I think that happens because deciding what you want with someone you don’t know much is delusional, you really never know what you want until things start happening between you two.

Yes. But at the same time, it's good to know what you want. If you only want sex, it's good to make sure your intentions match with someone who's the same.
If you don't know what you want and you run into someone who only wants sex and then you start to have feelings, that's your fault.
Imo, I know I may be alone, but not knowing what you want is what screws things up the most. I believe in being intentional because you may get less but you always get what you want and there's little to no drama

Logic has no place in the world of emotion
[–]learnbyrepetition 27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This may be just my opinion but I don’t think you can always be 100% sure about that. Like for example I may be looking for a relationship but if I meet someone that I like enough to have sex but not enough to have a relationship, I’ll definitely have sex with them if it comes to that. Likewise if I’m just looking for sex and find someone that I really like, like the case you mentioned.
So I don’t think it’s “not knowing what you want”, it’s more that you can’t really know what you want until you get to know a specific person.

Most people are unable to separate sex and emotions no matter how hard they try.
[–]my_coding_account 22 points23 points24 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Sometimes men sleep with a woman and then they feel much more emotionally safe to talk about their emotions and things, where before they didn't. So sex might change their mind.

I’m a dude and I gotta agree with you on this. Casual sex is fun for sure, but more often than not, my sexual partners have complained about guys not making them cum or being lazy in bed.
The best orgasms I’ve ever had were in a relationship with someone I cared about. Plus I’m not trying to go barrier free with just some random woman and risk my future sexual health.

[–]Redwolfdc 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There’s a lot of evidence that humans, neither men or women, are really intended to be monogamous the way romance movies and most of our culture tries to idealize. If you look at the few animals that are considered sexually monogamous, you will notice it’s not something they struggle with it’s their base state in nature. A lot more women would be open to casual sex if it wasn’t for a lot of shaming of it (that comes from both sexes). Even as a guy, by experience I would say the sex from a ONS is usually not that great. However I’m not monogamous and would still need variety just prefer more FWB and ongoing situations.
[–]zapadz 23 points24 points25 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Potentially they are worried about being put in a “provider” category, basically the idea that women will sleep with “lovers” for fun and expect nothing in return, but will get a “provider” guy who they get to invest in her before doing anything. So perhaps they fear if they lead with romance and wanting a relationship, they are actually sabotaging things and they’d be treated more like a boring provider who has to pay for everything then gets a passionless relationship while her “lovers” got passion and sex easily with no expectations.
Or, at first they actually only wanted sex, but after having sex they developed a bond through release of oxytocin but are afraid if they try and get romantic now she will feel they are too clingy and ditch them.
[–]InstructionAbject763 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I get the first one, but ultimately, with normal women, it's sabotaging everything, because if you say one thing and do another, I can't trust you. So saying just sex then encroaching on emotional boundaries is too confusing and sends crazy mixed signals that make more secure women run for the hills.
And the second, I get too, but seasoned players should either understand them about themselves or try not to play. It's like if I know I'm allergic to apple, I'm not gonna eat them even if they taste amazing
[–]TheBlindBard16 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You’ve been provided explanations for it so it shouldn’t be confusing for you anymore. Further the need to eat an apple is not even slightly the same as the human need for sex and affection.

I'm just saying, we all have fears and anxieties and that's just dating. Purposefully not being direct or open only hinders things. Doing things out of fear is almost never going to get the desired results. I'm not arguing against the given reason. I was agreeing with what was said, but lamenting and voicing my opinion on the action mentioned

It’s a flaw which means he’s not “purposely” doing anything. It’s a comfort zone thing and you don’t get to live life telling people they need to “just” stop having an emotional setback.

Movies lied to you, men aren’t as heartless as we’re made to believe. Very few men are able to become true players, have sex with a girl and toss her aside etc etc. Especially the men of this generation. Most men are having a extremely tough time having casual sex with MULTIPLE partners. Women think that since they themselves get lots of attention from men and are able to have sex with them if they wanted, men are the same way but we are not. Most guys would love to have multiple relationships with women if given the chance but they can’t hence they have to settle. Relationships are perfect because no now don’t get me wrong he does have feelings for you but constant sex is another factor of a relationship. Guys catch feelings with sex just like girls do most of us don’t have a game plan before sex and end up sticking with it. Lots of fwbs end up in relationships. Start looking at men as actual fucking people and maybe you’ll answer your own questions. Women do the same shit be logical something women never seem to do.

