. You cant just run around bending the definitions of words, because that is spreading misinformation and being completely ignorant. This is similar to what most people do with Feminism. And it's a shame that ACTUAL feminists have a stigma now, when they are trying to bring true equality to women AND MEN, just because Radical Feminists get all the media attention and now everyone thinks thay that is what you call a feminist. It's so annoying for me because I want true equality for men and women, but if I say I'm a feminist I'm burdened with the stigma brought on to me by RADICAL FEMINISTS who don't give a shit about true equality.

[–]CynixCS 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Sorry that's not how language works. Language, and therefore usage and definition of words, is a continuous process and very much alive. It doesn't matter all that much what some dictionary says about a word when the majority of the people speaking that language understand something different associated with that word.

I personally think those ever-expanding definitions are bogus. Unfortunately, as I just explained, language doesn't work like that. "Technically" is irrelevant in everyday use. Practically, those people associate thenselves with feminism, carry its symbols, speak in its name and so on... Those people are the 21st century version of feminism.

[–]jargoon 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah from what I understand there are a good number of feminist groups who support women in Selective Service

[–]JihadDerp 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

"Those aren't muslims, those are muslim EXTREMISTS." Well, where do they get their extreme ideas from? "From the Koran." Oh, so they're muslim. "No, they're EXTREME." So they do what the Koran says? "Yes." So they're muslim.

What exactly does feminism espouse? Equality? Then why the FUCK isn't it called egalitarianism?

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Feminists are those who want men and women to be truly equal. Radical Feminists are the ones who get all the media attention and are considered "Feminist" because they're the only glimpse of feminist that most ignorant people see; these feminists are the type of women that you guys post on this subreddit. It shouldn't be that hard to understand if you've taken a sociology class, or if you didnt get all your information from the internet instead of actually learning the definition of feminism.

[–]JihadDerp 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The "textbook definition" of feminism or anything else doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is what it manifests itself as. I don't consider myself a psychopathic killer, but according to my body count, I've killed lots of people. But hey, according to that textbook, I have good intentions. I didn't actually mean to hurt anyone. I was just doing what the voices inside my head told me.

[–]ShitLordStu 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

[–]ShitLordStu 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It's a subset, or an adjective. Like musician and jazz musician. They are both musicians. Don't erase a minority. Radical feminists are a small but vocal part of the feminist movement.

A homophone would be different meanings gay and gay for instance.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not really, if you didnt get all your information from social media, and reddit you would probably understand what feminism is. Just because Radical Feminists get most of the media attention (because theyre fucking crazy, and media loves crazy) doesnt mean that they're feminists. I can see why most people would just assume that they're feminist, because for the most part social media is their only exposure to them so all they see are radical feminists. If you read the definition for feminism it would say something along the lines of "the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men." So are these women feminists? NO,because obviously they dont want true equality so they CAN'T be feminists. Open your fucking mind, read a dictionary, and stop trying to be such a smart ass when you dont even know what you're talking about.

[–]ShitLordStu 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They are crazy, and destroying what femanism traditionally means. I don't like it one bit either.

They (rad femanists) want equality by destroying what it means to be traditionally male and turning them into some sort of shell of masculinity. I'm not trying to really argue except that they are a part of the feminist movement. You and I don't get to decide who is in your club and who is not.

Everyone gets a voice, and my voice is to combat intolerance with good humor and being a smart ass who doesn't read dictionaries. You get a voice too and get to call me basically an idiot on here.

I'm going to go outside now and play with my two white male sons.

I'm also of the opinion that women who enter the armed forces should have to qualify to exactly the same degree men do. Same amount of push ups. Same mile runs. Same diet and same treatment. That's equality.

[–]I_RARELY_RAPE_PEOPLE 38 points39 points40 points 10 years ago (101 children) | Copy Link

Well aren't men factually stronger than women anatomically in several ways, thus military requirements and whatnot might push themk a bit harder to 'be their best' since women can't actually manage the same goals?

[–]JamesTBagg 198 points199 points200 points 10 years ago* (32 children) | Copy Link

Just because they can't meet the demands doesn't change the demands of the job.

[–][deleted] 44 points45 points46 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

That's very true, and coming from someone in the army, that opinion is held very strongly by many here. Let's not discriminate against women branching infantry. If they do decide to go infantry, then they have to meet the same standards as men or lives will be lost. Also I feel people are confusing military with infantry. There are so many branches other than infantry that do not require hard physical strength. Any gender would do just fine and excel with the talents they were born with.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It is not a standard based on the male gender, it is a standard based on the needs of war.

