Guys,

I've been married 30 years, we got married at age 20. With our last kid off to college, I want out.

She's controlling, judgmental, wants a life completely different than the one I want, and the thought of casting off this marriage and getting to live my own life for the first time ever is absolutely intoxicating. She's also mean - she grew up in an abusive home, so when she wants to, she brings a gun to a knife fight.

After 2 years of my own therapy, and 6 months with her, I can say that I believe that I deserve - for the first time in my life - to plot my own course, make my own friends, and find out what the world has for me while I'm only 50 and healthy.

So that sounds great in theory.

The problem is that - she's also the mother of my children, and we've had a LOT of great times and memories - we were two stupid kids growing up and finding their way as best they could. I'm also wracked with guilt at the thought of leaving her alone to the dating scene. I'm also struggling with the stigma of being the "guy who left his family".

So, all of that to say, as badly as I want to leave, I'm having trouble having the conversation and putting things in motion.

I'm asking for help here - how do I both make the jump to the life I now believe I've got to lead, while being able to hold to a narrative that will carry me through 6 months of divorce, scorn from my wife (and likely daughters), friends and family?

And how to I actually have the conversation? After breakfast, do I say "Hey, by the way, I don't love you anymore and if I stay here any longer I'm going to kill myself" - how do you have the conversation and how do you frame it?

Thank you in advance.