Men say they want sex until they realize that you're just ok with it. They expect women to want a relationship and are surprised when she is ok with just boning. It takes real maturity to know what you want and to say what you mean.

[–]creativedave73 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It's because they don't know what they want in a relationship. I'm almost 49 and I'm just starting to figure relationship stuff out for myself.
This year I've had a paradigm shift in my thinking, where I've stopped thinking marriage is the ultimate goal and now see the potential for having different types of sexual/romantic relationships with women, all equally good and important.
The important thing is to be upfront with her about what's happening, so we're on the same page. I'm not about hurting or confusing women.
[–]snooocrash 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
How did you reach this paradigm shift? I’m recently separated and my intuition is to go back to the comfort of a relationship but I know I probably shouldn’t .. been sleeping around a bit but it also feels a bit empty 🤷♂️ kinda unsure what I want now, not only from relationships but out of life ..
[–]creativedave73 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Good question. This year, I've been doing a lot of self reflection and realizing a lot of things about myself. One of the things I realized is how my religious upbringing kind of messed me up. It wasn't as bad as a lot of people have experienced, but I still got an understanding that there was a right way and a wrong way to live one's life. In addition, I was concerned about what others thought of me. Most of the people I knew were religious, especially relatives, and I wanted their approval.
There's a lot of personal history to unpack, that I won't go into here. What I've discovered is that once I ditched religion and seeking the approval of religious people, my fears and insecurities went away. I began to see how much of my life had been governed by religious ideas and the approval of religious people.
Once I realized this, I felt a weight had been lifted from me and I was free to be the man I always wanted to be, but was too afraid to be.
Instead of focusing on finding the most compatible woman to share my life with, I see all women as different kinds of potential relationships. Most won't be sexual at all, but many will. Some will last one night, others longer, including years. All equally good and important.

[–]Theoretical-Zero2 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Everybody you know and see regularly is a relationship doc. From your coworkers, to your family, and especially the person/people you’re getting naked with. So… what you’re ACTUALLY afraid of is intimacy. Problem there is that sex comes attached to feelings of intimacy for most people.
I’ve been dating a long time, man. If you’re good at sex, it’s going to create feelings. It just is. If you’re not equipped to deal with those, maybe you should try your local kink/swingers community instead of mainstream girls and women who likely want romance, depth, and friendship in addition to the sexual release. Doesn’t sound like you have a lot to offer emotionally, so you’re going to have to find a partner or partners who don’t require much.
[–]luroot -4 points-3 points-2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Right, a healthy woman is always going to want a relationship.
Like, I just checked out Feeld based on a Reddit mention elsewhere, which apparently is for casual sex. Well for starters, the pool of women is tiny. Secondly, the prototypical woman there has a Redditor build with purple hair. And many of them just seem to emit broken vibes. As if they are embracing this lifestyle because ultimately, it's the best they can get? One even gave a shoutout to Satan (a fictional character IMO, but it's more the thought that counts there, lol).
So...back to mainstream dating it is! As sucky as it can be...it could still be a lott worse! 😄

But getting pleasure should come with concise intentions. Ie. If a person only wants sex is should, for the most part, stay that way. Adding romance to it confuses the other person. Cuz they said one thing and did another. Their words dis not match their actions.
If a person said only a relationship then went and did them dirty by using them for sex, wouldn't we call that guy an asshole or jerk, so why is it different if it's sex to romance/emotional stuff? If lying about only wanting a relationship is bad then isn't lying about only wanting sex bad? If I'm not prepared for emotional things, why do my boundaries not matter if they're emotional versus physical
[–]InstructionAbject763 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
But by acting romantic without intent to follow through, that's leading a person on. If you have romantic needs you get a girlfriend. Emotional needs? A therapist. I'm not saying it all has to be no emotions but acting like you have romantic interest in a person you don't, is leading them on and I bet a lot of men would HATE if a woman did that to him.
I feel like men are allowed to lead women on in this "game" but God forbid it if a woman did the same thing
[–]Complex-Peak 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Women lead men way more, lol have you not heard of the friendzone, or just fishing for attention.
[–]InstructionAbject763 -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well, there are women who lead. But a lot of times the friend zone is a place where men who pretended to be nice and friendly get put because women know that if they're ok with being friends they truly know they're a good guy and they continue being friends with him with no expectations of sex or a relationship. The guy who gets pissy for being a friend and gets mad at the girl was only being a friend and or nice to get in her pants. Aka a douche/"the nice guy" 🙄
And yes. Women phish for attention, but men do too. With getting women to sleep with him, since a lot of men view getting women means they have status, wealth, or are good at sex, it makes them feel better. So many men chase and or pursue women and get them to like him so he collects a following of women who make him feel wanted, desired etc and to show other men he must have status and wealth since so many women like him.
Aka a lot of men thrive on the attention of women but do way more harm than simple online thirst traps.
Not saying women don't do this. Because there are definitely narcissistic women too