[–]Strazdas1 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well, yes and no. Different countries have different quality soldier readyness. For example on average US infantry is inferior to Candian infantry, but that does not mean they do badly in a war. These standards are created to push maximum effect out of people in the army so you could do the most war with least loss. So given that before it was put squarely on men those standards are based on gender.

[–]ManDurphies 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]opticscythe 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So I'm a guy and want to join the military and want a desk job. Should I tell my CO I'm not going to need to do pushup today because I won't use them in the long run? Or should desk jockey get their own boot camp?

[+][deleted] -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, obviously PT is a part of regimenting. However, to hold a women to meeting the same physical requirements as a man for a job that it doesn't require is a ludicrous proposition, your turning otherwise qualified candidates for no reason.

I get the push for that requirement in combat roles, but when it has next to zero effect of the job than the PT requirement should fall in line with the common physiological differences between men and women.

Trying saying this.. Allow them to be in active duty combat if they can physically meet the requirements but don't expect them all to be able to do it due to biological limitations. Women are statistically less likely to meet the requirements, but it's not like all men are built for it. Or believe what you want.

[–]bikemaul 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Around 80% of the jobs in the US military are non-combat, though I'm not sure how that would change after an active draft. I think women should have the responsibility of protecting this country. Filling quotas in the ranks instead of promoting the best will get soldiers killed and put our national safety at risk. Overall combat effectiveness is paramount. Women should be there if for some reason we need tens of millions enlisted in 2028.

But are the military's standards designed to prove your ability to do a job, or just used as a baseline to show your overall fitness compared to the average for your demographic.

If it's the former, why do the standards drop as you get older?

[–]Sindibadass 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Because you become more valued for your experience instead of your physique, and start to move more towards admin/ managing / team leading instead of actual grunt work.

[–]krazykitties 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well ideally the gender is not considered, only pure physical ability. Gender can affect this, but is not an end all be all determining physical ability. It wouldn't make sense to have a subset of soldiers, male, female or mixed, that were "below standard" regardless of gender unless they were somehow strictly noncombat roles.

Can they suffer enlarged prostates?

[–]LegitStrela 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Jesus fucking Christ, nothing combines agony and humiliation quite like an Enlarged Prostate. Female-sexual-repression my ass, talk to me when it's socially acceptable for a man to masturbate in a public restroom (for medical purposes.)

That's one thing that women will never understand, and, trust me, they should be thankful. I have a naturally high sex drive, but don't have sex. So, an Enlarged Prostate is an unfortunately common affliction.

During finals last December, I started to get antsy in my seat, my ass felt liked I'd slide across sandpaper, so I walked to the bathroom. It went from sand-paper to fire, and progressively got worse and worse- until I was screaming into my bundle up jacket, and punching the stall door out of frustration, counting every second until the 'bee-sting-in-your-ass/bullet-in-your-gut' pain went away. I was holding back tears and counting the seconds, in an ice cold bathroom for THREE HOURS. And that's ONCE, I'm genuinely terrified of where I'll be when it'll happen next.

Enlarged Prostate is the Ebola of young men. It's agonizing, prolonged, and needs to be hidden. Besides, the only real solution is going to the ICU, so a nurse can stick finger up your ass and push.

[–]higs87[S] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Obviously highly undesirable but can't you stick own finger up ass?

[–]LegitStrela 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

Technically yes, but the angle is hard for me to hit. I need to get a professional prostate massage, which is always uncomfortable. Especially because there's always a cute girl behind the counter who ends up doing doing the job while gentle caressing you like an infant. It definitely eases the patient, but it just makes you think- *How many guys has this innocent little 18 year old girl fingered?"

Not all roles in the military involve combat. People with lower fitness levels are usually assigned to support/rear echelon roles. Don't see why this can't apply to women. And there isn't any "be the best" stuff in the army, just do the job given to you without fucking up.

[–]SamsquamtchHunter 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You dont need to do 85 pushups in a row to be able to fix my travel pay or fix my computer for me.

