Can men be trusted to take male contraceptive pill?

I fully support the male pill, but as a female I wouldn't trust it as my only source of birth control.

Ultimately, there is a greater health risk involved in accidental pregnancy for the female party - therefore I'd feel more comfortable knowing I'm also taking the pill.

I recently got in a huge argument with a Feminist female friend over this. Her stance was that the male birth control pill should be illegal and never come to market. Better yet, she offered no reason for this beyond her emotional reaction.

Wait a minute. It says that because women don't trust men to take the pill every day, despite men responding by and large that they felt they could, that this means that pharm companies will have to provide fool-proof options like injections that last years.

Let's break this down, shall we?

Either 1) the researchers (or article's authors) are giving more weight to women's assessment of men's ability to take a pill than on men's assessment of their own ability to take a pill, or 2) they would steer men toward long term options (which means, well, if it doesn't agree with your system a week in, how do you deal with that?) simply to make women feel better.

In the first case, they are prioritizing women's opinion of men's over men's opinion of themselves, and in the second, they're prioritizing women's feelings over men's practical health concerns.

WTF.

Hey, I don't even trust MYSELF to stay on the pill. Which is why I have the implant. But the option should be there for men, too. It'll give them greater control of their bodies, and if contraception does go wrong it'd be a nice backup. Peace of mind and all that.

I seriously don't see the insult here except for the title. The article said both genders approved of the pill, but women didn't feel they could trust men to take it every day. Having been in a relationship where my partner was on the pill, she forgot occasionally. I didn't trust that she'd always remember, so I took extra precautions. I don't see how this is any different or sexist in any way.

The title though, I really think they need a different title. It highlights the wrong part of that article. Sure enough though, it got people's attention as intended.

I don't know if this has been posted yet, but think about this:

I don't know how many men out there really want to have sex with a condom. I don't. I don't like it. It makes sex feel bland.

This pill eliminates risk for pregnancy (albeit not 100%) for the chance for the man to have sex without a condom.

Considering the current outcome for a man and a woman having a child in the Western world, I believe men would actually me more trustworthy than women when taking the pill.

Most often, in the cases of most births the father is at a severe disadvantage regarding his parental rights. It's quite possible he spends the next 18 years of his life working 2 jobs. This being considered, it makes sense to think that less men want to have kids than women based solely on the economic disadvantage it brings them. Further, this means they are more likely to use the pill because unplanned births pose them more threat than they do the woman.

I find it strange that women have to be asked how they feel about a male pill. If this was the other way around and men said they don't trust women to take it they would say it's their body and decisions. Men truly don't have the same rights medically. By the way I about to be a father, my girlfriend "forgot" to take hers and I have no choice but to suck it up. I know if I had a pill I would take it properly and it shouldn't matter if women like it or not. My pill doesn't override her pill. I do feel like women want to be the ones to decide. Many women use these mistakes as a meal ticket.

The "birth control pill" is, actually, more than just for birth control. It was originally intended to regulate women's hormones. For men, it would be just for the control of pregnancy.

Men have more to lose IMO if they don't take the pill. I doubt many would forget to take it seeing as they can't abort (financial abortion) like women can. Women have plenty after the fact options where as men have absolutely 0.

If you can't trust your partner to take the pill don't have sex, or use a secondary contraception.