You treat men like you treat a dildo - use and put away . Men have feelings too- if you don’t realize that don’t have sex with them if you aren’t ready for the consequences. It is better for everyone if you spent your energy on procuring a magic wand vibrator instead.
[–]kiroks 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think you misinterpreted... Everything
I don't think you got what I was saying. We had well established boundaries not to go further than casual sex. So when things got too emotionally deep it made me feel uneasy. I had said to them that I would not be pursuing a relationship or anything romantic and they still talked about future dates, romantic esque quips, and emotional discussions about a variety of subjects.
I felt like a breech in my boundaries for my emotions was made and felt that it was unfair for them to pursue something emotional when we had confirmed with each other that wouldn't happen.
[–]psychedelicbatman88 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]montanalombardy 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Men like romance and emotions. But they are unaware of it or ashamed of it for various reasons.
Men aren't raised wit much emotional awareness, most of us aren't aware of what we really want and like
Culturally it is considered unmasculine to seek deep emotional connections and be vulnerable
There is this expectation that romantic relationships are supposed to be long term while purely sexual relationships can be short term. Men don't want to be tied down to a long term relationship quickly
Your average man grew up on porn and his brian is on "i want fuck" mode. But once he gets sex, he realizes he actually really likes the intimacy and starts tentqtively seeking a romantic relationship with that woman (if he likes her).
Or a more emotionally aware man might realize that he wants emotional intimacy. But doesn't want to get tied down with the first woman who will have him. Or maybe came across some women who gets turned off from getting too attached too soon (there are women with attachment issues AND also women who propagate toxic masculinity by shaming men who become emotionally invested). So he pretends to be a casual dater lookong for only sex.
[–]Baawsen 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What's the point of unintentional dating? Like I'd you want a relationship, why go through s*x to get it when both parties agreed to only sex and how it's super rude to push through emotional boundaries just to test the romance waters??
I've had relationshiops like this and it's because they enjoy the chase. When a guy can't have you, and you actually mean it by actually being disinterested in a romantic relationship they see it as a challenge and it makes them want you more.
It's happened to me once. Luckily, when things ended, it only took like a month to get over him. I really wasn't interested in anything romantic, and I'm still not. He's still a really good friend.
[–]itsamatterofattitude 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm going to offer a different point of view I haven't quite seen addressed yet on this thread...
When a man approaches a woman and says "I just want a sexual relationship", in his mind, he believes he'll be able to create this type of relationship with multiple women and have a variety of options to play with.
If he's said this to 10 women, maybe 2 of them agreed to it.
Of those two, you're the one who didn't ghost him after the first time sleeping together.
Now he sees that his options are limited, but since you stuck around, he would rather have one woman he can have sex with than go back to none.
So he tries to establish a relationship with you.
Additionally, it could also be a case where he started off just interested in sex and later came to realize that you are a great person and perhaps have a lot to offer in a relationship, and those sexual feelings turned romantic and intimate.
Some here suggest it's manipulation, but (and depending on age), that's very unlikely. Most men operate in the reverse, agreeing to a relationship just to get sex, and not using sex as a bridge to a relationship.
It's also entirely possible that you just blew his mind and made him fall for you. The men who start off a dynamic saying they just want sex typically don't have much sexual experience. If you came into the bedroom and gave him a pornstar level performance, he may just think it's the best he's ever had or as good as it can be, and now feels like he needs to hold onto you.
[–]Complex-Peak 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
Men are romantic by nature, (women inherently are not) they cant help expressing romance.
[+][deleted] 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I've been in relationships and have not wanted one for personal reasons. I have a lot in my life and a lot on my plate. Too much stuff to handle especially if I had to deal with a relationship.
Keeping things less emotional is better for me as long as the other person agrees, I've had no problems in the past staying distant enough with a person but still being able to have fun and enjoying casual sex.
[–]Complex-Peak -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Casual sex has nothing to do with romance, men fall in love with women for who they are, women fall in love with men for what they can do.
[–]InstructionAbject763 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
So women aren't emotional. Only men are emotional. So what? Women are the more logical ones?
Or... is this a stereotype that's harmful to all parties involved?
[–]privacylmao 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Being romantic doesn't mean it's emotional really.. being romanced will make you fall into the emotional trap. Being the romantic one just makes you strategic and it's mostly used to either get in a relationship with a woman or simply put; in her panties (imo)
[–]InstructionAbject763 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
And at the same time, using romance as a strategy is kinda... well not the nicest thing to do. Being honest with it When the man actually feels those things is kosher.
But to use it as a tool is pretty ruthless
I mean he already had sex with me when he opened the can of worms to talk about life and emotions and crap like that.
I just didn't like it because I had established a sex only relationship with him and then he's trying to talk about childhood trauma and deep crap