I'm totally ok with women having different standards for most jobs in the military since most jobs in the military aren't combat. If a job requires a certain level of physical strength, then you better have it, regardless of sex

[–]Buffyfanatic1 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with that! I'm a woman in the military and I work on servers and networks. Men state that women should be able to meet the men's standard pt test which is fair and I agree with. What I don't agree with is when men state that if a woman can't drag their ass in war, they shouldn't join. Like stfu. When would I, working on networks, be put into a situation where I'm in an infantry type senecio dragging your ass? And all the men I work with in my field can't even do that and are really scrawny. So you're saying that because I'm a woman I should be able to do that regardless of my job? That's the argument I get into a lot. If I had your job, I would have to meet your jobs qualifications. But since I'm not in your job I don't have to so stfu

Women in the military don't do shit

[–]AvatarWaang 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes. But, think about it this way: would you want to have to rely on someone who is not held to the same standard as you? Imagine if you're a scientist, and there's someone with a serious mental disorder on your team. He's drooling on himself. He combines chemicals based on what colors he likes. It's not his fault, nothing he can do about it, but that's just not the right job for him. Now everyone else on the team has to cover for him because he can't do his job. I'm not saying women are mentally challenged or that they can't be in the military, but hiring someone who plain doesn't meet the proper standards because you think they're doing their best anyway is dumb.

[–]Sierra11755 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]chadbrochillout 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I feel like it's more relative when it comes to military pt. They're mostly doing bw exercises, they're not being asked to bench 225 for reps. They should be able to do the same amount of work.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So, we're talking about the military, so life and death situations. Don't risk people's lives for political correctness

[–]WiredChris -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

True, less women would make the cut but the overall quality would be superior. But it's important to people that push stats that women are represented "proportionally". They would rather see an Army made of up of lots of women over one where women only make a few percent of total bad-asses.

[–]LvS 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

That's tricky though because the current rules have been laid out for men.

Usually when deciding about the minimum or maximum for some value, you look at the average and variance and then you pick a number that includes enough people. For example, it wouldn't make sense to require that Air Force pilots be as small and light as Peter Dinklage, even if that would allow for better aircraft design. There's just way too few people fitting that requirement.

And that of course means that you can choose any requirement so that the group of people that you don't want in your group cannot meet the requirement. If you want to get rid of women, insist on push ups or lifting. If you wanna get rid of men, insist on low daily calorie intake or weight. And of course, height is always a good option to get rid of a gender.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

you look at the average and variance and then you pick a number that includes enough people WHO CAN FULFILL THE FUCKING REQUIREMENTS

I don't give a flying fuck what genitals you carry around with you, but if you're so weak, slow or fat that you're endangering the rest of the squad then fuck off behind a desk. This means that the man who was so short and weak that he could neither reach nor operate the charging handle of a G3 rightly kept behind a desk and that the woman who could happily lock up in a scrum can grab a rifle and go out into the field.

There should be a term for that. Equalness or something snappy like that.

[–]LvS -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Or maybe you insist that weapons built for the military have charging handles that can easily be operated by everybody.

But nah, that wouldn't make it possible to exclude women.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]pwnography 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What about the things that matter in the peripheral sense? When I went through basic training all the men were shaved bald. All the women got to keep their hair (although shorter). So if women are able to have 'long' hair, what is the point of shaving the mens' heads? Shouldn't women get shaved too so we all look the same and have uniformity, etc?

[–]LvS -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Or maybe nobody should be required to shave?

This is exactly what I mean with "the rules are made for men". It matters a lot more for women if they need to shave their head than it does for men. So while it is a neat psychological exercise for men, you go quite a bit further if you force women to do the same thing.

If you wanted to have it the other way, force everyone to shave the whole body below the chin and insist on perfect manicure and pedicure including a standardized red nail polish.
Should get you the same effect, just that this time men will be weirded out a lot more than women.

It's about uniformity though, about everyone looking exactly the same. Men can't all grow hair on their heads and women can't grow beards, so it makes sense to shave the hair and remove the personal identity during training.

[–]LvS 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a kind of bullshit and superficial distinction though.

Because if it is about everyone looking the same, shouldn't we also insist on a specific skin color? And insist on everyone wearing glasses?

I suspect there's a reason it's only done with head hair, and that is that it's not too bad for men to do and conformance is easy to check. There's no other reason for it really, which is why nobody gives a shit later on.

Same amount of push ups. Same mile runs. Same diet and same treatment. That's equality.

There are literally millions of jobs in the US military. And, just as all other nations armed forces, not all require you to be in some kind of super fit condition. Why should it be a problem for a drone pilot to be in a wheelchair?

And the test does not test your ability, they test your will. For a female to run as fast or a little slower then a male is more impressive and proves her will and ability to make herself fit.

