Having a child is considered risky and permanent because it is, in fact, both risky and permanent. A pet is not the same thing as a child.

Pets aren’t superior to children. Some people choose not to have children and some people cannot have children - is there something wrong with those people if they chose to have pets in those circumstances?

The permanence of having a child is not bad, but it is permanent and it does require a lot more responsibility than having a pet - you are always a parent but once you no longer have a pet you are no longer a pet owner.

I also don’t know anyone who is bragging about being a single mother, the majority of the people I’ve seen in the single motherhood space are exhausted and struggling, and they’re not bragging about anything other than how exhausted and struggling they are.

I think you are referring to the people that have an unnatural and extreme view of caring for pets vs children. And honestly there are some people who should definitely not have children OR pets out there so I think it’s a good thing that we recognize the permanence and responsibility of having children in society but it’s not a bad thing.

I love my pets, but they are pets. I don't treat them like children because that's also doing a disservice to the animal. A well rounded, stable animal is treated with respect for what it actually is - and most aren't capable of having human emotions and human-empathy the same way we are. By treating them like the animal they are, you can have a healthy relationship, with good boundaries for both humans, and the particular animal.

If you like your dog, or cat, you don't treat it like a human being, you treat it like a dog or a cat. lol

I was a dog trainer for 3 years as my career before I retired, but I also worked with farm animals, cats, and parrots, including a macaw.

I don't understand why people put human emotions on animals, it generally does a big disservice to their pets long-term.

I'm also autistic though and I don't like bad behavior in pets that a lot of people seem to encourage because it's "cute" or they think anxious/clingy behavior is appealing because "oh my dog likes me." when they really are just making their dog neurotic.

Small dogs especially get away with bad behavior that I don't understand why people allow jsut because it's small. O.o

I NEVER see a pet owner that has no kids moaning about parents. Ever. Yet parents of children constantly moan about woman who don’t want children, and instead choose pets. I don’t see animals as superior to children. I absolutely adore my nephew. However, I do not have the mental stability or the funds to have a child. That’s my decision. It doesn’t mean I hate kids. I also love my cat. He looks after me, and he gives me company. He is like a family member to me. I don’t understand why this is offensive to you. You’re free to love who you want, and I’m free to value and love who I want to. My cat is also a lot less work than a child. I feed him, clean his little tray, and play with him and cuddle, and that’s it. I’ve never seen anyone say it’s bad to have children. In fact quite the opposite. Woman are constantly scrutinised for choosing not to have children. As for your point about kids being risky and permanent. They are permanent. And it is risky. Children cost a lot of money. Relationships break down. And single motherhood is absolutely something to brag about, but it’s also extremely hard. So it’s definitely a risk. Not everyone is cut out to be parent. As I said, for me, kids would impact to much on my mental health, and it wouldn’t be fair on me, or a child for me to have them. Because having kids is hard work. That’s just a fact. It doesn’t mean kids aren’t amazing. But, it’s completely okay and normal that not everyone wants to have them. I don’t see why anyone else’s decision has an impact on you. I’m happy for people who want children, and I’m happy for people who are happy to just have dogs or cats.

I don’t think pets are superior to kids at all.

But man, they’re certainly a lot cheaper. I can’t afford a kid right now, so until I can, pets it is!

Also re: risk/permanence: pets have a lot shorter lifespan. You almost always outlive your pets. You hope to never outlive your children. It’s not “bad” that kids are permanent, but once you have a kid, you’re a parent forever, regardless of what happens. No longer owning a pet means you’re no longer a pet owner. Also, one is a human and one’s an animal. They’re completely different stakes.

Honestly, I believe that children are best raised in a stable, loving, two parent household. And a sanitized, risk-free, helicoptered childhood is not the best way to prepare your children for adulthood, which is a parent’s ultimate responsibility.

Hard disagree. You are basically handing those &# #+s+ who get pets irresponsibly a good excuse. Pets are there for 10 - 20 years. They need love and attention and most of all commitment to their care. Shelters are growing full because people discard them. Children are something else entirely. They are becoming fellow humans.

