You can end this discussion in 5 minutes flat as long as you make sure a couple ground rules are followed.

When people hear the information below, they start trying to disingenuously make the argument about a "wage gap", and keep bouncing between the meanings of each term, but not honestly discussing it. This is because the information below represents significant cognititive dissonance for people who believe there is some patriarchial conspiracy to keep women down. There is a CLEAR difference between a "pay gap" and a "wage gap". Be sure they don't attempt to argue one but MEAN the other.

Women with the same qualifications, performance, and time in service are NOT being paid less for the same job that men are - FULL STOP. Articles and sources that say otherwise, typically do so with subtle and not so subtle lies. The two most common lies about this are calling it a wage gap when they mean pay gap, or comparing apples to oranges but pretending it's all apples. There are two more, less common lies in this discussion, the first exploits the apex fallacy where they compare the top 0.00001% of wealthiest people to the rest of the world. The second is where they do shit like talk about 3rd world conditions as if those are relevant to western, industrialized nations, and then attempt to make the case based on either the apex fallacy or the conditions in the poorest parts of the world to justify Marxist egalitarian (equality of outcome rather than equality of opportunity) measures such as hugely lopsided affirmative action and disenfranchisement of men in the industrialized west. Be wary of such arguments and lies and keep the discussion on track if you can.

Here's the story on the "pay gap" which DOES exist and exists because of the choices women make - FULL STOP.

The pay gap means that over their lifetimes, women in the aggregate tend to earn less than men do and there are two primary reasons for this, both of which boil down to CHOICES women make:

1) Women tend, in the aggregate, to be interested in careers/vocations/jobs that deal with PEOPLE - healthcare, education, child care, etc. Men tend, in the aggregate, to be interested in careers/vocations/jobs that deal with THINGS - construction, STEM, finance, etc. STEM jobs of this sort tend to scale higher in wages than non-STEM fields. Incidentally, in the most "egalitarian" nations - Scandinavia, the data show that when there is LESS pressure/barriers to entry, the polarization between job choices for men and women actually INCREASES. Put another way, when men and women are the MOST FREE TO CHOOSE, women tend to choose "people" jobs and men tend to choose "thing" jobs at even greater rates. There is less homogeneity on the basis of gender in these nations. Female dominated fields become even MORE female dominated, and male dominated fields become even MORE male dominated. The only "job sector" that bucks this trend is government positions, where in Scandinavia, women trend closer to 50/50 representation (something like 46%) in elected government roles than elsewhere in Europe (something like 40%). It should be noted that these data are undeniable, and are in direct opposition to what the social experimenters wanted to see. Of course, they paint it as an issue of discrimination and glass ceilings, but they already removed those barriers with their social experiments in those nations. You could debate whether this is a nature vs. nurture situation if you want, but at the end of the day, right now, the data show this polarization.

2) Women (in the aggregate) tend to work less - fewer years and fewer hours per year, than men do. Some of this is about child care choices that women make. Yes there is a necessity for a woman to have SOME time off for actually birthing babies, and since they are the only ones that can do that, yes, it falls to them. However, women in the aggregate ALSO tend to do things like drop out of the workforce for a year or two or more to raise children. This is their choice. Admittedly it is somewhat expected socially, but that's not men driving it. Ask around to women and see how many of them would want to marry a man who would be a so-called "house husband". You will find that this is not a widely preferred role for a man in traditional marriage. If the women say they would happily marry a guy who would stay home with the kids while she pursued her career, remember - most of the time, what women SAY is one thing, what they actually DO is another. Pay attention to what they DO if you want to know the real story. In short, for women, the CHOICE legitimately exists to get into a marriage where they do not have to work outside the home. This choice does not legitimately exist for men: i.e. the percentage of women who would ACTUALLY accept a "house husband" is so low as to make it more of an exceptional unicorn case than any sort of legitimate option for men. Even successful, high earning women (physicians, attorneys, executives) who earn more than their husbands will mostly not tolerate their husband not working outside the home.

Ultimately, the "pay gap" is about the choices women make. There is no glass ceiling. There are only candidates with requisite qualifications and without, and candidates who choose to pursue one career track and candidates who choose to pursue other career tracks. As for elected officials and the highest offices being held by women - in the US, women make up the majority of the electorate. If they wanted a woman president, they would vote for one.

You are correct that econometrics and economic studies going back many years (including a meta-analysis of the Dept of Labor, which had the inconvenient document removed from their website back in 2009) have shown the wage gap to be a function of the various choices and trade-offs that women make (among them: having babies, which seems like a rather large difference between female and male workers). But acknowledging that honestly would undermine feminism's most successful and useful agitprop/recruiting tool.

It seems that you haven't read what your professor is saying. In what you quote, they don't tell you not to use empirical data.

You are not being told not to use empirical data.