Only the jobs which has physically demanding work at its core should have equal tests. I do not know about the US, but in Norway this is how it is done. Only a few specialised infantry jobs has equal physical requirements. And they are harder than the standard requirements, even men struggle.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

A draft is required in the United States due to a fully volunteer military. If a huge war breaks out and not enough people are in, they have to make people join who are of age and don't have significant need to stay in the US. I don't see any reason to be against it. We don't force people to be military unless desperately needed.

Also, by drafting it doesn't necessarily mean they see combat. There are VERY few who are physically able to do the infantry training.

[–]Haheyjose 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Which is very unlikely to happem, considering the type of warfare that is practiced today, we are moving away from manned combat and more toward drone / aerial combat.

I've said for years that selective service and the draft, despite there being broad consensus that it should go, would never be repealed until women were finally forced to register.

I had hoped that feminists would prove me wrong by fighting for something other than their gender and affirming the claim that "it is about equality, not about women" but, here we are. Word are wind.

Registration and selective service will end, but not before women are required. At which point I'm sure feminists will take credit. But here I will be wondering where they were before women were negatively impacted?

Oh they had a formal position but, meh, who cares about actually fighting it right? We had to address (non existent) rape epidemics and the (long resolved) gender pay gap!

I presume you're talking about the second top-level post in that thread, which cites a now-defunct page on NOW's website. Apart from that, the thread doesn't provide a historical overview of feminist opinion on the draft, so it doesn't lend any credibility to your claim.

Besides, your claim that "feminists have long protested involuntary conscription [of men] before it was even a possibility that women would be" is just not true.

[–]polysyllabist2 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminism has accomplished a lot of change, but they haven't accomplished a damn thing to address male inequalities. And look, here's another "issue" we can add to that list that feminism won't actually accomplish UNTIL it directly impacts women.

I just want them to openly admit that feminsim is a women's movement and not an equality movement, because that's what they are. They can say whatever they want, but actions are what define you.

[–]HilbertGoneWild 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

There is no singular 'feminism'

Then you have no right to make the repeated claim that "'Feminists' are against the drafting of [men]" as you have numerous times on this thread. Either feminism is some wash of ideologies with conflicting positions, or its a singular movement. You can't have it both ways.

You're absolutely right. There is no singular 'feminism' but the article you link even says

The Order of the White Feather raises interesting questions about women’s response to the Great War. For pacifist feminists, ranging from Sylvia Pankhurst to Virginia Woolf, as well as the many rank and file members of the Women’s International League of Peace and Freedom, the obvious feminist position on war was to be against it.

White feather girls are a (significant) yet historical anomaly. And, mostly a reactionary response to carefully crafted state propaganda.

I'm acutely aware the article is feminist apologia for the white feather campaign. My point was that your claim that feminists "fought against the draft" is not true and is debunked by the writings of people from your own camp.

Besides, given feminism's traditional bent toward the left and its ties to Marxism, I wouldn't be surprised if the source for feminist opposition toward the draft had its origins in the idea that conscription was unpaid labor and enslavement of the population to achieve the ends of the state or the wealthy elite, and not because men died in war.

My point is so many men on this site actively spend a ton of emotional energy directed at "feminists" when, the vast majority these organizations & movements are not anti-men. If they are not against you, they are for you.

lol by that logic, the Ku Klux Klan is a movement for the rights of Chinese immigrants in America, since they've rarely spoken out against them as a demographic in their fight for the rights of white Americans.

Feminism is a movement predicated on the distrust of, if not downright contempt for, the male race. Feminists promote the fictitious narratives of the patriarchy, rape culture, male privilege, the wage gap, etc. which place the blame for women's suffering on the male collective, and they will lie to promote these narratives which don't even stand up to basic scrutiny (eta: they will also lie about how their movement allegedly supports men). They routinely shame men for failing to throw their support toward the movement (yeah I don't like AVFM either but this article is on point).

You don't have feminism, at the very least, without the presumption that society favors men at the expense of all women. Why even bother calling yourself fem-inist if you personally don't believe this?

[–]polysyllabist2 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sure, they have an official position, and sure they "tried", but not 1% as hard as they collectively pushed for other things. We have he for she campaigns and rape epidemic shit splattered all ove everywhere, but where was the awareness campaign for the plight of men?

Where are feminists when addressing male inequalities? Not to be found aside from a bullet point on some webpage. Which wouldn't be bad really except they claim to fight for equality in general and not just women's issues.