Modern propaganda from the powers that be, creating more wage slaves and consumers, and the destruction of the family unit, especially among a certain people, who are the highest demographic to own pets and spend on pet-related items. The pet industry is a massive money maker (as well as biomass recycling - most part foods on the market are made with refuse from various industries, basically anything "not for human consumption.") People without kids generally both work, and spend money on more frivolous things - vacations, alcohol, video games, what have you. Also, rampant mental illness and fear porn in the news.

1.) Pets and animals can't speak to one another with any sort of universal language outside of gestures, body language, and noises. 2.) Humans will embody certain psychological qualities, train it into their pets, and then give extra special attention and love to that pet for seeming more human and appearing to express similar traits. We've probably all known someone who "rescued" a newborn cat or dog that they then raised to be clingy. 3.) After humans project their psyches onto/into their little animal friends, they feel as if that animal is some sort of child or infant that they can nurture and cultivate. Over time, because of the first point, they begin to develop more empathy for their pet and other animals than they have for even the average human; pets never say things to us that we disagree with, right?

A child is a $250,000+ 20 year commitment. Can you afford that? A pet lives 10 years and you don’t have to send them to college. A dog only gives gives gives you affection. A child COULD give you the biggest heart break of your life and constant drama and problems. You can break up with your pet, you cannot break up with your child. I can't speak to all pets, but a well-trained dog is just far more immediately rewarding, and society is quickly losing its ability to deffer satisfaction. Like, you ever see a homeless person with a dog? The dog doesn't give a fuck, he's happy just to be with his human. Dogs are just always happy basically no matter what. Kids though, throw fits all the time. Often about nothing. Often about things you're right about because you're the adult and just know better. Our lizard brains just can't see that the rewards far outweigh those minor problems.

People have become enamored with consumerism and finding their identities within the things they buy. They have also wandered away from religion which teaches things such as the importance of family and marriage.

People have started naval gazing and they believe they can become their own messiah. Everyone thinks they are special and unique. It's not good enough just to be 'middle of the road' anymore.

People are afraid of the smallest bit of stress or hardship. The idea of children isn't 'fun' for a lot of people. People are incredibly afraid of any tiny possibility of death or of pain or hard work although the modern world has made our lives safer, more convenient and easier than it ever has been. Instead of utilizing all the things we are gifted with today people have become incredibly soft and over sensitive. The idea of giving birth to or raising children is now scary for a lot of people. Something perfectly normal that has never been safer or easier has become a great source of contention for people.

The standards for raising a child in the west these days are kind of ridiculous. You have to be the perfect parent who can afford a nice middle class Joe Bloggs lifestyle and nothing less. You can't ever yell at or spank your kids ever and if your kids behave like kids in public you are burdening everyone with them. So much nowadays makes you an awful parent in the eyes of society when no one cared 30 years ago. We forget that kids are resilient and sometimes a little bit of hardship in life builds character and makes us stronger people. Anyone who believes they are a little flawed will be guilted by society into putting off becoming a parent. The idea of parenting and having to do it to modern societal standards overwhelms young adults with stress and intense anxiety.

Pets require less commitment than children. They are there unconditionally and they tend to live much shorter lives. You don't have to be the perfect person to own a pet. Anyone can own a pet. People suddenly pay attention to you and validate you if you have a pet. You can project your own feelings and behaviors onto your pet and imagine that it 'loves you unconditionally' and that you have this deep amazing bond with it. You can convince yourself that said pet is the best possible companion, even an adequate substitute for a family. Most people understand on some level that they are fooling themselves but they need to cope somehow.

Single motherhood is glorified because women genuinely are struggling and that's how they cope. A relationship with a child's father can end at the drop of a hat for any reason and couples are encouraged to break up over the smallest difference. People don't stay married anymore and men are not held to their responsibilities. When a couple has had children and they separate the woman often loses her ability to find a good partner and she will have to take on most of the responsibility for the day to day care of children, despite the promise of gender equality. Society doesn't tell women all these things and they convince themselves that they are 'boss babes' who can reach for the stars. In reality single motherhood or fatherhood for that matter is not easy. Parenting with your ex and having to date people who are not the parent of your child introduces potential problems and difficult emotions. Single parenthood in reality is often extremely lonely for most people, but no one tells women this.