You are being told not to conflate that empirical data with another topic - in this case, a criticism of feminism.

What you have done, by the sounds of it, is like prove that road deaths are too high and Donald Trump is an idiot. Both might be true, or neither, but you don't need to mention something that has no direct relevance and is (according to the professor) debatable and improved in your submission.

You can disprove the wage gap without any reference to anyone who says it exists. If you do start referencing anything else, then you have to prove that also - and you clearly failed to show that your critique of feminism (which I personally find sympathy with) was accurate.

For whatever reason you are taking this course, you will have to accept that you will need to be very dispassionate in disassembling feminist lies. But you can't do that by emotive criticism of feminism, only by carefully disproving every single issue, which you should be able to do.

If you find yourself accepting any aspect of feminism, be aware that you are accepting the indoctrination the course is intended for and re-examine what and why you are accepting it. Always treat everything you are taught as a lie and you will not be going too far from the truth.

If feminism is the assertion that everyone is deserving of rights regardless of gender, then that would mean two people, who are inclined to do two different jobs, should deserve the same pay.

One could argue this is not meritocratic, since some jobs will naturally earn you more than others. Namely, technical jobs, such as in the field of technology, serve higher wages than nursing.

However, on the other side of the coin, society would not function without these lower paying jobs, and raising their wages could be deemed necessary as a way to acknowledge their importance.

At the end of the day, I am inclined to agree more with the second argument, since the world is not meritocratic anyway. The highest paying jobs are the ones where you don't actually work, but you own the means of production, and as a consequence, the profits as well.

Just use modern data. There is still a roughly 5% wage gap between genders for most professions.

However, most researchers attribute this to things like ambition, personal choice, and income vs fulfillment choices.

You can let them have the win for it existing. But you can drill down to why it's not an issue based on the reasons researchers give for the discrepancy.

Or you can shit on the original study how it basically summed all wages and divided by the number of people included and tried to compare them directly. It may be one of the most cited, but shittiest study that I've ever read.

My line of reasoning on this is simple. Free market defines the pay.

If I objectively one has more skills he potentially can bring more value to company.

Same education is not necessarily a reason for same wage. Same years of experience counted in years is not same.

So how do you identify pay gap is the real question.

Many IT jobs are dominated by men. Yes women are present and paid less. But men spent extra months of their free time to learn about new tech as theirs hobby. Fair deal? Yes, no?

How about medical staff. Fresh out of uni, man or lady. Same level of knowledge and same level of time spent with patients. Are they paid significantly differently? I doubt that.

Is female cashier at Costco paid less than male one on the day 1 of their first job?

Pay difference arises when employee recognizes his value and is willing to move on if not paid more. He has also an option to play it safely, not asking for raise because this may be his/her best job.

Is it the right to a fair wage? Where is this right granted? Wages are determined by capitalist market forces, not rights granted by the government. How would the government even manage what a fair wage is?

Is it the right for a woman to work where she chooses to work? Clearly feminism disagrees with the career choices women in aggregate are making. Are women not smart enough to choose their own jobs and benefit packages, and they should be more like men, measuring their value by their wages?

Is it the right for an employer to choose the compensation package for the job offered? Clearly feminism disagrees with how much employers choose to pay traditionally female positions. Are women not smart enough to avoid these low paying jobs and they need to be more like men who choose the high paying jobs?

For any feminist position, you can ask 3 questions. What is the right that they are protecting? Where does that right come from? How does that right infringe on other rights of men and women?

Feminism is an ideology that looks at any benefits men have and demands them for women, and looks at any costs women have and demands them for men. That is how they intend to enforce “equality“. You will not find a single platform of feminism that demands women to bare any costs of men, or that men get any of the benefits of women in the name of equality.

They are not interested in reducing the costs to women, they can’t reduce the costs to women because those costs come from the free choices that women make throughout their lifetime. They want to transfer the costs of women’s choices to men “in the name of equality”.

For example, when more men went to college, this was a benefit that we needed to transfer to women. But now that more women go to college, this is a cost ( more student loan debt ) that we need to transfer to men. We could say less women should go to college to reduce the cost to women, or more men should go to college to increase the cost to men, or even fight the for profit college system we have, but no, feminism chooses the least equal solution possible, men pay for women’s benefits “for equality”.

I’m sorry that your instructor is so anchored to her feminist propaganda that she can’t accept new information. When I was in college I had to take a women’s studies class for my major. Knowing that J wouldn’t be able to sit through an entire semester of propaganda I decided to take the summer class where the entire semester was crammed into one week.

I had to write a paper on DV and in my research found information about DV being largely 50/50 and bisexual women reporting higher rates of DV while in lesbian relationships. I got an “A” but the instructor did write a message stating that she didn’t agree with all of my conclusions but the paper well researched so she had to give me an “A”.