They claim to 'fight' for equal responsibility as well as equal rights. But they fight for one a lot less hard than the other.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

that's not going to happen. i have never seen women more fervent for any cause other than radical feminist bullshit. draw a picture of a woman showing her ass? the whole movement burns with rage.

American here. We're not okay with it so to speak, but our politicians don't listen to us for shit, our military is overstaffed, and we haven't had a global scale conflict that truly needed it in approaching eighty years. Sorry I'm late to the party. Since you're anti selective service, what's the alternative solution? What do you propose we do then when a war that does require more bodies then the military can provide? And please do not dodge the question with something like "not get into those wars in the first place"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ask the Russians, French, English, and Germans - they seem to argue hell yes and did it multiple times. And America used the draft to force the country to stay together, which resulted in the emancipation of the slaves. And I honestly believe without the draft the Union could have won. So I'll let you decide if purging the manpower to save a country is worth it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There will be propaganda played and it will make some people want to join

You must understand by the time the draft is initiated those people are dead. For instance during the First World War, it took England two years of fighting before it was forced to conscript people because the patriotic calls for service were no longer being answered.

Before a draft is forced, your young, healthy, able bodied, patriotic countrymen have already volunteered. And likely perished. Okay next are the rejected ones who would make an adequate service member but they're not as high caliber. They could be just a bit out of shape, bit older then you'd like but they'll do.

By the time you draft, you're getting the last people you want fighting for you but they'll have to do. In terms of recruitment, these guys flat out suck. These guys may have multiple medical waivers, really old, stupid, may have a criminal record that just got waived, or if they're young and healthy - unmotivated or cowardly. You got your work cut out for you if you're going to turn these guys into a military. And your NCO/LPO's are not going to have the patience to deal with them. The only acceptable answer will be "Yes Sergeant" or "Aye Aye Petty Officer".

[–]ScotchRobbins -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The circumstance described pretty much only has selective service as a solution, I will concede to that. The hope is that we (forgive me for generalizing for all Americans) live in an era where any threat is either small enough to where our (very well armed) voluntary military could handle it or large enough to where both parties are held in something of a stalemate of economic dependence on other nations and perhaps even the threat of mutually assured destruction via nuclear weaponry, keeping parties from warring in the first place. This hope isn't airtight, but it's worked so far.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And that's why selective service exists. Even the military doesn't like the idea of a draft. It costs way too much to train people for a conflict whose length is undetermined. The military has become so technologically advanced that we basically send people to a trade school to do their basic job. And even then they are still not proficient in their job and are basically useless. They need further training and experience to do the job right which can take a year or more. So by the time we get the first draftees we're one year into the conflict after they're needed. It's a shitty situation for all involved but at this point we're in self preservation mode

[–]ScotchRobbins 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

A lot of countries have a type of draft. Switzerland for example has forced conscription once you turn 18, so does Sweden and Norway. Nobody is really fussed in the USA because it hasn't been called for a long time and the military is drastically overstaffed. One of the only countries I know of with no draft or anything is my own, the UK. Here's a bit more info https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription

Also, just semantics but technically the USA doesn't have a draft. It's just a list of eligible people that could be called.

[–]Nainting 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sweden doesn't have conscription anymore since a few years back. The countries with conscription is Finland, Norway and Denmark of the Nordic countries. I went through conscription and it was a rather good experience from my personal view.

[–]Wampasully 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Since atleast WW1 all men in the US have had to sign up for the Selective Service as soon as they turn 18. Basically agreeing that in times of war, should the government decide it necessary, they will be forced to join the military or else face criminal charges. They can also face criminal charges for not signing up in the SS in the first place.

Now, it has been made that women who turn 18 after an upcoming date will have to as well.

Que some women losing their shit about how it's not fair.

Also worth noting that every year the draft (when the SS is actually called into use) gets less and less likely to happen ever again, despite already being very unlikely to begin with. A single senator has been proposing it be activated almost every year since 9/11 and its been overwhelming declined each time.

[–]arkindal 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As an anti-feminist woman, the fact that this law is making some men giddy turns my stomach. I understand that men are fed up with feminazis, but we won't be sending many of them since they are a small minority; we'll be sending the average every day woman, we'll be sending women who have always preferred to adhere to gender roles, submit to their husbands, etc. Women who never wanted any part in this madness.

I have always considered myself an MRA, but now I'm having trouble understanding what you guys want. I thought you were angry because women were trying to become "more like men". I thought you were angry because you wanted ladies to be ladies, but now you're celebrating this absolutely idiotic idea.