Women have never been so degraded and oversexualized by society at any point in our history. To be a woman today is to be without decency or dignity, public property to every man. Women are conditioned to act like sex objects from the onset of puberty. They have their lips pumped with cement, they don't leave the house without makeup, they have their butts filled with cement. The most recent fashions in regards to clothing are something only a prostitute or a porn actress would have worn 30 years ago. Women are actually not fully aware they are doing this. In their minds they are just following other women and their favorite influencers and celebrities. They then wonder why they feel so insecure about their bodies which are constantly on display like a piece of meat. To be a woman is to essentially be a sex doll in our current culture. Women are not allowed to grow old and the terms matron or grandma, terms that were compliments and terms of respect many years ago, are now insults. Women fear growing old because the only value they have according to our modern society are as masturbatory tools. Without god men have become animals and have become slaves to fornication and pornography. The way they treat women completely reflects this reality.

Young girls in record numbers think they are opting out of this degradation of women by being nonbinary or transgender. Women suddenly hate their bodies and want to mutilate them. Society encourages it.

This is the world we live in now.

I’m glad someone brought this up. I keep seeing people use the phrase “crotch goblin” completely unprovoked when referring to children and I find it dehumanizing and strange. If you don’t want to have kids, who cares? Why be negative towards people who do? Sometimes I’m afraid to bring my 1 year old and 3 year old out in public because it’s hard enough and I just don’t need the anxiety of thinking people are hating on me and my children for simply existing.

1. Pets are not superior to kids. My kids have brought me waaayyy more joy than my pets. With that a pet with a significant other is the first step towards kids and raising something together & the responsibilities that come with it. It's the first step in building your pack/family.

2. A pet is good for someone that doesnt want kids or has a justified trauma & fear of being a parent. Being a parent of a human is raw and scary. Some people are not ready. A pet is a good test experience.

3. Pets for post baby folks is nostalgia of the joy of when your grown kids were babies. It never leaves. Why do you think grandparents love their grandkids more than their own kids?

4. You can mess up with a pet and the damage is limited. There is no therapy bill in 10 years.

5. Low maintenance, especially a cat.

6. A dog is always happy to see me. My family - depends on the day.

7. At some point your kids stop cuddling with you. Your pet doesn't.

Is it? I don't think we're any worse societally for judging tantrums and things than we ever were. Look at the expected behaviours of children in public historically, I think we're more tolerant.

Because pets live 15 years, not 80. Rehoming pets if your circumstances change is common. Feeding them is cheaper, looking after them and educating them takes much less effort.

Because it affects every choice you make for the rest of your life in a way that a pet doesnt. If you want freedom, a pet can be left at home, a young child cannot. Even when they are grown up, you consider your kids when making decisions like where to live. For those who want kids, it isn't enough of a drawback, but noone should go into it thinking that it isnt permanent and that there aren't going to be compromises.

I don't think it is, generally. However, some of the recently single mums I know are vocal about being single mums have come out of abusive relationships where their husbands were cheating or violent. I support them in trying to make a future where they aren't suffering those humiliations.

The average parent in most first world countries is on the way to becoming overweight/obese, eats unhealthy food often and doesn't exercise, fairly likely to get a divorce, does not bother engaging their children about their own interests and incapable of seeing children as separate beings from themselves instead of dolls to force their personalities upon. The average pet owner is the same way, but it is much less destructive for obvious reasons. Just because you can do the most easy thing in the world, in fact so easy that people often do it accidentally, doesn't mean that you should. And I think that most people are not mentally mature enough for children.

I'm a little late to the party BUT I was a member of a pregnancy sub until recently. I posted a question relating to the fact that now that I'm pregnant, I feel differently about my pet and worried about hygiene etc. Basically worried for the sake of my unborn baby. I was heavily downvoted and bullied by women with one in particular mentioning that she volunteers at a cat shelter cleaning up cat poo. It's literally against medical advice (I am NOT a medical professional but this advice is fairly clear across the board). It seems pets and even strays (!) are more important than ones own baby?

Hard pass.

A pet stays the way it is and isn’t a person so they’re not quite as demanding. Their interests will never really conflict with yours. They never argue with you. And most of all they grow out of their infancy a lot quicker than humans.

Having had a puppy, the first month or so was very much like having a baby and a toddler combined. But then it’s just over. Six months later, my baby is still a baby.