It sounds like you're mentally compartmentalizing "sex" and "romance," which is a common fallacy. This fallacy makes people feel objectified. The kind of "emotional" talk you're describing doesn't sound normal and probably not much a result of the sex itself. But for an unstable person, it can help them cope with objectification - by themselves and you - that is a direct result of this compartmentalization. Just my two cents.
The rest of your post frankly spiraled into being unintelligible.
[–]Complex-Peak 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]cobraCL2 points 3 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The world would be a better place if people knew what they wanted, and were overt about it.
This behaviour is basically "Have your cake and eat it too" - The man in question in this scenario estanlishes the leeway of being able to shut down any conversation about feelings (if it comes from you), but wants to game the boundary he established for 2 possible reasons. A) He changed his mind and actually wants something deeper after accidentally forming a bond with you, or B) He understands the efficacy of pushing and pulling, and may feel validated by the deepening level of interest from his Fwb. By keeping his Fwb curious about or even longing for 'more', he is typically able to extend the duration of his casual sexual relationship. His Fwb may then become more loyal and start offering relationship benefits like emotional support, favours, close companionship - all while exclusivity, commitment or actual feelings are ambiguous at best.
Sometimes people fall in love by accident, other times folks are just playing the game.
Only way to avoid "situationships" is to be very clear about what you want and to ditch an arrangement if there is any violation of integrity on your part or his.
It’s called PTSD but still holding onto a sliver of hope

People should not have relationships only because of sex that’s like bribery. Romantic attachment happens sometimes, but not all the time even if it’s practical. Because men tend to bond and grow towards love through intimacy. So they are serious when they go into it saying just sex. But, good sex to men starts to create a bond, bond starts to create affection, affection starts to create love.

Men would rather not waste their romantic efforts on a woman if it's not going to lead to sex. Especially in this age of "foodie calls."
If you start with the sex, then that is no longer a concern. You've proven your interest in a authentic way, the man has experienced those post-coital bonding hormones, and he decides he wants to deepen the relationship.

My experience is that a lot of girls make a run as soon as they see a hint of emotional investment from me. They are all too happy to be regularly pounded but get scared of someone getting attached to them. And from that experience I grew a pretty detached facade.
Does it get results? for sure it does.
Yeah, sure. But I get scared of emotions too. Everyone in this age is like that. But to me it's the idea of like warning me he gets loads of women emotionally attached and it bothers him to then engaging with emotions and stuff when i had felt like I was being emotionally toyed with.
My ex was a narcissist (diagnosed) and the idea of a man talking about my favorite activies then having me talk about my traumas and his to a point was just way too much too soon right after sex the 1st time.
It put me in a point of emotional vulnerability that triggered me because I'm used to people building up trust and friendship and using my vulnerability against me.
So when someone comes in with an extra amount of making me feel emotionally vulnerable it doesn't feel good or safe

The reality is that either individuals have to show some vulnerability and take some risk. Either of them could get burnt in the process, which is why people develop this phobia of showing vulnerability.
It's tough. You'd hope that at some point you'd click with someone enough for you to be able to let go and be vulnerable and vice versa. It's a rare thing to happen well particularly in this age where sex availability is so widespread.

Reading most of your response here OP u/InstructionAbject763 i think that you encounter just the classical case of needy and clingy boys that with manipulative ways are trying to get into a relationship using the sex as gate..
Run away from that kind of people

Because when men say they want a romantic relationship they seem desperate and women are going to friend-zone them or feel pressured and ghost them. It never worked for me.

Because we don’t know if we’ll like you until after sex.

It's called game
[–]bundabuster69 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It is due to two main reasons, we men don't always know what we want and secondly we have learned from past experiences to never wear our heart on our sleeves.

Doesn’t seem remotely confusing to me, he most likely meant what he said re just sex then caught feelings during / afterwards. Both sexes do that. The only thing he could do better is communicate exactly what he wants and you should do the same