I personally don't think anyone should be ripped from their lives, from their families, to go fight in a war they don't want to fight. So to say the least... this is a big step in the wrong direction. And I'm saying that as a woman who won't be impacted by this law.

[–]higs87[S] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

We have two issues here: the draft and women's rights. I truly respect you for being clear minded enough to not be a feminazi. I understand and respect that women have been biased against for a long time and I'm extremely keen to fix this. I do not in any way support the draft. The reason I posted this is because as a male I have to deal with prejudice daily. I must be constantly aware as to the situations I find myself in and whether or not I need to protect myself from unfounded accusations etc. A woman can ruin a man's life with three words "he raped me". I was once raped by a woman, I get laughed at and ridiculed when I admit it. This is fucking bullshit. If women want equal rights then they get the whole kit and caboodle. If a woman hits me I'll fucking deck her etc etc. It's attitudes like the one in the Facebook post that fuck up any chance of coming to a successful and fair resolution to the situation. /rant

[–]SurlyTurkey 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Hey, I'm 110% with you on that. On the fact that women have a very unfair advantage when it comes to rape accusations, the family court system, etc. I just cut off half my family because an aunt decided to start accusing my dad of molesting her as a kid. He's been dead for 14 years and shortly after I decided to come back to the family, she started this shit. And because he was mentally ill, people are believing her, flocking around her in support. It makes me sick for him, your story makes me sick for you. I have always been behind men who are getting taken advantage of and having their lives ruined. That's why this whole thing has had me feeling pretty deflated; I felt part of something good until they were like "haha fuck you, can't wait to see you bitches try to survive in combat". Y'know?

A hundred percent agree.

Well this went... awesome. :) You have a great night OP. And thanks for being willing to share something so personal, I hope you're in a good place these days.

I'm trying :) Thank you too. We need to have open sensible discussions about these things. Have a great time of day where you are.

[–]salululations 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I'm not sure why you think MRA's are about enforcing current gender norms. It seems to me the MRA is primarily about ensuring men and women have equal rights, by advocating for areas where men have fewer or weaker rights than women do.

Young men being forced to sign up for selective services to get some of the same basic rights young women get for being born in the USA is an issue of equality, not gender roles.

Let's keep in mind that the draft will likely not happen, and, were it to happen it is likely still going to be mostly men who are drafted. But this disgust you're feeling, this unease, it's also a good outcome. Because you are not alone, it is felt by many many people around the country, and it may be enough to get the mandatory selective services removed as an institution, now that female lives are at risk too.

[–]SurlyTurkey 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I suppose I feel that way because it's just the impression I've always gotten from RedPillers, MRA's, and the like. That women are trying so hard to be equal in ways that we simply are not equal, and it's aggravating.

I didn't previously consider the possibility you outlined in your last paragraph. That women's lives being put on the line could ultimately abolish selective service. That's sad for obvious reasons, society shouldn't have waited until women's lives were at risk to finally decide "hey, maybe we should do away with this whole thing".

But if this does manage to make it to where my husband, brother, nephew, and all the other men out there can rest assured that they have a choice in whether or not they go to war... yeah that would definitely make this worth it. If not, though... well, then we might have a nightmare coming.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

RedPillers arent the same as MRAs. RedPillers actively work to mentally abuse women so they can fuck, MRAs just want equal rights without the feminism asterisk.

[–]SurlyTurkey 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That makes sense. I've essentially ignored the draft when it came to ways I wanted to bring women down off the pedestal. I never thought this would be presented as a solution before eliminating the draft altogether would. I mean I never would've believed this would be how they repair that inequality... it's completely floored me, we don't even need the draft (I thought we didn't, at least).

I've focused more on what needs to be changed in the workplace, family court, and laws regarding rape and domestic violence that regularly hurts men. But knowing that so many men are on board with this bill has me feeling this nonsensical kind of "betrayal" almost... because I've felt like I was on the same side with men until now.

I suppose a lot of the fear I have also comes from the fact that for some reason, the powers that be apparently still find the draft necessary. So necessary in fact, that they're adding women. It makes me worry about what's coming that we may not be aware of.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Because most men don't disagree with the draft. I know i don't. A world where we don't need selective service is a world where we don't need a military. As long as the threat of a major war is on the horizon, we need the selective service. I'm glad this bill exists because it is the only option for equality.

And for that last point, the thing that's coming is a large scale war. Like really big. Think Fallout, where it's an ongoing ground war for a decade followed by total nuclear annihilation.