Hmmm, I would write a paper on the sex/gender pay-gap as you see it. Site your references correctly, don't take partial references (i.e. where the part proves your point even if the whole, in context does not), you have an opportunity to show and share a new perspective.

I do believe a gender pay-gap still exists, however, it's cause is different now, originally it WAS a sexist thing, that women couldn't possibly do the same job, to the same standard as a man. Now, as I'm setting out to write a paper on, pay structures are rigid and set, and many large businesses pay you more for your time in the role, men have two extreme behaviours where women have a more consistent set. Men are either hyper ambitious and quickly rise up, or are very content to sit in the same job for 30-40 YEARS (which in the civil service is incredibly common). Women fit in between these extremes, working hard and constantly looking for the next secure opportunity.

So if we have three tiers of Job (A, B & C) and staying on pay rises every year for say 5 years. We have a structure that looks like this roughly:

C5-C4-C3-C2-C1 / B5-B4...B1 / A5-A4...A1

C is the lowest paid tier, 5 is the lowest paid grade.

If I decide to stay on in B tier for 5 years I'll be a B1 the highest paid in that grade. If I come into the business and stay for 5 years and climb the tiers at every opportunity I may only be a A5 after 5 years so I won't be getting paid as much as another A tier employee, in.fact I'm the lowest paid tier A employee, I may be paid similar to a B1 but no-where near a A1, so that would be a wage-gap. Given the habits of men and women in work that, I've observed, which is a super small sample and I'm genuinely looking for a much larger sample set, this would appear on the surface to be a gender wage-gap.

If you want to be contrarian, keep it simple, be even-handed and well-sourced. Make limited claims and back them up. You might still be able to pull off an 80%.

As for her comment, I don't think she is quite saying what you think she is saying. I think she is saying that discussing whether the wage gap is "real" is okay to discuss. However, even if you think the wage gap is not interpreted properly, it doesn't imply that feminism is a giant disinformation campaign. If feminism claimed 90 true things and 10 things that are misleading it wouldn't qualify as a "giant misinformation campaign" in my opinion. You'd need to show it was more like 10 true things and 90 misleading things. And you can't show that with just one issue.

My restructuring would be more like:

If feminism is the assertion that everyone is deserving of rights, regardless of gender then it is unambiguously a good thing.
However, the wage gap as calculated and frequently interpreted is misleading.
A common reading of the wage gap is that it is implies discrimination by employers - paying women less for the same job, simply because they are women
This sort of discrimination would be outrageous. And it implies an easy fix. A company can look at people they have in the same job, and make sure that a man and a woman who are in the same job, with the same hours, same experience and same productivity get paid the same.

That's because most of the wage gap is caused by: men and women doing different jobs, men working more hours, men working more dangerous jobs, men having more years of experience, men having more credentials, etc. (Sources very important here).
So in order to reduce the wage gap, we need a much more holistic approach that addresses all of the above. I don't know what particular suggestions you might have. Some things could be: requiring every job to be 50% women and 50% men. Teachers, nurses, oil riggers, garbagemen, executives all 50-50. Require the number of overtime hours to be the same for both men and women. Require that for every year of maternal leave that men take a year of paternal leave. Teach young girls to not expect men to pay for dates or to buy their wives things. Teach young boys not to give their girlfriends/wives money. That way both men and women would have similar needs to earn money.
Reflect that all these rules might actually mean that more people end up doing jobs that they don't want to do, and that the cure might be worse than the disease.
Suggest a better alternative. Make sure every young boy or girl knows that they can strive for any job that they want. Promote examples of people of both genders succeeding in all jobs. But recognize that everyone is free to make their own choices and that the overall wage gap may never be eliminated. Propose a new statistical methodology to measure true discrimination (ie. difference in men's and women's pay when controlling for job, credentials, hours worked, experience and productivity (where it can be measured)).

What she has said, which is correct, is that you've jumped to a conclusion that is outside the remit of the data you're referencing.

Empirical data can be used as evidence against a wage gap, but by itself isn't enough to say feminism as a whole is a misinformation campaign.

I remember a college course where I had something like that happen. Instead of writing about what the instructor wanted me to I wrote why all the nonsense he said was a complete logical fallacy. It was a really good paper. Dude gave me a C on it. No marks, no criticism, no pointing out any errors that existed on it, no feedback, just a simple C. I then thought to myself, I could escalate and probably win, but this was a extra course that had nothing to do with my major and would just be a distraction from my primary goal of getting a degree and getting the fuck out. At that point I decided I'd just tell that douchebag what he wanted to hear and get easy A's. So I did. Now that I'm quite a bit older and more established in my field and am used to grading papers I'd be much more prepared for such a fight. But again, it didn't make sense to fight it at the time. I got in to get out, and getting caught up on some side battle didn't make sense.
