This technique may well work, but I think it's predicated on an incorrect premise: that someone needs to be checking you out for you to go chat them up. Approach who you are interested in, not who's interested in you.

It's called mirroring and works with anything. You can look at your phone, if the girl also checks her phone she is mirroring you.

I'm not sure how often that'll work, especially if the other party is jacked up on caffeine or something.

A similar and I think more universal one is the "look left trick" (or right). Same concept, but instead of yawning, you look left and check if they follow in that, even if just a split second glance you caught them!

in my experience, I never seem to have enough time to yawn or do some other cue. I look around, I see her and we make eye contact for a second or two; Hardly enough time to yawn or make any physical motion

It's a trick that involves rapport. You could also use the "stroke my hair" or "what's that over there " trick . It works the same way

There's lots of cues like this that work in groups or one on ones. One for a group of guys is to lock your hands, and put them on top of your head. If the other guys do it too, they trust/like having you around. Another one is offering someone a piece of gum, and keep holding it there till they say yes. Another one is putting your arm on their shoulder or arm, if they reciprocate, they like you.

Don't use this, yawning is contagious, you could do it in front of your family or grandma and they'll yawn to. It's not a sign of attraction in the slightest.