[–]SurlyTurkey 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I know we'll always need a military, and we'll always have one. Full of men and women who elect to be part of it. And I'm sure that if a war was necessary, we'd have plenty more flocking to serve. While I also understand that nobody actually wants to be there, those who voluntarily join are mentally and physically prepared to take on that responsibility and put their lives on the line. Sending men and women who don't have that capacity, desire, or if they're just straight up too damn mortified... what's the point? And if we're looking nuclear annihilation in the face, then what would we even be fighting to preserve?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Even after nuclear war, there would be some society.

It would take for damn ever, but eventually we'd be back to where we are. People think we'd be in the dark ages, but it's not that hard to get out of the dark ages when you still basically have all the tech we have today.

[–]Trufflesaurus1 points 10 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm not happy because I like the idea of women being drafted and being killed in combat. This would suck and be tragic, which is exactly what it is when the same thing happens to man. Instead I'm happy because this is an unpopular opinion which is now being forced on all women regardless of their opinion on equality. As far as I know this is one of the first times that an unfun/unpopular responsibility has been put on to women and hopefully will be the beginning of either actual equality or the death of this idea that feminist are allowed to just ask for free shit without needing to contribute anything back.

You are stuck in cross fire, and for that bit I'm sorry but its not going change the part where I think this is a fucking fantastic thing, because now, as far as I can tell now women are stuck in the same situation as I am in. So now that we're stuck in this situation what can we do? Get rid of the draft because if we can't find enough people to fight for a war then we don't have any business starting that war.

Notice how Gender had nothing to do with that? That's what equality is like. That's why I'm happy.

[–]SurlyTurkey 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree that it will be completely worth it if it eliminates the draft. I'm sure there are a lot of men and women who are happy the draft exists, but it's always terrified me. Not for myself, but for all the men in my life that I adore and couldn't live with the idea of them getting captured, tortured, killed. My husband wanted to join the military and I begged him not to, because even though I know soldiers come back all the time, I still can't help but look at it like a death sentence, whether it kills you physically or it kills you mentally.

So naturally, you can probably guess that I think the death sentence is even more prominent for women because we're just generally weaker, slower, and likely less mentally equipped to survive in combat. I feel like this was the worst solution they possibly could've come up with. Instead of abolishing the draft, just double the population it'll hang over? Ridiculous.

We're angry because idiots like you perpetuate bullshit.

[–]SurlyTurkey 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I don't know what "we" you're speaking for, because most of the replies I've gotten have made this into a pretty productive conversation without any name calling.

[–]Ozzyo520 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

we'll be sending the average every day woman, we'll be sending women who have always preferred to adhere to gender roles, submit to their husbands, etc.

I'll say this again. You're an idiot. We're angry because of the bullshit you spew. If you're still confused, see above.

The average, self-respecting woman (or person) is tired of this crap. "We" don't want woman submitting to their husband or acting like ladies. "We" just don't want more idiots perpetuating their stupidity.

[–]SurlyTurkey 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Then I suppose you aren't a member of the you guys I was talking to if you think your mission has always been about equality down the board. That isn't the impression I get from the average feminist or MRA. Both have always seemed to acknowledge mental, emotional, and physical differences between genders, but want to force/legislate "equality" in places it doesn't, and can never, make sense.

For example, I've always agreed with MRA's that "equal pay for equal work" is unreasonable, because women typically can't push the same productivity that a man can. But now these same men who are perfectly happy to acknowledge that are saying "Oh but I totally think the average woman can hold up in war!" I've also always agreed that if a woman's going to bear children and take maternal leave to stay with them, her employer shouldn't be at her mercy in terms of pay or guaranteeing her job back. I've railed against abortion, the family court system, and everything else that puts a woman at an advantage over a man, while maintaining a reasonable view of what the genders are capable of, and the rights they're entitled to.

I don't know how to make my stance clearer, and like I've said repeatedly, this will be a huge accomplishment if it eliminates the draft entirely. But feel free to get out whatever you need to get out.

[–]Ozzyo520 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You'd be hard pressed to find MRA people who don't support women in the draft. I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of MRA and feminists. Both generally support equality.

For example, I've always agreed with MRA's that "equal pay for equal work" is unreasonable, because women typically can't push the same productivity that a man can.

They don't think this. You're wrong. A vast majority of people support equal pay and benefits.

I've railed against abortion, the family court system, and everything else that puts a woman at an advantage over a man, while maintaining a reasonable view of what the genders are capable of, and the rights they're entitled to.

