This is going to sound a bit nuts, but I've found success with this same issue by restricting my sleep. Sleep only 6 hours and get up with an alarm at a consistent time. If you need more sleep, you'll feel tired earlier than normal bedtime and be able to sleep then. In this way your sleep becomes self regulating, I'll end up averaging 7 1/2 hours this way.
