Marvel have a long history of mocking their majority fanbase. Like I said in my analysis of the Thor movie (which you can find on /r/Masculism), all you need to do is take Thor and Loki and ask yourself which of these characters is the audience surrogate.

The female periphery demographic is real and valid and does deserve attention, but it seems pretty obvious that Marvel are unlikely to develop sympathy for men as a group.

Not that there's anything wrong with trying to boost women in STEM if they are underrepresented.

Men are underrepresented overall at universities though and don't receive the same help. We should ask why no one is doing anything about that.

I'm not against helping women where needed just that we need to help men as well where needed. I actually believe men and women should be treated equally and that's why i'm not a feminist.

This is one of the many reasons why I would never consider myself a "geek." Falling on my own sword in a mad rush to hoist women up on a pedestal is the sort of impression that I've gotten from that community. I'm not into self-flagellation. The comics themselves are often bad enough. Just about every Marvel hero I'm aware of is a celebration of male disposability, an exploration of the evils of manhood, and a statement that women are virtuous and far superior to men.

I wouldn't mind the push to get women involved in careers where they haven't traditionally been found, if there were the same push to get men involved in careers that have been traditionally dominated by women.

My school has all kinds of scholarships and programs and seminars to get women into Computer Science and Engineering majors. There is no such thing however, to pursuade men to take up Nursing or Education.

The basic problem with this is that male participation in higher education seriously lags behind female participation. It is a serious problem and it is getting worse. Reaching out through comics is a gender appropriate way to reach young men.

I truly don't see a problem with this. Women don't really participate in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathmatics fields by and large. This is something they're doing to correct that. I think it's awesome.

If there was a program that focused on helping boys graduate high school and get a head-start in college, do you think feminists would be upset about that? Of course they would. Do you think they'd be right to do so? Of course not.

This is another example of providing assistance to a single gender in an area in which that gender is disadvantaged. Even though the disadvantage may be due to personal choices made by women whether or not to pursue that field, you can't necessarily make the sweeping statement that, "Women don't want these jobs, so why help them get there." The same could be said about boys dropping out of high-school. Boys who do, most of the time, did it by choice. Maybe they're too lazy, maybe it's too hard, maybe they just want to quit and start working immediately. That shouldn't be the focus.

Men are excluded because there are already so many men in the field. While that does create more competition, since most jobs need women in the field to avoid sexism accusations, it doesn't do anything for social progress if men are given the scholarships over women.

Like I said, I really don't have a problem with this and I think, if you do, you might be a little sensitive about gender issues. Correcting gender imbalance in a field that's mostly men is no worse than correcting gender imbalance in a field that's mostly women. If an organization was offering scholarships to men for nursing, teaching, child care, we'd be all for it.

It is technically gender discrimination, but I don't think this is an instance which is worth tipping our pitchforks to.

I have no more problem with this than I do promoting boys education in the areas they are failing so badly at.

There is real discrimination against women in STEM, I wouldn't want the women in my life to be subject to it and so small privately funded measures like this shouldn't be seen as threatening to MRAs. It's the lack of equal funding for boys that's the problem. I wish MRAs would get upset about that instead of trying to take funding away from girls.

While I think the basic idea of trying to encourage more girls to go into STEM fields is a good idea, I fear this is going to cause more problems. It is going to breed animosity between men and women in STEM fields.

I had a discussion with a female friend of mine that I knew when we both went through grad school She, a feminist, is actually against such gender specific programs because it makes it seem like women can only succeed in STEM fields if they are given a boost.

I've been involved in enough organizations where people dedicate money for "scholarships" or specific causes, and people can be as selective or as general as they want to with their money, as it's their money to give.

I do wonder how many "boys-only" scholarships exist, though.

This seems like a pretty sound move for me. Most of their demographic are boys, that's true, but that's because they don't appeal to women. This is supposed to change that. They'll appeal to them by offering a scholarship and they'll appeal to them with new artists that will hopefully spark a new era in Marvel.

There was a local scholarship for mothers that a friend of mine fought. He ended up getting that scholarship too. If someone qualifies for this but is a male, apply and fight it if you're denied.

Well, honestly I feel kind of divided on this. I agree that it sucks because little scholarships are devoted to men only. But at the same time, there are very little women in any STEM programs. Its like offering a scholarship for male nurses, which if it is not being done should be done. Its according to what is needed in the field. I don't see much deliberate inequality. That's what the scholarship chose to support. Who are we to say where a company puts their money?