Abortion is more complex and controversial from a equality standpoint but I don't think a majority of men who support abortion don't support a woman's rights over her own body.

Family court system - equality is about equality. For everything really. I don't think you'll find most people trying to strip rights and protections. Only to level the playing field.

I don't know how to make my stance clearer, and like I've said repeatedly, this will be a huge accomplishment if it eliminates the draft entirely. But feel free to get out whatever you need to get out.

I don't know how to make it any clearer to you. A huge majority of people don't want women catering or being subservient to their husband. That's just ignorant. If you feel that way then you're ignorant. What the fuck kind of world do you want to live in?

Something tells me you don't have the life experience to see the flaws in your thinking. Or you're the product of that mindset, which works for you. Up until the point it doesn't any more.

Anyone advocating for the mindset you have is terrifying. Women deserve equality. The same way other races or religions do. You're literally against that. Because they're a woman. You're a cancer to the modern world. Military standards do not need to be different based on gender. Woman should be drafted, if needed, and should be able to enter combat roles if they choose. Even SF and Ranger units. The physical fitness standard should not be adjusted for sex.

It's 2016, wake the fuck up.

[–]SurlyTurkey 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I think we mostly disagree that men and women are equal, and you're obviously pretty pissed about that, but whatever. It doesn't matter if it's 2016, we will never be able to legislate equality between people who are fundamentally different, without one side getting the shit end of the stick in some way. Laws will always have to be removed/added/altered to address those differences. Adding women to the draft as opposed to eliminating it was a mistake IMO, but I suppose the only way people will see that is when/if a draft actually happens.

[–]Ozzyo520 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Men and women are equal. You've literally said women can't work as well as men, which is flat out retarded.

YOU might not be as capable the average man but that doesn't mean the average woman isn't as capable the average man.

I actually feel sorry for you.

And yes, we should legislate as much equality as possible. Family courts, pay, etc etc. You'd be hard pressed to find people who legitimately agree with you. Imagine we didn't have the Civil Rights Act (which made it illegal to discriminate based on sex). You cannot come up with an argument opposing these laws that would make any sense.

Seriously, I feel sorry for you

[–]SurlyTurkey 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It isn't an opinion that the average woman is generally weaker and slower than the average man, so your pity is a little misplaced. It seems you're under the impression that I want to take women back in time when I've implied nothing of the sort. I'm just honest enough to acknowledge our differences without taking out any frustrations or setbacks that come with that on the opposite sex.

[–]Tollhouser -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Too bad bitch, welcome to equality.

[+][deleted] -11 points-10 points-9 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Well it does kind of suck for level headed women like my wife. I don't want to worry about her being drafted..

[–]Iorith 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I believe it isn't retroactive and will only apply to women who turn 18 after the law changes.

Don't you think it's a bit insane that you're opposed to it because of your wife, yet every single man has had this over their head for ages? Sure she's your wife, but that doesn't make her a special snowflake who should be shielded from life.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I also think that drafting women into the military would lower our standards for soldiers. I mean, let's face it, the average woman isn't as strong, fast, or tough as the average man. And something tells me that a woman POW will have a much harder time than a male POW. Plus men would rather be in a squad with other men for combat reasons. They won't want to slow down and "babysit" their female counterparts.

[–]Wampasully 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And something tells me that a woman POW will have a much harder time than a male POW

Being a POW will suck for anyone, let's not try making it some sort of competition, here.

[–]Iorith 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well draft doesn't mean they have to be infantry. They could be support staff, and logistics are extremely important.

[–]Reiver_Neriah 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There are a vast amount of non-combative military positions.

[–]Ctlz -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Being forced into signing for the draft is not a "right". It's an obligation forced by the law.

[–]knotty_pretzel_thief 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Women now have the right to the same obligation as men.

[–]salululations 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Equal rights, equal culpability and responsibility under the law.

So you agree those are different things.

I'm not saying some people wouldn't like to have the rights alone and no responsibility at all. Just saying it's incorrect to call the mandatory draft a "right".

I fail to comprehend how an adult person can perceive the potentially damaging thing they are being forced to do as a right. maybe we have different mindsets or something.

[–]salululations 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm not, and I don't think the image is. I believe the person in the image is saying they want equal rights, but not at this cost.

[–]Ctlz 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If that is the case, then I agree.

The phrasing could still be a bit cleaner than "not this much equal rights".

In my opinion it looks like the words "this much" refer to a right, not an implied responsibility that comes with the right, as you suggest it to be.
